Again---too many things flooded in. For a pirate who didn't enjoy revealing things about himself, he seemed suddenly in a hurry to, but he didn't have the words. It wasn't a skill that he possessed. Finally, he began to tell her the only way he knew how.
"Once, Annie," he began, "once there was a man who was trying very hard to be a good man. And--one day he found he couldn't, because even though he was trying--and he read the books and tried not to pillage too much--his mad voices were getting much more worse. So--so he had to leave for a while."
