At the time, John had said they had acted in haste due to a fear of the unknown. That he had been in negotiations with them, but they were impatient, and acted before he could work on a "cure". It had been a more widespread issue - beyond this barrier - at the time. We weren't given more information beyond that we usually were protected from things like this happening because of the barrier itself.
