So... meanwhile, back at the ranch, there were opportunities for those who have caught their journals to know who's coming, and those who have not caught their journals to be taken by surprise at the new Water Tribe member in the house.

[Wow. Sokka gives her a flat look of "wow I can't believe you're doing that", then decides it's not a big deal because Toph is way worse. So.]

[But she laughs, and picks up her speed just enough to catch up to Katara so they're neck-and-neck. Her heart pumps fast, and it's loud in her ears by the time they make it to the river. She's panting too, but she doesn't feel the need to double over and hold her knees. No, she's got power and pretty good stamina.]

But I guess [pant] here we are.

[breezing]

It's fun! I mean, now there're four of us, so we could even play airball! [ Ikki pauses. ] Well, I mean, when you get better. Which you will! 'Cause Grandpa Aang and Uncle Roku can help!

We couldn't. [...] I was violating curfew by being out, and Bolin and Mako resisted police action. All three of us were arrested to make sure Korra wasn't.

[Oh look, righteous indignation.

She turns to stare at Asami incredulously.]

[...Being judged by Katara is alarming. She hangs her head somewhat, in spite of the other woman being shorter] Korra raised two stone slabs to attack them, but if she'd done that she'd've broken the law and been arrested too. So we [Mako] told her she had to back off and regroup with Tenzin.

[Katara's breathing is already beginning to even out, and she notes a similar resistance to the strain of the exercise in the other girl with approval.]

Yeah. [A deep breath - control - and she shrugs and smiles a little.]

I was just trying to escape before anyone caught us leaving and wanted to come along, but sometimes it feels good just to run.

[To be honest? It had done her good too.]

[Tenzin. Her son. Another city councilman. Of course, that makes sense.]

That sounds more like the Dai Li than any police force Toph would have trained! That's insane!

[Her indignation, you see, was not directed at you.]

What was the matter with them, arresting innocent people, following orders blindly - that's the kind of thing that lead to the war in the first place!

[She frowned. Going back to an ally was smart, but the whole thing was a travesty, as far as she was concerned.]

I certainly hope Tenzin [my son] got you out.

[...Oh good, it's not her. She lowers her head. Spending a whole night in jail was. Not the worst thing in her life, but certainly not a highlight of it]

From what I hear, he tried. But he was refused at the police station and told to bring it to the Chairman of the Council - Tarrlok. So... he couldn't do it that same night and went home. [...] Korra didn't agree with waiting though. She confronted Tarrlok that night in his office, and after that- that's when he kidnapped her.

[...] Ling Bei Fong broke me and the others out the next morning to help her and Tenzin rescue Korra. [She doesn't make it clear how they were duped. It's not super relevant yet]

[Well, good on Lin. And she'd have been disappointed in Tenzin - this son she supposedly has - if he hadn't been on his way to do the same thing.]

In the end though- [And she smiles... somewhat strained, given her own personal memories from that night] Korra rescued herself, we just found her when she used all her energy doing that.

He apparently kidnapped me... and is a bloodbender.

Was a bloodbender. [She caught that from Ikki's outbursts on the journal, but... she really hasn't registered it until now. Wow.]

[She brings about another halfhearted smile for the girl, trying to mask her own insecurities.]

That'll be fun. Once I learn how to airbend I'll beat all three of you.

[She pulls her face away from the can, grinning a bit. Korra's upper lip is wet from what she did.]

Yeah, it's a lot better than the stuff we had. [It's not so bitter.]

[Satisfied as he is, he can't help but quip:]

It's depressing to think that seventy years of innovation later and we never manage to make a decent soda.
