No, no, no. [Already getting frustrated.] It's not nonsense! This is our beautiful language! Whichever one that is. Start by tracing your finger- Oh, wait. Ahem! These two letters make a "grr" sound. Like a tiger, or a frustrated spelling teacher!

Bah! Gr...Grrret-in-guh? And what's that wavy piece there?

That's an e, you blithering idiot! [Eggman sighs and snatches up the paper.] Here, it'll be easier if I just read it to you!

It didn't look like an e to me. [muttered sulk.] I don't need reading anyway.

What does it say?

Let's see. [Eggman doesn't know why, but he's so tempted to lie to Murray and tell him terrible things. Instead, he reads the card out word for word and what he reads might as well have been terrible lies considering how insane it is.] Well, that's certainly more bizarre than my card was.

[Something about kittens seems vaguely familiar, so it must be right! And of course he must throw himself fully into this. They need him! But wait...]

I need gum to live? I demand gum! I can't pet the poor kittens if I'm dead! Deader!

But wait, my arm! Did you take it? Oh...you're not a bird, are you...? But whatever bird does come will pay! [Horribly, yes, there must be some kind of terrible vengeance for this, right? Right?]

[Eggman's just... Blinking at that gum thing. Why would a skull need gum to live? Or unlive.

But that image is quickly pushed aside by the image of Murray trying to attack a bird.]

What are you going to do? Bite it until it gives up your arm?

If I have to! For the kittens!

...would that work?

Er... [Eggman thinks about this for a moment, and there's a silence as he strokes his chin and imagines a skull snapping at a bird that's way out of his reach.] Of course! Without a doubt!

Hmph, birds had better beware. I must get my arm back. For the glory of petting! [And it suddenly feels right so after a slightly awkward pause.] Bwa ha ha ha!

[And Eggman instinctively joins in with that laugh.]

Oh ho ho ho, HO HO HO! [And then he stops and regains his composure.] I don't know why I did that.

It felt...good though.

It did! [Eggman isn't sure why, but he feels happier having done that.] It's good to laugh sometimes!

Yes! And, and scary!

You're afraid of laughing?

I'm not afraid of anything! [except pirates.] But a good laugh sounds scary to other people! I thought I sounded scary anyway.

[Eggman didn't think so, but he did think his own sounded pretty menacing. Maybe a hero shouldn't laugh like that.]

Careful now, you don't want to go scaring all of those kittens you wanted to pet.

...I!...I don't...Ahh but any who dare threaten the kittens! They will quake in terror!

Unless you run out of gum.

Er...there is...there is that...I don't suppose you have some...?

Absolutely not! You don't get pearly-white teeth like these chewing gum! [He grins for emphasis. Or do you? Eggman could sure go for some gum right now.] Delicious, sugary gum.

I'm dead! I'm surprised I can chew at all! White teeth are the least of my worries. Sugary? [Strange, he was sure there was something...meaty about it.]

Yes! Sugary and sweet! Strawberry flavoured, perhaps.

Sounds tasty! And life giving?

Who knows? [Eggman starts to look off towards the shops.] All I know is I need to go and get some!
