Luceti Valley - The First Log

Summary: Luceti has become an idyllic and peaceful 50s-esque village. The first few days are just business as usual, right?

August 1st had seemed like an ordinary day in Luceti. But late in the evening, for those night owls who had not turned in yet, they were witness to strange fluctuations in the barrier. Beautiful, really, almost like Luceti had received its own 'Northern Lights', even though it seemed to come from the far east, across the ocean. This ominous light show lasted for all of fifteen minutes before it ceased all together. Skimming the ocean waters, a horde of cultists entered Luceti, cloaked by darkness. Upon reaching the entrance to the tunnels, their leader stepped inside and was followed one by one by his fellow cultists. When the last had entered, the tunnel entrance closed. Across the mountains, the entrance to the tunnels in the village did the same.

Midnight passed without incident, but by three in the morning, the change suddenly came. Minds were altered, forms were changed, and buildings sprang from nowhere.

Much later, on August 2nd, morning settled on a changed village, the new mayor made his way to his mansion with his pair of adorable dobermans at either side of him. The sun shined bright. It was a good day to be a Lucetian.

[There are no words to describe how grateful Jason is about being left out of this Shift. Having fake memories planted in his head, no matter how ridiculous, wasn't something he wanted to deal with. On the plus side, it wasn't that hard to play along with all this. His "home" situation wasn't unfamiliar, even if it was strange. And heck, even the worst areas of 50s Luceti were still a hell of a lot nicer than Crime Alley. Knowing this was fake and temporary leads him to not take this as seriously as he might have otherwise.

Fake or not, though, Jason still has a soft spot for people who've got it rough. If he catches people trying to steal, he's going to offer a helping hand. And if people are getting into fights, he'll help out there, too. It's a little less fun to do it without the mask and cape (which have been tragically misplaced), but hey, it's not like he hasn't done it before.

Because he's unaffected, he hasn't been going to school, either. He spends a lot of time wandering the streets, but when he isn't hanging out in the seedier parts of town, he could just be found at home. His "parents" had an old, rundown car and that is awesome and he'll be happy to waste some time tinkering around with it, thank you very much.]

[His absence at school has been noticed, and Zatanna is more than a little worried when she comes over to the Greyson's as she so often does. She spends some time searching their house looking for him before the quiet sounds of his tinkering lead her to the garage. Then she finally spies him, bent over the engine of his parent's car.]

This is what you missed class for? [Zatanna strolls in, though she's careful. She's wearing a dress she made, and while it isn't perfect she's proud of it. Plus she can't exactly afford the material for more anytime soon--not when she's trying to save up.]

[The first thing Jason wants to do when he hears Zatanna's voice is gush about how much he's missed toying around with this stuff, but then the bit about class really registers with him and he remembers that she's probably not the Zatanna he knows and vice versa. Dick didn't react too well to him not being "in" on this Shift, so he feels like he should try to kind of go along with things, but he doesn't know what Zatanna expects of him, either.

...and besides, there was only so much he was willing to do in order to play along. Either way, he looks up and shrugs. Gotta play it cool.]

Sure, why not? School's overrated.

[Dick's brother wasn't quite as rebellious as this Jason was, but there was no way that he was going to fake school if he could help it.]

Uh, maybe because Dick is working really hard so you can go?

[She doesn't normally get mad at Jay, but wow. That's just a really heartless thing for him to say. Zatanna crosses her arms over her chest, wondering what's gotten into Jay to have him talking like that.]

[Ugh, right. Of course. Dick was the ~responsible~ big brother. It's hard not to roll his eyes at what she says.]

Believe me, Zee, I already know way more than the school could teach me. I can afford to miss a few days.

You know, maybe if you were actually doing something where you got paid? I wouldn't give you such a hard time. [But since he's fooling around, Zatanna isn't impressed. She shakes her head, still stunned that Jay would pull something like this--and more than a little worried.]

What's with you all of a sudden?

Apparently, I've gone nuts. I'm absolutely batty! [He shrugs, not even bothering to hide the bitterness in his voice.] You don't have to worry about us. I'm helping out in my own way, okay?

[For a long moment, all Zatanna can do is stare in shock as Jay just blurts something like that out. But he goes on to tell her not to worry, as if that's even possible now.]

Don't talk like that. [Any harshness in her tone is gone now, replaced by fear. God, if the wrong person heard him say that...] You know what could happen if people thought you were sick.

More than you know, Zee. [He doesn't bother explaining himself, since he knows there's no point. Even if they heard him out, there was no reason for them to believe him. The truth would sound even crazier than all this already did.] But I'm not going anywhere. I promise.

[It's not like he's never avoided authority before, after all. He has way more experience with that than should be allowed.]
