If you are not what is on your card now, then you are not by necessity that thing, I should think.

[He laughs breathlessly, a weak, pathetic sound, as if it were a sob masquerading as a laugh. Were his thoughts so painfully obvious? At least the man isn't prying.

'I should hope', Silas' tempted to answer on an impulse. But to do so would be to admit an unsettling sliver of doubt he shouldn't be feeling at all. He shoves aside his feelings.]

Naught but cruel trickery, these cards. While many among us are tormented by uncertainty and loss, they surely look down ...and they laugh.

[He'll drive himself mad if he allows these thoughts to consume him. And perhaps he has some sense of this for he breaks off with another shake of his head, fainter this time. He wearily passes his fingers through his fringe, pressing his palm to his forehead for a moment.]
