The nurse was no happier than Rogue was. She was livid in fact. "This is my home. I want to help that girl as much as you do. But I can't. So go ahead. Take her wherever you want. It's a madhouse anyway."

Spike, for his parts, was equal parts annoyed at the nurse and the situation. But to hell with it. He had permission and started to walk past the nurse and Rogue through the doors leading to the patient ward.

Rogue had no pity to spare for the nurse, "Don't blame other people for followin' bad orders, if ya even gettin' them."

She turned and walked to catch up with Spike and the girl. She might trust herself to have a conversation with whoever got in her way; she didn't trust Spike to have the same restraint. Especially since she didn't want to believe that what he said was going down was actually happening.

Spike spent some time wandering through the hall, not caring which way he was going. But he could follow his nose. It's what led him, ultimately, into a lab he had no place being. Some demon-looking fellow was busy at work.

"The cure. Where is it?"

Mordin quickly turned, gun in hand, towards the intruder. His eyes narrowed, his finger tight on the trigger. Things were getting tense as it was: the plague was spreading faster than ever, the horde was knocking at the door at that very moment, and the whole village was going to be leveled in little more than a day. The last thing he needed right now was an angry mob clinging to false hope.

"Not sure who let you in here, but you're misinformed."

Oh. A gun. In front of a kid. How nice.

"Mordin, right?" Rogue started, stepping between Spike and the alien and - let's not forget - the little girl now clinging to Spike's legs in fear. It was just a sad day when she was the one who had to be calm. Especially since she really, really didn't feel calm.

"That's exactly what I'm hopin' ta hear. 'cause the rumor goin' on out there is that someone in here is limitin' the initial cure ta Lucetians first, instead of doin' things on a case-by-case basis. An' we've got a sick little girl here, lookin' for some help."

Spike did not look deterred. Perhaps he'd simply forgotten he was now weak to bullets. But he was angry and had a small girl in need of help.

"I know you've got something. I don't know what it is, but I want it for her, even if she is from some other enclosure."

Mordin looks down at the frightened girl holding tightly onto Spike's leg. His brow tightens. A child. In the lab. At a time like this? He sighs of frustration, lowering the weapon, if only not to continue scaring the child. He turns slightly, to place the beaker in his other hand down on the counter.

"Enclosure is irrelevant. There is no cure. Not yet. Won't be, if I continue to be interrupted."

"If the enclosure is irrelevant, ya might wanna make that clear to your nursin' staff."

In respect to him putting down his gun, Rogue propped one hand on her hip. But she didn't move.

"They seem ta think 'Lucetians' are gettin' priority. An' more ta the point--" before Spike can repeat himself and get nasty, "--if you're too busy ta hand out the pro-cure, tell us where we can go ta get it. The girl needs somethin'."

Spike was going to get nasty anyway. But he could, at least, be somewhat reasonable.

"Pro-cure? Look, I don't care what you label it. This girl needs it, right? So make with the cure, Ackbar."

Somewhat.

Mordin's eyes go wide in an instant. They wanted him to give the proto-cure to a child?

"Aftereffects of proto-cure too much for a child! Psychological trauma, physical pain. Mind is awake, but body still deteriorates. Better off without it. No memory."

It was a disgusting thing to say, to refuse medicine to a child, but the implications... to have your body die while your mind is fresh. It would destroy her.

"You're tellin' me death is preferable to some trauma. 'cause whether it's with the end the Malnosso have planned for us," she deliberately did not refer to the bomb in front of the girl, "or the virus, she ain't got a lot of time. An' you can live through trauma."

"She needs. Something." His menacing tone, for a moment, gave way for a slip of desperation. "We're already in over our heads on trauma. She just needs a shot at living."
