Brave New World

Who: Link (Skyward Sword) and YOU!
What: Newfeather time~
Where: Right smack in the middle of everything.
When: March 5th, midafternoon
Summary: Apparently going to bed is dangerous business and you might wake up somewhere completely random!
Rating: T tops, probably.

The sun glaring on the back of his eyelids wasn't a way that Link particularly enjoyed waking up but he was quite used to it by now. Work had to be done. There was still the rest of the house to build and food to gather and later Ledd was going to help him dig a field so they could grow pumpkins and the like. And of course there was Zelda's answer to look forward to...

Link supposed he shouldn't have sprung his confession on her, but he'd been fit to burst ever since their journey ended and they'd started about the task of getting settled on the surface; he just couldn't keep it to himself anymore! He knew he shouldn't pressure her, not after all she'd been through, but he couldn't help but be anxious.

With a sigh, the hero opened his eyes, expecting to see hasty, rough walls and the sun rudely streaming in on his face but was instead startled into sitting up by the sight of several buildings, strange plants, and people. He let out a cry of surprise and dismay, pushing himself to his feet and whirling around, finding nothing familiar in his surroundings and more worrying, not finding Zelda either.

"Old legends state that Hylians, the chosen people of the goddesses, descended from the sky. This Link must be from that era," she explains. It's kind of difficult for her to not get excited. Someone from the beginning of Hyrule, sitting right in front of her! She has so many questions!

"I suppose that that would make you the first, wouldn't it?"

Settle down, Zelda. You'll have plenty of time to pick the kid's brains later.

"If that is the case, then you may be the Hero of Time as he was first known to be before he-" a vague gesture toward his own Link. "-laid claim to that title." Maybe, possibly. He certainly looked the part, at least. They could be jumping to conclusions here, but so far, the newcomer's words seem to line up. Sheik frowned, thoughtful.

"Would you try touching the blade?" If he is truly the Hero of those legends from long ago, then the Master Sword should react to him and allow him to wield it.

"Well, I.. I don't know. I mean, we could all be really related, maybe." His attention gets grabbed by Zelda as she speaks immediately after the other Link. "Ah, yeah, I'm from Skyloft. What do you mean Goddesses? I-" He cuts himself off as Sheik begins speaking and remains silent even after the Sheikah suggests he take the Master Sword.

He nearly asks his doppleganger's permission but some petulant little voice inside his head says no, it's his friend, his right, why should he have to ask? But the glance that passes between the heroes is not one of older and younger, but of equals and no words even need spoken.

Link takes the Master Sword carefully in hand as Time offers it up, hilt first, and he feels a surge in his heart at the familiar weight in his right hand. He closes his eyes and just feels the cool metal against his palm, feels the welcoming presence of Fi - real or imagined, he can't tell - sleeping within the sword, silently greeting her master, her friend, from ages past. It may have only been days since he set the sword to rest in the Sealed Temple, but even so...

Carefully, the hero brings the sword up and rests his forehead against the flat of the dimly-glowing blade, whispering quietly. "I've missed you."

There's very mild envy on Link's face as he watches the little exchange - while the Master Sword feels so, so right in his hand, more than any other blade or any other weapon of any type ever has, he's never had this connection that his predecesor appears to have with the blade.

Swallowing, he forces down the very faint hint of jealousy. "You're right-handed, huh?" he observes quietly.

The fact that this Link is right-handed when all the others use their left hand does not escape Zelda's notice. She looks between the two with worry. There was something going on here between them, something she didn't entirely understand.

"Do you feel anything?" Zelda finally asks. If there is someone inside the sword, some type of spirit... maybe he can awaken it.

Sheik watches the exchange with something akin to reverence, and shakes his head when Zelda pipes up.

"There is no doubt the sword recognizes him as its master," just look at that glow. It doesn't usually do that.

Pleased that his guess had been correct, Sheik's all but smiling.

Link lowers the sword slowly and opens his eyes with a much more peaceful look on his face than before. He offers the Master Sword hilt first back to his successor. He smiles gently. "I am, yes. They helped me fix it at the academy."

"I'm not sure if what I felt was real or not, but I think she's still there, yes." His gaze remains on the Hero of Time, though his eyes flick briefly to Sheik. "She chose you, to continue to protect the land of the Goddess and the Triforce, if what you said earlier is true. She's as much your friend as she is mine."

Granted... the sword did glow gently for the elder hero and he can't help but feel a bit of a loss as the blade leaves his hands once more.

Link hesitates to take it back, actually - after seeing how it reacted to Sky, he's suddenly second-guessing himself. (And, incidentally, totally confused at what he means by the academy 'fixing' it, but that's probably not the important part here.) Finally, he does reach out to take it (with his left hand), although the blade remains loose in his hand, the scabbard ignored.

"But if you don't have a sword here..." His tongue feels thick in his mouth as he forces the words out. "I can't hear her as much as you can, anyway. So... you can keep using it. If you want."

"I can use any sword. Granted it won't be as special, but if you can't hear her it's all the more reason for you to keep her with you until you can."

In his heart of hearts, Link would be lying if he ever said he didn't want Fi back. A little piece of home in this strange world is tempting, but he can't in good conscience take something that he can see means so much to his descendant. He'd come to terms with their parting, he couldn't go back on it now.

Link hesitates - if other swords feel as not-right to the other Link as they do to him, then it won't be fun - but finally nods, sheathing the blade again.

"...Okay. If you're sure." Tentatively, he smiles. "But if you ever have to go on a draft or something, you can use it then, okay?"

The tense moment out of the way, Zelda smiles at the pair softly. Now she can ask for a little clarification, right?

"Why did you sound surprised that there are three goddesses? You knew what about the Triforce, after all." The fact that there's a goddess to go with each piece is only natural!

Sheik doesn't see much need to interject at this point. He lightly touches Zelda's arm.

"I need to prepare dinner," he says to her quietly, then heads to the kitchen. He'll let them sort that part out on their own. Zelda is much more knowledgeable about the Triforce than he.

It's true, every other sword feels a little bit off after parting with Fi, but he'd been getting on well enough at home and he expected he could continue to do so. Still, his successor's offer was appreciated. "I might take you up on that, sure."

Zelda's question catches him off guard. Why in the world doesn't she know that? "I guess there's others, but, uh... we only really worship one at home."

Even that was pretty awkward now, at least for Link and Zelda, considering.

"Just one?" Link blinks in surprise. "Which one, Farore or Nayru or Din?"

He's... sort of hoping for Farore, truth be told. They have Ganondorf to thank for his mild dislike of Din...

"I'm curious which one, too. It's common to feel a resonance with one of the goddesses more so than the others, but they are usually worshipped as a unit."

Zelda, of course, prefers Nayru. Her look of academic curiosity probably gives that away. No, Sky, she doesn't want to eat you. ~~Just your brains.~~

"U-uh... none of those, actually, though I think they do have something to do with the Triforce probably. We, uh... we worship Hylia."

He keeps an eye on Zelda as he says it, curious at her reaction.

Not much reaction from Link, at least. "Like the lake?" he wonders out loud, "Or... like Hylians, I guess..."

Zelda, on the other hand, has quite the reaction to hearing her last name mentioned along with worship. Why is he staring at her while he says it? Why does he look like he thinks she should know something? This is very uncomfortable.

The young knight laughs maybe a bit too loudly. "Maybe! I really don't know. But it doesn't matter, right? I mean, Farore and Nayru and Din are still around from when I'm from. I'm not sure Nayru or Din like me very much though."

He grins sheepishly, remembering the trials. Faron had been one thing, but Lanayru and Eldin made him want to tear his hair out. At least Hylia's had been on Skyloft, where he knew the terrain like the back of his hand.

Zelda making that face is making him uncomfortable though, so he gracelessly changes the subject. "So, uh, I'm pretty hungry! What's Sheik making for dinner? Do you mind if I have some?"

"Sure, I bet you can!" Link grins back, tension defused. (Besides, of course Farore likes him the best!) Peering into the kitchen, he returns to the little group. "And we're having fish. It's really nice the way Sheik cooks it."

"Wait just a moment. Why do you look like you're trying to avoid something?"

Don't think she won't grab your ears, because she will. Zelda leans towards Sky, making a very Not Amused face. He'd best be honest if he knows what's good for him.

"B-but I'm hungry..." He laughs again, sheepishly. "C'mon Zel, don't look at me like that! It makes your cheeks look puffy!"

Yeah that's right, he went there! That face is just so much like the ones his Zelda makes though, he couldn't help it.

Sorry, Zelda. Link's just going to hastily stifle a laugh behind his hands. "How about we talk more after dinner?" he suggests, tips of his ears going faintly pink as his stomach pipes up in agreement, "You can tell us about your time!"

She's one step ahead of you, heroes. Being referred to in such a familiar fashion? Not something she's exactly used to. Blushing, Zelda hurries to the kitchen.

As they all file into the kitchen, Sheik's busy with the rice-cooker. He's been listening, though, and he doesn't exactly appreciate that sort of familiar tone with Zelda when she's apparently uncomfortable with it. So new guy, you're getting a stern glare, even as he ushers Zelda to the half-chopped vegetables in the effort to give her the opportunity to compose herself.

"Let me make one thing clear. Zelda is not the same girl you know. Therefore, I expect you to treat her with the respect she deserves." Hero of legend or no, there are some things you just don't do. Well, not within earshot of an overprotective Sheikah guardian, at least.
