[Lupin leaned up against the console and grinned at the display. Whoever this man was, he was skilled with a gun. Not skilled enough a voice in his mind noted, but he brushed that aside. Instead he clapped in appreciation, all the while curious about what else the man could do.]

Should I...go again?

[He glances to Lupin over his shoulder and then motions for the man to join him.]

Why don't you give it a try? Show me what you can do.

[He pointed a finger at himself, as if questioning whether Steve was asking the right target, before a quick glance around told him that there was no other culprit. Lupin waved a hand in denial, but crossed the distance anyway. A note was pulled out and passed off to Steve, as if that explained everything. On the back was another hastily written note:]

do you have a name?

[Steve accepts the note and looks it over, recognizing it to be a card similar to the one he found the first morning he woke up with amnesia. So his name is Lupin. He turns the note around.]

Yeah, I'm Steve. Steve Altman. It's nice to meet you. [He holds out a hand.]

[Lupin shook Steve's hand, sharing the sentiment, while he pulled out another note that he had written out earlier.]

it doesn't feel normal not to talk.]

[It was followed by an apologetic smile. He really had no answer for it.]

[He returns the smile with a sympathetic one of his own.]

Yeah, it must make communicating difficult. Do you know why you can't...?

[He shrugged, feeling that the gesture was useless, and tapped on the note once more. It didn't feel normal; that was all he knew.]

[Steve doesn't have an answer to that so he holds out to the gun.]

Here. Give it a try.

[Lupin sighed, defeated on that front, but accepted the Magnum with a curious smile. He held it first with two hands--then with one, as he aimed it at the target...

And fired a single round. The another. And another. His precision was on a similar level as Steve's, but the recoil of the Magnum was almost stunningly familiar.]

[Steve grins and gives him a short round of applauds.]

You're not too bad yourself.

[redjacketthief]

[Have an embarrassed grin; Lupin's not sure where that came from!]

I think you might be a natural.

[redjacketthief]

[He shrugged and offered Steve a sly grin with his next note.]

Like you?

[neversurrender]

[Steve chuckles and shakes his head.]

I think for me it was beginner's luck.

[redjacketthief]

[He just grinned like a smug cat, feeling like he understood more than Steve right then. Was Steve certain about his assumption?]

[neversurrender]

[He raises a brow at Lupin's grin and gives him a skeptical look.]

What?

[redjacketthief]

[Lupin snorted with laughter, still not entirely believing that Steve was blind enough to not even suspect that his skills with a gun were better than those of a layman. Though Lupin couldn't explain his own skills, or how he could see that Steve knew how to fire a revolver, it was still a moment that he found very amusing.]

[Maybe he's just not ready to think too deeply about why he seems to be skilled with a gun. That would just open up a road of new questions he doesn't have answers for.]

Alright, it's not that funny. [Whatever it is he's laughing about, because Steve still isn't quite sure.]

[Lupin took a deep breath, consciously calming down the laughter enough for him to focus on writing out another note.]

you're funny!

Do you want to go out for coffee sometime?

[Because...coffee. It felt like a thing.]

[neversurrender]

[Steve chuckles and shakes his head.]

I'm not trying to be funny.

[The invite earns a grin.]

Sure. Do you mean right now? Or...just sometime?

[redjacketthief]

Sometime. If we remember this.

[Because neither of them knew for certain, but it was at least something that they could look forward to.]

Alright. [Pause.]

But I'll be really upset if I remember and you don't.

[He grins.]

[except for the fact that there was no money...but he didn't remember that.]

[yep neither did steve. looks like lupin is off the hook.]
