Yes. ['We just had some kind of argument for reasons I don't understand.' What a terrible thing to want to tell someone.] It's all right, though. I haven't met many people at all who still have their memories.

[She offers a polite half-bow.] My name is Mia.

And you already know my name. [But since Mia is doing something like that, Walter feels the need to stand and bow slightly with a hand to his chest.] I'm... It's nice to meet you, Mia. Again, I guess.

It is nice to meet you again, too. [And at the proper size.] I know it must be distressing to have no memories, but you seem to be taking it all in stride.

[blackteriques]

It's not so much distressing as it is ... frustrating. [Any formal politeness that had been on his face a moment ago fades into a exasperated expression.] That constant question in your mind that says 'This is supposed to be familiar, isn't it?' [He shakes his head just thinking about it.]

[She can't say she understands. She doesn't. All of her memories are where they ought to be.]

What have you found to be almost familiar?

Water. [He gestures to the fountain.] But that could be because of what my card says. [He removes his card from his pouch, turning it over in his hands. He hesitates when he thinks about handing it over to the girl, but soon does so -- he's not going to get anyway just holding back, is he? Who cares if it's potentially embarrassing? If she knew him, she would know if it was real or not.]

[As Mia looks over the card, she frowns a lot. She thinks Walter is a fine person, but not one who plays well with others. Then she reaches the last one and her face lights up.]

I think I've met that monster! You use it to fly.

[blackteriques]

[That gives him pause. That particular point was what he was most skeptical about, and here this girl was telling him that it was true.]

So this card is accurate? [Excuse him if he sounds incredulous.]

Hmm. It...seems to be, in most ways. You do enjoy swimming and that is how you choose to catch your fish. [She won't speak to the blue-and-blonde-hair thing. It's a little personal.] And the "monster" is not very frightening.

[blackteriques]

[Choosing to catch fish? By swimming? He tilts his head and makes a face as he tries to imagine this, but eventually just shakes his head.]

I'm disappointed that none of it sounds familiar, now that you've confirmed it's at least mostly true.

You said water was familiar, at least. [Sitting by the fountain, at that.] But only a few weeks ago we talked about how you thought fishing by swimming was much faster than fishing using a pole. The monster is...ah, almost like a black butterfly. I don't know how you use it.

[blackteriques]

Black butterfly. [Uh. Please excuse the skeptical tone and incredulous expression.] I have a butterfly monster inside of me?

[He doesn't sound particularly scared or disgusted. Just confused.]

Is it inside of you? [The card says that but her mind was on other things.] I thought it was some sort of...summoning. Then again... [The Djinn are sort of "inside" of her too.]

It really isn't scary. And it's strong enough to lift you and me into the air.

[He nods at her words, taking some comfort in the way she says that it isn't scary. So it seemed like it wasn't something that was feared, even if it was called a "monster."]

What do you mean 'summoning'? Is it common here?

[frost_jewel]

What I meant just now is something...like a creature of power that has a partnership with you, but is not necessarily "inside" of you physically. It is hard to describe to anyone, memories or not, I think.

[blackteriques]

I see. [He sighs loudly, kicking his heel against impatiently against the side of the fountain.] I guess that means that's something to ... try later on. Figuring out how to bring out that 'monster.'

[But what if he couldn't make it go away again? The card did say something about it being dangerous to others...]

Maybe you can tell me something about this place, then. Do you know why people lost their memories?

[May she sit beside you at this fountain? It's easier to do this sitting down.]

Part of living here is getting used to routine...disruptions. [People have reacted negatively to "experiment".] This is one of them; most of the people here have lost their memories. It isn't always this, or even anything like this. Last time, the trees started gossiping about us.

Which tells me that the memory loss is almost certainly temporary.

Well that's a relief. [Better than the "hopefully" that the card presented.] Is there any reason why some people still have their memories and other don't?

One set or the other is just unlucky. I'm not sure which, right now.

[She was only half joking.] There is no reason to it that I have found.

Luck is probably a better guess than anything. [He looks cross just thinking about how long this might go on.] ...How temporary is 'temporary'?

It will probably last about a week. More, if luck fails once again.

[Excuse him while he groans in frustration. At least some personality aspects are still intact.]

Then this is going to be a very long week...

Yes it is. [It's hard to have everyone forgetting you, too.] I'm sorry.

[blackteriques]

[He twitches a little at her apology, looking up and shaking his head sharply.] Don't apologize -- it's not your fault. You have to deal with this too. Do any of your friends still have their memories?

[frost_jewel]

None that I know about.

[She didn't mean for that to sound so heavy. Mia shakes her head and smiles at Walter instead.]

Thank you for being concerned. I'm glad to still have my memories, especially because so many other people have the wrong information written down for them.
