So... meanwhile, back at the ranch, there were opportunities for those who have caught their journals to know who's coming, and those who have not caught their journals to be taken by surprise at the new Water Tribe member in the house.

[He just holds her there for a moment, feeling flashes of how she broke down after Hama's defeat. And he gets a sick feeling in his stomach when he realizes she might have come here to Luceti from that very moment. To carry that suffering for so long... but he's here now. He has to find a way to make a difference.

Aang begins to talk softly as he speaks to her. Romance seems so far away now. He just wants the tears to disappear.]

Katara... I-I know this must be really difficult for you. It's... it's a horrible skill that I hate to remember, and just thinking about it is making you like this.

[A pause as more sobs come out.]

I am going to do everything I can to find a way so that we can stop him without resorting to it. But... I know that we might not have a choice. It's... it's not bad if you're using it to protect your family. I just want - want to be there if that happens. So that I can help you, to hold onto yourself. After all those times you helped me out of the Avatar State... it's the least I can do, Katara.

[Quietly:] I want you to be there too, Aang. If it - starts changing me -

[She pulls away to look up at him.]

You need to tell me. You need to make me see it.

[He looks her in the eyes, while finding her hands and clasping them.]

I will, Katara. I won't let it change you.

[She doesn't look away from him, all of her hope pinned on him and resting in her eyes. She grips his hands tightly.]

Okay.

[She'll just. Believe him, then. On purpose. He'll be there (shehopes,shehopes) and he'll stop her if it starts turning her into... Hama.]

[He knows it'll be hard, seeing her do the same thing Hama did, to turn someone's body into a puppet. But he also knows that she's Katara. If anyone can use it to help others, it's her.

But still, if Amon winds up being more powerful than her... he'll need to be there.]

If we work together... we can do this, Katara. By being able to... control b-both of these things... We can protect our family and still be ourselves.

[She gasps softly, because what he says, the comparison to the Avatar State - something so natural, and so frightening, something that took him away from her, something he was supposed to learn to control - and bloodbending was the most right, the most healing thing he could possibly say about her learning this.

He really thought it was okay.

Her eyes fill with tears again - tears of relief.

And with a small sound she surges forward to embrace him again.]

[He can feel this shift, and it gives a rising feeling in his heart. He had felt guilty, back after Katara had first learned bloodbending, that despite some attempts to comfort her, they mostly let her work through it on her own. This was like a second chance, and once she went to hold him again, he felt like his message was getting through. It's okay. You're still Katara. You're always welcome here.

Aang held onto her tightly for as long as she would take and made some occasional soft rubbings of her back.]

[...rubbing her back so near her wings felt. Strange.

And she doesn't really want to pull away. Everything was wrong right now, she didn't know which way was up or down and she was signing herself up to do something she hated, but if these people came in with a vendetta against her family, hurt her family, she'd hate herself worse - she just felt so lost right now.

So Katara just... shuts her eyes and holds on tightly. For once, she'll let him be her anchor, because right now it feels like every way she turns she's lost. And she'll let herself forget, for these few seconds, that it wasn't fair that she was doing this. That she didn't have the right to hold on to him. That their future was mapped out and certain and that it made her want to scream, made her feel like she was drowning.

She lets herself forget and just holds on. Just Katara, he'd said, and just Aang.]

[He wanted to be more. He wanted to be so much more. But he was afraid. Afraid that Katara couldn't love him here, afraid that any attempt would just push her away with the way this future stuff got her thinking. And he was afraid that, even with what he now knew of the future, he might not really be able to make her happy here. And he already knew how easily this place could tear them apart and use their love as a weapon after remembering how quickly Katara's previous boyfriend had disappeared.

But right now? They seemed to be fine just holding each other. Aang was trying his best to just spread comfort throughout her. Usually he was the one who had to be hugged, and Katara was always there when he needed it. Aang was trying his best to repay this, and he held on for what felt like - and what he wished was - forever. Whenever he felt the end of the hug nearing, he lightly spoke to her.]

You must be tired.

It's been a long day.

[She recognizes that as the cue it is and - somewhat self-consciously - begins to pull away.]

[Aang's still a bit reluctant in his pulling away, his hand lingering on her shoulder for a few seconds before he pulls it back as well. He nods as he gets up to his feet.]

And tomorrow could be long too. [With the house overpacked now - and that's without foreknowledge of any other vomit-inducing misadventures that could happen the next day.] We'll need all the rest we can get.

Yeah. [She gets to her feet, smiles for him.] You're right. We should at least try and get some sleep.

[He smiles back as he begins the walk, his feet starting to feel like Toph.]

Definitely. I think that sleep... will come a little easier, this time.

[And she... follows along.]

I hope so.

[...]

I'm glad we talked, Aang.

[Glad you're feeling better.]

Me too, Katara. It really helped. [A reassuring smile] I mean it. And... I hope it helped you, too.

It did.

[Knowing that he'd support her in this meant... a lot.]
