[He staggers a bit, but mostly he just snickers.]

More like Lord of the Soaked. [She pokes the temple of his head.]

[He gives her a small glare.]

I could still make good on that threat, you know.

Or you could tell me about you and Suki.

Fine, fine! [A shrug followed by a sigh.] We're together, I guess. But she doesn't know about the engagement. I mean... how do I tell her something like that?

...If she doesn't eventually remember will you propose again?

[markofthewise]

[He has a hollow laugh at that.]

Propose? Again? I. I don't think I could do that. Not here.

[installing]

[She lowers her gaze to the ground after nodding.]

Yeah, I hear you. Sorry about that. [Gently she rests a hand on his back, trying to be nice.]

She doesn't remember anything. But... she's from my future. A year later, so I guess that makes it kind of fair, right? I don't remember the time we spent at home together.

[It had the benefit, at least, of making the relationship deeper for her part than it could be. Even it was some distance away from where Sokka was.]

You know you two really work well together. I think with time maybe it'll smooth out, you know?

I hope so. [He stares up at the sky.] I was so afraid of this happening before. But now... I guess I'm okay with it. But I feel like I shouldn't be.

[installing]

I'm not sure what to say. [She lock arms with him, all buddy-buddy despite him being all wet.]

Maybe it's because it's something that you didn't want to happen, but now that it has you're learning how to deal with it?

It's not just that. [As they get to the Rec Center, he pushes the door open.]

I'm not the same person that I left back home. That Sokka, in three years, won't be the same person as me. I know the easy thing is that Suki is Suki. But. I keep wondering about my Suki.

I don't get it. Really, I don't.

I'm not "that Sokka." She's not "my Suki." Am I not "Ed's Winry"? Should our time apart keep us away from each other like that? It hasn't, but should it? Our goals might be different now, and so our new experience may make us look at things different, but aren't we same at our core? I grew up the same way that Winry did. You grew up the same way that Sokka did. Going back home may erase our experiences here, but it doesn't change our core. Or at least I don't think so.

It sounds like you're making things more complicated.

Cores can change. And memories aren't just disposable. The last experiment showed us that.

[Well, it showed them that they ARE disposable, but that they shouldn't be.]

Cores can change? It's not like you're a car and we can just replace the engine. Sure some experiments mess with us, but when they're done Katara is still you sister. When they're done Suki is still someone you care about. After all this time things like that don't change.

[markofthewise]

Sure. There's that. But Suki... this Suki, she doesn't even know we're engaged. I don't even know that we're engaged. Does it just not count anymore because it hasn't happened to her?

I wouldn't say it "doesn't count." It matters to you. She's just... not there yet. You've been through a lot together, and you've loved her for a long time. She just isn't at that... level yet.

[Like a month ago when she told Ed she loved him. He wasn't ready for that. Winry knew she loved him even before she came here, and hasn't stopped loving him. But he... for him all this is new and recent. He's definitely a few steps behind.]

[markofthewise]

So, what? I just propose again when she is ready? Well, that'll be nice. I'll be all practiced up from the first time I did it.

[Here he's gone from sounding lost to just bitter. Which is probably new for her, since he's long managed to avoid that coming out around her.]

[She's taken back a bit, and when she gathers herself she's frowning. When they reach the Rec Center she opens the door for him.]

Hey, this isn't her, your, or anybody's fault. I'm not saying you should do it again if you think you shouldn't. But it's not like everything's lost. It's not like she went home and forgot you completely.

[He heads inside the building and keeps walking so his back is to her.]

That's what you don't get, Winry. She did forget me completely. She still loves the Sokka 'core' maybe, but you're not looking at the guy she knows. It's been peaceful in her world. No more war, no more struggle, and no experiments. She's in love with a Sokka that hasn't changed, that hasn't... [Killed. Died. Done things he regrets...]

She might find out that I'm not the person she wants. Who could blame her for that?

[She closes the door behind them, but doesn't advance further into the building after that.]

Sokka, are you an idiot? Really? She loves you. Isn't that enough for you to get it? She loves you, so she'll understand. She'll understand that this place sucks, that this place throws things at you that you're not ready to handle.

[Winry runs up passed him to cut him off and poke him in the chest - just above the heart.]

But how are you supposed to help her understand when you're like this? When you're ready to give up and just let her go without even trying?
