Who: [livejournal.com profile] poorneedyand, [livejournal.com profile] i_speak_softly, [livejournal.com profile] ohmykethe
What: A delicious, not-so-impromptu pizza dinner
When: evening, June 11
Where: Apt. 5, community housing building 1
Summary: Donatello comes over for pizza, as invited pre-draft.
Rating: PG
Kay has never been more than lackadaisical when it comes to housekeeping; she knows perfectly well how to keep a house clean and does, to a certain extent, but some things (dusting in particular) go undone for longer periods of time than would have ever been acceptable in her childhood home. So it is with some nervous energy that she flits around the apartment, straightening what isn't straightened and running a cloth over anything that looks especially neglected. This is, after all, the first time she's had anyone over to the place formally for supper, and for all that she doesn't care most days what it looks like, it matters a bit to her now.

When she's done, the apartment looks as good as it did the day she moved in--or nearly so, anyway--and the card table she's set for dinner, with tablecloth, places, salad, and a water pitcher seems like it'll suit nicely enough. They needn't eat out in the communal dining room, then, nor will they be sitting at the coffee table like a bunch of slobs (read: the way Kay eats, most days). Kay might not be the model housewife of her time, but she knows how to put on a dinner party.

Which leaves her in pedal-pushers and a blouse, holding a dustrag. "I'm going to get dressed," she tells Mildmay. "Can you answer the door if Donatello shows up?"

Don nods. "I don't even know how many times I've read it. It makes a little more sense every time. I don't think I ever found all the sequels, though." He brightens. "I should look for them at the library here."

Mildmay takes this as another opportunity to say nothing and fade into the background. He would admit-- were he ever in the parallel universe where this subject would come up in conversation-- that the say nothing tactic works better when there are more than two other people in the room besides him.

Well, two people and a turtle.
i_speak_softly: (But what do you think?)

Don helps himself to a second slice. "What about your, ah, anthologies? Do you know if any of those are here?"
i_speak_softly: (I may have just won a million dollars!)

[personal profile] i_speak_softly 2011-06-12 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hunter and Eaton." He smiles brightly. "I'll add them to my list."

"I will." He's about to say something else, but then he turns abruptly to the silent-again Mildmay. "Sorry, we're monopolizing. Kay told me you're from a different world. What's it like there?"

Mildmay's first urge is a snarky response, but he did try to stab the guy earlier. He should probably be nice. Still, he doesn't want to talk, and this comes through in how he mumbles his words, not taking as much care to properly pronounce everything as he usually would."Uh... Dunno. Big, I guess." Smooth like a box of rocks, Milly-fox.
i_speak_softly: (I am intrigued)

"Oh, can you do magic?"

Don is much more comfortable with that kind of thing than he used to be, and he might not even mind a dinner-table demonstration.

Unluckily for Donatello, Mildmay lives to make things awkward. And talking about magic is not actually a great way to unawkwardify him. He shakes his head, "fuck, no. I steered the hell clear of that shit." He shakes his head. If he were in a better mood, he'd note that magic doesn't make things interesting or fun or cute, but Mildmay is too embarrassed right now to give a shit about what other people think. Obviously everyone already hates him. Why waste the effort?
i_speak_softly: (But what do you think?)

[personal profile] i_speak_softly 2011-06-15 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Don understands the sentiment. "Magic never worked out very well for me in my own world, but in Luceti it's been pretty helpful. Have you heard about the Filial spirits?"

[identity profile] ohmykethe.livejournal.com 2011-06-15 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Mildmay frowns. "Yeah, that was in that guide, right?"
i_speak_softly: (Prestidigitational pontification)

[personal profile] i_speak_softly 2011-06-16 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
"It took me a while to understand it. Professor Sage is a spellcaster; her experience with the spirits is probably different than for the non-magically-inclined of us." Don smiles self-deprecatingly; if he was smarter he would have understood more quickly. "I contacted the spirits through meditation. Maybe something similar would work for you?"

[identity profile] ohmykethe.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
"I ain't touching it." Mildmay's tone is disapproving, and hopes that this dismissal means he'll be blissfully ignored once more.
i_speak_softly: (It was nothing much)

[personal profile] i_speak_softly 2011-06-16 11:26 am (UTC)(link)
"Ah... I've learned Healing and Wind magic. I'm not as good at them as other people, though."

[identity profile] ohmykethe.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
"Healing magic?" This, finally, gets Mildmay's attention.
i_speak_softly: (Okay but what if -)

[personal profile] i_speak_softly 2011-06-17 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
"It's powerful stuff. A skilled healer can knit a broken bone, almost as good as new, in a few minutes. For something so useful, it isn't very hard to learn either. Definitely worth the effort."

[identity profile] ohmykethe.livejournal.com 2011-06-17 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Mildmay still has no intention of learning healing magic. But it's good that it's being learned. "Good to know," he says.
