[She had given it her all and there is nothing more she could have done. It's a rattling throw back to when Sabriel had been scratching up her hands trying to carve that memorial for her father. She had failed him; she had done her best and it wasn't enough. Bitter tears start to gather in her eyes and she hastily brushes them away, sagging lower against the wall as the rest of his words start to sink in.
