Summary: After months of painstaking work, Tony and Jane are finally ready to test their machine. Things don't exactly go according to plan.

So here's how things are going to go down: This log will be split into three sub-threads. There will be preshow thread for everyone to tag into before things start to go down. Then, there will be a main thread for Tony, Jane, Loki and Billy for the actual portal testing and immediate results. Finally, there will be a postgame thread for anyone to tag into with their reactions.

A bit about the set-up in Tony’s workshop for you spatially-minded people: the portal itself will be near-center in the room, with all the other tables and equipment (including his armor) moved back against the walls. This will leave plenty of spectator space and clearance room for potential backfiring. But that surely won’t be a problem, because this is going to work, right? Of course right. Ahaha.

Ororo came late. She'd been spending the past few days recovering from her rather unfortunate run-in with a true weather goddess a few days back and was not quite up to speed yet. But she wanted to see this push through as well, curious and cautiously hopeful about the results.

She noticed Logan off to one side, as usual, and headed in his direction after a look around the set up.

"Logan. How are things coming along?"

[snikting]

He gave Ororo a nod. Really, the distraction was nice.

"Lots of talking, murmuring, and general nothing. I ain't been this bored since the time Chuck made us attend Kitty's spelling bee."

[calmbeforethe]

"And Kitty was very thankful for the support, if you remember." She gave the place another look around. None of it really made sense to her - this was far beyond her knowledge after all, and she wished Hank or Charles were around to give input of their own. Tony and Jane seemed like geniuses in their own right, but the fact of the matter was that she didn't know them as well as she would like.

"They seem rather confident that this will all work out."

[snikting]

"So was Forge. I don't recall that working out so well."

[calmbeforethe]

Ah, of course. Ororo frowned. "We dealt with it then. I'm sure we can deal with it if something similar happened now." It was good to be optimistic, but it was wiser to be cautious, after all.

[snikting]

"Can't say I'd be upset if we had that kind of cleanup again." An invasion of other-dimensional monsters sounded relaxing.

[calmbeforethe]

Despite the palpable tension in the room, Ororo can't help but chuckle softly. "Only you would look forward to fighting such things, Logan."

She looked around the room thoughtfully. "But I hope we don't see any action. There doesn't seem to be much legroom in here. It wouldn't be a good idea to let my lightning loose with this much machinery present."

[snikting]

He smirked. "Knock down a few walls, get rid of the roof, and this place'd be downright cozy for a brawl."

[calmbeforethe]

"Easier said than done. Unless I call down a hurricane or two, of course." She hid an amused smile under the guise of peering at some of the tech a little more closely. "But that might put an end to your cozy little brawl sooner rather than later."

[snikting]

"You deprive me of a good fight and I'll be real pissed."

[calmbeforethe]

"Now, now. It's not my fault if you have slower reaction time to these things, Logan." She grinned a little, shrugging. "And you can't argue that my way would be much cleaner. And efficient."

[snikting]

"I hate cleaner." If he liked things clean, he'd take more baths.

[calmbeforethe]

"And most prefer it." Including her. "But perhaps I could leave one or two for you to deal with, to appease you."

[snikting]

"You're too kind."

[calmbeforethe]

"Thank you. I do try."

[snikting]

"You know what we got waiting for us, right? If this works?"

Apocalypse. Worse than that for her. She didn't even know.

[calmbeforethe]

Well, that sobered her up right quick. "Of course." Or she thought she did, at least. "Truth be told, our return is long overdue. Even if we don't know what's in store for us, that does not change the fact that we are needed, back on Earth."

[snikting]

"If it works..." He stared at the portal as he thought back to those images from the video feed. "If it works, we got some things to sort out before we go crossing through it."

[calmbeforethe]

"Do we?" She wasn't sure what he was referring to. They'd spoken not a few days ago about what happened last Valentine's - perhaps it was something else?

[snikting]

"Just some business concerning home." Ideally, they'd not have to talk about it at all.

[calmbeforethe]

But now that he'd brought it up, Ororo was concerned. Logan wasn't one to bring up home very randomly. She took a look around; they weren't alone, but most people were busy with something or the other. Not the most private or ideal place to have a conversation about home, but it would do.

She let her voice drop to a quiet murmur. "Is something the matter?"

[snikting]

"We can take later. The show's bound to start soon."

[calmbeforethe]

"... You aren't one to bring something up and then not follow through on it." She gave him a curious look. "But you're right. I will hold you to that promise, then."

[snikting]

He grumbled a silent agreement. He didn't much want to tell her at all, especially if this thing didn't work. But it was a bit too late now. He wouldn't be getting off the hook for it.

So he didn't say anything and instead focused his attention on the machine just as things were starting up.
