Luceti Valley - The First Log

Summary: Luceti has become an idyllic and peaceful 50s-esque village. The first few days are just business as usual, right?

August 1st had seemed like an ordinary day in Luceti. But late in the evening, for those night owls who had not turned in yet, they were witness to strange fluctuations in the barrier. Beautiful, really, almost like Luceti had received its own 'Northern Lights', even though it seemed to come from the far east, across the ocean. This ominous light show lasted for all of fifteen minutes before it ceased all together. Skimming the ocean waters, a horde of cultists entered Luceti, cloaked by darkness. Upon reaching the entrance to the tunnels, their leader stepped inside and was followed one by one by his fellow cultists. When the last had entered, the tunnel entrance closed. Across the mountains, the entrance to the tunnels in the village did the same.

Midnight passed without incident, but by three in the morning, the change suddenly came. Minds were altered, forms were changed, and buildings sprang from nowhere.

Much later, on August 2nd, morning settled on a changed village, the new mayor made his way to his mansion with his pair of adorable dobermans at either side of him. The sun shined bright. It was a good day to be a Lucetian.

Note: There will be a stand alone log for the homecoming dance. There will be another log for the second stage of the event.

An early day

[Don works long hours, make no mistake, earning as much money as he can so his sister's college fund will grow while she's still young enough to take full advantage of what it can buy. But the typical operating hours of a bar means he still usually beats Norma home.]

[When she gets off her shift, she will find the following: A small pile of money for her counting pleasure; a homemade dinner packed up in the fridge; and a turtle-y older brother, exhausted from a mechanic's labor but waiting to hear about his little sis's day. Which one first?]

[What else would a penny-pincher like Norma look at first. Her hunger and exhaustion all but forgotten for a minute, she gasps at the small stack of bills on the table, rushing forward to snatch it up. After getting her hands on the money, though, the guilt does seep in, and she puts it down, looking around for her brother. It's not long before she spots him and smiles, sheepishly.]

...Y'know, you don't have to give me anything.

[An eyeroll - obvious because, in this world, he doesn't wear a mask.]

If I ever start acting that much like Mom, just take me out and shoot me.

Uuugh! Jeez, don't joke about that! If you ever started to act like mom, me shooting you would be the least of your worries! ...But you've got yourself a deal, definitely.

[Or, well, maybe not shoot him...but Norma could do some damage with a frying pan or something hard and heavy. Maybe one of her books, too.]

[Don usually wins those fights, just by being bigger, but he'll admit Norma's whacks are no joke.]

[Norma sighs, blowing out her breath into her hair, then takes a seat. She can't really complain too much - the strike has been bringing in a lot of lazy workers, but those lazy workers cause a lot of stress...and with their money reserves dwindling, so too have Norma's tips.]

It's been like a zigzagging horse race... Every now and then we'll get a rush, and business will be booming, but those drunken idiots don't do anything other than hoot n' holler and cause me one heck of a headache! Ooooh, and they're total cheapskates, too! I mean, I can't blame 'em, but the amount of work I put in and what I get out of it is start to not be worth the trouble, y'know?

[Don's eyes narrow. Protective Older Brother Mode is go.]

They haven't been trying anything, have they?

No. [Yes.] I mean, not yet, but considering how rowdy they get on most cases...I'm kinda predicting something will happen to someone one day.

[Though Norma an throw a mean punch when she really has to. Problem is, she may get fired if she does that, ugh...]

Are you sure you want to keep working there, Norm?

It's not like I really have a choice, though. You know how hard it is to get a job nowadays, Donnie... Besides, once the morons run outta spending money to get their booze, I'm pretty sure they'll clear out, and I make good tips most of the time there, too. [She sighs, and rubs her face.] There's no way I'm gonna just sit around and let you pay the bills by yourself, either.

You know, we almost have enough...

[Norma nearly slams her head flat on the table, groaning loudly.]

Donnie, that's not the point! I need a job, any job, to get by, y'know? For both of us to get by... Me just saving up and getting into college isn't gonna end how hard it is for us to just make a living. It's always gonna gonna be hard.

[Don looks away. No matter how much he wills Norma to not notice their persistent financial difficulties, she's just too smart and too stubborn.]

You could get a job at the school, maybe. Work-study.

[Much, much too stubborn. ...Though her brother's suggestion does make her pause for a moment, just to digest the idea. That could work, rather well actually. She's not sure if she'd make as much as she does at the bar, but it's worth looking into in the future.]

I...I guess that's an option.
