The first step is the one you believe in

Who: Pepper Potts, Tony Stark, and everyone who has gathered there today.
What: A wedding and reception
When: Sept 14, All Day
Where: Cherry Blossom Hill / The Battle Dome
Summary: Pepper and Tony are getting married ~~finally~~ ~~officially~~ finally.
Rating: PG/PG-13 max? There's at least one kid here.
The decorations on the hill are simple ones; they've chosen this spot because it's naturally beautiful without the need for embellishments. Chairs have been set up for the expected guests, with a clear path laid out for the wedding party. And of course up front there is a place for those people to stand, in sight of everyone gathered so Tony won't be able to tell Pepper "I told you so" as color commentary won't be necessary.

After the ceremony everyone will be invited to go to the Battle Dome for the reception. There Tony's programmed an expansive hall with tables and seating enough for everyone. There's also a dance floor, which everyone is encouraged to take advantage of. The atmosphere is warm and vibrant, clearly intended to help all in attendance have a good time. Dinner will be served, and there's an open bar, with rum by request of the officiant.

Just don't get too rowdy, okay kids?

[The best he'd been able to hope for was cute, and sure, he'd had a couple of girlfriends, and Alice and him had been sort of serious, but that had been less about flirting.

He snorts at that, giving Simon an exasperated look.]

No you didn't. You've spent too much time around me.

I think that's more pessimistic than realistic, Sammy. What makes you think people wouldn't want to flirt with you?

[It's always sort of baffled him, Sam's insecurities about himself, when Simon couldn't see much reason for it. It's not as if he were bad looking, or boring, or anything like that. Simon's pretty sure that even back at Abel, Sam could have easily found someone to hook up with if he'd put a little effort into it. He'd managed with the old Five, hadn't he? And the new Five... well, there were still a great many bets circulating 'round about that, weren't there? Or there had been, before Luceti. Now it was sort of a moot point.

Simon just laughs at Sam's comment however, grinning with fond amusement.] Was that meant to say I've been a bad influence on you, or that I should know better, having known you as long as I have?

Um, experience?

[Not many people wanted to date a geeky Chinese kid who was never going to amount to anything. And then the apocalypse had happened and Alice had died and... what was the point when they might all die. And he still had to work with whoever rejected him.]

Maybe a bit of both. But you should know better.

Yes, because you've had so much of that. [Simon rolls her eyes again, giving Sam a fond look.] I think you sell yourself short, Sam.

I'll remember that for the future. If I recover from the mortal injury you may have dealt my ego.

I've had enough. I went to university. I'm not totally clueless y'know?

It doesn't matter what you think anyway. You don't want to go out with me.

[He smiles slightly at that, a wry expression.]

Pretty sure that you have more than enough ego to recover.

Apparently you are. What makes you think I wouldn't go out with you?

[Simon arched an eyebrow at that, tossing another piece of information out there to stump Sam and test the waters a bit. See how he would react to that. His expression was curious, nothing in it to give Sam the impression he was making fun.]

Maybe. You never know. It could be dwindling.

[That makes everything come to a grinding halt in his head and he just goes still for a moment, giving Simon a disbelieving look.]

W-well because... because you're you. And I- I'm me and...

[Simon's not sure whether to be amused by the dumbfounded expression on Sam's face or offended by it. Still, his expression remains wry as he gives Sam a crooked grin that's more sarcasm than actual humor.]

And Three's not a high enough number to catch Sam Yao's interest apparently. Knew I shoulda gone for thirteen.

It's got nothing to do with number. Besides, Cameo was already Thirteen when you became a runner so that wouldn't have worked.

Thanks for the reminder. [Simon rolled his eyes and narrowly avoided stepping on Sam's toes. Possibly by accident. Possibly not.]

[He gave him a baffled look, not sure what's brought on this weird behaviour.]

I didn't realise you were so set on being Thirteen. You never said anything.

I'm not. I didn't. Three's fine. Nevermind, Sam, that wasn't the point. Look, nevermind, it was silly. I'm thirsty. Are you thirsty? I want some more of that champagne, I think.

You make absolutely no sense. Can't you just be straight with me.

Are you sure? You said you wanted to dance. But sure, we can get more drinks.

Look at me, Sam. We can't get any straighter than this. [Simon retorts the comeback jokingly, her lips quirking, but the sarcasm still lingers as she motions to herself, to the body she's stuck in for the foreseeable future.] And yeah, I'm sure. I suddenly feel in dire need of alcohol.

[He rolls his eyes at the joke, feeling suddenly uncomfortable. He's always known pretty much where he stands with most of his runners. Obviously not Eight because who knows what she thinks, and Seven is inscrutable as hell, but most of them. And now he doesn't.]

Okay then. It's pretty good champagne.

Any champagne is good these days. [She steps back, arms wrapped around herself and turns away from the dance floor, because yeah, she's had enough dancing for one day and this hadn't gone well for any of it. WHo'd she been kidding? She really should have stayed home and waited this all out. And she felt weird. Simon didn't like it.]

I guess.

[He stands there for a moment and then follows after Simon, looking thoroughly baffled and kind of miserable.]

I'm sorry. I don't... have I pissed you off? I didn't mean to.

What? [The question has her looking back over her shoulder at Sam, taking in his expression and that has her huffing out a small sigh, shaking her head.] No, Sam. You didn't. I just... This is weird. All of it's weird. I'm not even thinking like me. Maybe I shouldn't have come to this thing.

Well yeah, I mean, you're a girl and we're in another universe with wings but... but there aren't zombies and there are hot showers and as much alcohol as you can drink, right?

[She huffs out a laugh at that and waves off his worried look, adopting a crooked smirk that's just as familiar on her, despite the change of appearance.] Yeah, Sam. I know. No need to go stealing my role as the eternal optimist just because I went and got boobs.

Hey, I'm optimistic! Out on missions, I'm all encouraging and stuff.

Yeah. You are. You do good, Sammy. No one's denying that. [The smile she gives him is crooked and fond, something else in her expression that's not normally there. Or just maybe not so typically apparent. But she shrugs that off too and turns back towards the refreshment table.] Come on. Drinks. I need one.

[He smiles back, and there's something there that he's not used to seeing, but he doesn't quite catch it. Probably seeing things.]

Right, yeah! Drinks. Champagne at least. The bar is pretty well stocked.
