Mission #13 - Historic Route Six-to-Four
Who: Jack Holden, Silver, Leonhardt, Jack Sparrow, Serah Farron, Shikamaru, Haru Glory, Hyuuga Neji, Albert Silverberg, Helios Sprensonne, Saori, and Kotetsu.
What: Mission #13: Historic Route Six-to-Four
When: February 27th - March 2nd
Where: Along Route Six-to-Four
Summary: A routine transport mission goes awry when the cultists attack and a game of dreams begins.
Rating: Whatever 300 was rated, tbh
Departure
As noted on the mission briefer, this will take over the course of four days. The first two hours of the mission will be loading up the caravan and taking their assigned positions once it hits the road. This segment will be entirely hand waved. If you want to use this thread to establish some brief greets and exchange of names among characters, that’s fine, but the Malnosso will keep the workers too busy to do anything more than exchange pleasantries.
Four hours into their road trip, the caravan will suddenly come to a grinding halt as they pass through a shaded forest. Suddenly the lead vehicle will ring out with an explosion as it goes flying off the road and on fire. Fortunately, none of the volunteers were permitted to be on the lead vehicle, but it does spell trouble from the group. With the sound a war horn, the caravan is suddenly descended on by winged assailants. The security forces equipped to the caravan rush to mount a defense, but the cultists are cleverly able to use the forest to their advantage to launch their attacks. From four points around the caravan, Shifters take up position and block the powers and technology of all present.
And then the General steps onto the battlefield. The battle commences as the MSF draw their blades. The volunteers and other workers enter the fray as well in what looks like a hopeless battle. But before any conclusion can be had for either side, there’s a flash of bright light and everything goes dark.
Please use the plotting post for any questions!

And he was here to ruin that. He wanders toward the figures, frowning, nervous. He might as well be telling someone their loved one had died, because in a way... it's close e-goddamn-nough.
"... Ah--hey. Pardon."
... He's too tired to even try making it any greater than that.
Better off leaving that behind, getting it over with.

Yet breeding held true, and he did not immediately tell Kotetsu to leave. Instead, calmly, he moved to stand between the newcomer and his mother. "Who are you?" What are you doing here? lurked under the question, not immediately spoken but still no less a demand for information.
no subject
Kotetsu is at least prepared for the worst, if anything. He speaks politely, cautiously:
"My name is Kotetsu. We went on a mission together, remember? We're both back in Luceti."
no subject
His mother rose, behind him, resting a hand on his shoulder. "Whoever you are," she said quietly, her tone sweetly, traditionally feminine, soft and gentle, "you are disturbing my son and I."

... but he doesn't. There's something... something that perhaps pings in him, something that tells him maybe I should listen. Being a ninja is all about looking past the surface...
He frowns. "How I got here..." Of course he should know how he got here; he pays attention to his surroundings and what's going on. It's not like he just would have wandered off in a dream...
And yet he can't say it. Can't actually remember. He knows he got here, he knows he came here, and his mother was here, but he does not recall the precise sequence of events.
"Explain yourself." The words are firm, even harsh -- tinged with uncertainty, perhaps with a little fear.

He gestures, channels his urgency in the way his arms and hands motion.

At that moment, his mother wraps an arm around him, protective -- possessive. "Don't listen to this madman," she murmurs to her son, fingers caressing his shoulder lightly. "He is lying to us."
Neji looks up at her, then looks at Kotetsu again. "Prove it. Give me some evidence."
no subject
Damn, he didn't think this far ahead.
"I... don't know. I just came back from waking up someone else, but..." He's gotta think of something. Anything. "I mean, what reason would I have to come in and tell you somethin' like that??"
no subject
... If it even is lunacy. Something is nudging at Neji's thoughts, some kind of familiarity...
"What do you expect me to do with your ramblings?" he asks, folding his arms. "What action ought I to be taking, in your estimation?" The words are dry and slightly mocking, but they are not rhetorical.

Behind him, his mother shifted uncomfortably, not at all happy with Neji's train of thought. "Don't indulge his foolishness," she snapped. "This is a madman."
no subject
But see--that's the scary part.
"You gotta attack the dream shifter in your dream. It doesn't really kill 'em, but it lets you get outta' their power. They--turn into people you care about, so you don't suspect 'em."
He doesn't glance at his mother, but...
no subject
"This madman wants you to hurt me," she murmurs to her son, leaning in close to him, as though to take shelter against Kotetsu. "Don't listen to him, Neji. You can't. This is all nonsense, it's madness..."
Neji stays silent, his pale gaze fixed on Kotetsu, as though trying to read something unwritten in his expression.
"To attack my own mother," he says slowly, darkly. "You'd demand such a thing of me?"
no subject
"She's not your mother. I dunno where your mom is back in your world... but she's not here."
He looks at the woman finally; looking the shifter in the eye--Kotetsu doesn't have to be genius to figure this out. Kaede did something similar, in his own dream.
"Didn't say you were the dream shifter. Coulda' been anyone in this fantasy world... But it sounds like you both got the idea of how it works." He scowls. "Just let him go. Why're you doin' this to us??"
no subject
A stranger on the one hand, and his mother on the other. The immediate conclusion should be obvious. But things aren't matching up here, and the more Kotetsu awakens him to think about the situation, the more obvious it becomes.
He shows no sign as the conclusion clicks in his brain, and he takes a slow, deep breath.
It was pleasant while it lasted.
Ninja-quick, he whirls to strike at the woman behind him.
"My mother is dead."

Kotetsu's relief is bittersweetened by the fact that all of this is practically torture: having to live your dream fantasy, being with people you love, only to learn they'll never really be there. Not like it used to be. He steps back and lets Neji deal with this himself, impressed as always by the demonstration of speed ninjas seem to have.
Sorry, Neji. Sorry it had to be him telling you this, and sorry this had to happen.
He holds his breath, and waits for the dam to break, for the reality the boy's built to start to fall apart right in front of him, once he strikes the dream shifter down.

Neji stands where he is, his hand falling back to his side, fingers working briefly against themselves. The Gentle Fist is anything but, really -- toward its victims, and also toward its users. A single strike that makes the heart stop, that bursts it when applied correctly --he's known that strike for years, mastered it years ago. But using it once again against someone of his own blood, his own family...
No. That was nothing but an illusion. I did not strike down anyone who was ever close to me.
He turns to look at Kotetsu. "What now?"
no subject
Eventually. They'll get out of here.
Kotetsu isn't about to crash and burn in a place like this; not after everything that's happened.
no subject
He's a ninja. He knows a few things about that.
