Who: Open
What: A festival
When: Um...yesterday? ^^;
Where: Near the tea shop
Summary: Katara has set up a festival of sorts to keep the kids' minds off of their situation.
Rating: G-PG max. C'mon, it's for the kids!
Katara stood back to admire her work. The area in front of the tea shop was laden with warm, summery colors and had a few makeshift stages scattered about. Everything was ready to go as soon as people started arriving.

Matt felt like such a toddler walking around with an escort. He didn't even really like being outside that often, but anything was better than that dark room. Who would decide black would be a great color scheme for everything? It also felt like he was being kept prisoner. Mello had his hand in a gloved grip. Why? Of course he tried to wander off instead of keeping within the other's view.

They were on their way to pick up games (that don't exist in Luceti but Mello didn't tell him that yet) and hopefully stop by the clothing store. He slowed when nearing the tea shop. It wasn't the colors and stages that attracted him but the firebird. Magic? Real magic? He started in that direction without saying anything to the person who held his hand.

Not anticipating the sudden change in direction, Mello veered off course behind Matt, and drew closer to the festival set-up. Until, of course, he realized what was going on. Then he stopped dead in his tracks, and was even so kind as to drop the death-grip he had on Matt's hand. No way in hell was he going anywhere near the tea shop, the place had bad karma (or so Mello had convinced himself after the last few misfortunes that occurred on the grounds), and wasn't going to budge another inch.

"Go have a look around, and get that curiosity out of your system." It was only all too apparent that Matt was intrigued by the presence of the firebird. "I'll wait here." Yeah, this definitely wasn't Mello's scene, he'd resign himself to nonchalantly lingering off to the side.

Matt looked up at Mello curiously but was quick to take off toward Stella and where the firebird was moving through the air. "How do you do that? Is it like an esper or summon?"

Matt isn't interested in the kiddie stuff. If there was a storyteller simply reading from a book on a stage about baby animals or ABCs, he would've steered clear. Anything that looks like what you see in a video game? Sure, he'll look into that. More freedom. Naturally, he'll keep an eye out for an opening to sneak off.

He then was distracted by the person swirling water through the air. "Can I learn how to do that?" Matt took a seat somewhere between where the two ladies were performing their tricks.

"You can learn magic here? Can you help me?" It's hard to resist the chance to learn something that isn't supposed to be possible, unless it's the typical parlor tricks. This looked real though.

"Then what is it that you're doing? It's like the water hopping devices in gardens and theme parks." The ones where children try to catch the water midway and get wet.

Matt looked back toward the blond. Then he leaned forward to continue more quietly.

"Would you be able to cause a small distraction?" A doleful look was directed at her. He was far enough away that he could try to leave without one but hoped she was willing to do something, if only to play along with a child's fanciful games.

"I don't think there's anything like that where I'm from."

He fumbled for a reason. "Ummm... I want to go to the shops and surprise someone." That wasn't a complete lie. They were heading in that direction, and the blond would be surprised if he sprinted off. Then again, maybe he wouldn't be. It was unoriginal, but he didn't have that much time to mull it over.

What would distract him? He hadn't been around Mello long enough, or seen him interact with others, to know what catches his attention.

"Maybe you could... go talk to him?" He shifted his eyes in the blond's direction. Mello allowed him to join the festival without him, so the performances more than likely wouldn't impress him. "Or could you cause a... small accident?" With the second part, his attention went to the floating water.

And Mello had, admittedly, not been paying much attention to the happenings at the festival. He'd kept in close enough range to hear the ongoing conversation between Katara and Matt, but had focused the majority of his attention on the journal in his hands, idly paging through it. So when Katara approached him, he was genuinely surprised. No one ever bothered to go so far as to ask why he abstained from taking part in the more 'social activities', the scar that stretched over half his face usually warded them off. And, if that didn't work, his trademark glower did the trick.

Briefly, he glanced past Katara, eyes locking on Matt. If this was the little brat's attempt at causing a distraction, so be it. Mello'd play along for now, and crush the kid's hopes of making an escape, later.

"Sorry, but this festival isn't my idea of a good time."

Oh. And. That teashop of yours is cursed.

"So you can go ahead and run along, little girl."

You'll really have to excuse Mello for being blunt, Katara.

It was hard to tell if the lady was intentionally distracting Mello or if she was actually getting upset with him. Either way, it was a diversion and she had gone over after he asked. Matt began making his way through the seats and walking toward the back of the stage. It could appear that he wanted to see what other performances there were, right?

So Mello struck a nerve with Katara, fancy that. A shame, really, that he chose to dismiss her outburst with a slight shrug of his shoulders, and a wave of his hand. Honestly, Mello did have a valid point, he had six years on Katara, and if wanted to address her by 'little girl', nothing was going to stop him.

"Yeah? Tell it to someone who cares."

The beeline that Matt started to make toward the back of the stage didn't escape Mello's eyes, but he stayed rooted to his spot. What he had in mind could wait for another moment or two.

"Is mommy around? I'm sure she wouldn't mind comforting her little girl."

Ah, yes, that's a sneer. Mello isn't in a very good mood today.

Whatever the two were up to was gone from Matt's mind. He rounded the stage and began jogging as fast as he could without causing the loose clothing to undo and trip him yet again. His mind ran through what he could do. It was predictable, but he could go look for the clothing shop and hide there. If it took too long to find that, he'd hide in the nearest shop after he tired of searching for it. And then... well, he wouldn't know what to do after that but that was okay. He'd figure it out later.

"Pulling pity strings won't work on me, girlie. My mother's dead too, and I watched her die. And as much as I'd like to stand around and listen to your idle threats, I've got better things to do." Nope, there wasn't the slightest bit of remorse on Mello's part. There never was. No remorse for bringing up such a sensitive issue, none for Katara's mother, and none for his own; that was how Mello operated.

He flashed a smile at Katara, and looked up just in time to see–

holy hell

Mello hadn't expected Matt to take off as fast as he did. When he got ahold of the brat, he was definitely going to reinforce house arrest. No exceptions.

"See you later, little girl."

That said, Mello took off, summoning a bit of filial fire magic to propel himself forward, and give Katara a good startle as a good-bye present.

And this would be Mello nearly falling over because of the restraint that just formed around his ankle. While Mello pushed forward, Katara pulled back, and that did absolute wonders for Mello's balance. Not surprisingly, though, he managed to recover, glaring daggers at Katara before turning his attention to the freshly materialized water whip. When fire met water, steam was created, right? Right. So a burst of flame colliding with the mass would dissolve it? Sure.

Mello's going to give that a try.

"Ah, you're right. I was mistaken. You're an idiot. By helping that kid get away, you've successfully put him in danger." The truth was always the best knife to cut with. "If he gets killed because of your stupidity, the blood is on your hands."
