He makes a startled squawk when he recognizes the face...but what's with the wings?

He'll fly after, chirping to get her attention.]

[Huh, what? Katara halts her forward motion and spreads out her wings, hovering.

...well. What kind of hawk has Luceti wings as well? Must be part of the experiment...]

[Derek will catch up to her and then hover, making greeting sounds.

He even says 'Hello Katara'...but, yeah. So far, no one has been able to understand him that way except Giles, so he's not expecting a response.]

[So Katara peers closer to see if she can recognize the bird by any other means.]

[Well, the Luceti wings tucked in between the other two actually look like a second set of hawk wings, and if Katara pays that close attention to her friends...she might remember that Derek's wings are marked like that.

Otherwise? They're out of luck.

For his part, Derek will make a quiet, but irritated squawk.]

Yeah, that's its annoying. I mean, the translators will work on the regular animals, but not on us when we turn into them? That's far from fair.

In fact, he'll look up at the sun at that point and make a pleased trill. He'd really been missing it.]
