Happy Happy Turkey Day

Summary: It's Thanksgiving. There's a meal and socializing. Also fun.
Rating: PG, PG-13 max? A kid got invited to this.
Considering how last minute all of this had been, Pepper was actually pretty satisfied with how things were turning out. Rogue had shown up early with helpers in tow, immediately setting to work in the kitchen. The house had been filled with delicious aromas shortly thereafter, and Pepper busied herself with the other details until guests started to arrive--at which point part of her job became keeping people out of the kitchen, per Rogue's orders.

The set up was straightforward: the dining room table was used to hold the assorted dishes, where people could fix themselves plates. A similar set up with drinks (although please, don't give alcohol to the children). Chairs set out for people to sit, since there were too many to even attempt a traditional sit down dinner. But that was fine by Pepper, who made her way through the group, making sure everyone was happy, or at least not destroying part of her house.

Better safe than sorry, with this crowd.

"Two years." He couldn't remember her birthday after more than a decade, but cereal at Thanksgiving? Oh, that definitely wasn't forgotten.

Needless to say, she wasn't pleased.

"Somehow I don't think they'll miss it. And I also don't think that Rogue, who is working very hard in our kitchen, would appreciate seeing it."

"Hey - she volunteered to cook in our kitchen. Something like this is a risk she assumed with that role." He tried to take the box of cereal out of her hands, then.

"A risk she assumed." Wow Tony. Wow. There really were no words.

Also? No way he was getting that box. Pepper held it to her chest and turned her front away from Tony. "Oh no. These are going back into the kitchen where they belong."

"Really? Because, personally, I think they go back on the table where they belong. We should give the people what they want."

They would want what Tony wants, of course.

"People implies there's more than just you." Nope, not buying it. Despite anything he might believe to the contrary, the world's culinary desires didn't revolve around Tony any more than the rest of it.

"They're going back into the kitchen." And Pepper started to walk away.

So he followed, not willing to give up on this yet. Or ever. He has surprisingly strong feelings about cereal at Thanksgiving. Or something.

"Clearly, there's an easy, democratic way to resolve this. We'll have a vote."

"A vote." Despite how long she's known him, Tony can still find ways to surprise her: specifically, the worst ways.

"You want to have a vote." It was worth saying again, because honestly, it was just that ridiculous. Pepper didn't stop, marching straight into the kitchen with the cereal kept safely in her arms.

"Yes. A simple poll of everyone in this house. How is that not fair? I'm just trying to be partial here. Let the people speak. Democracy in action."

Maybe he should have gone into politics. He continued to follow, intent on recovering that box.

Good luck with that, Tony. Especially considering that he'd be going into politics on his own; Pepper would quit before jumping into that mess with him. Even she had her limits.

But there were good things to be said about the democratic process. So Pepper stopped and turned to face her boyfriend/boss/source of frustration.

"Okay. Then we'll do that. You and I will go around to everyone here and ask if they want cereal at Thanksgiving. And until we've finished?"

Pepper opened the cabinet and lifted the box to shove it inside. "These stay here."

"Alright. You've got yourself a deal." He saw no way he could possibly lose, so why hold back? He was going to get cereal on that Thanksgiving table. Tradition, and all.

And if the vote didn't win out? He was not above sneaking them back out there. Or buying votes. He would do whatever it takes.

Yeah, Pepper had that suspicion. Which is why she was going to wait to follow him out of the kitchen. Otherwise he'd have a clear shot at the cabinet.

"Good. After you then."

Hmm. He'll have to get back to that later. At present...

"As you wish, Miss Potts." He turned back toward the dining room.

Luckily for Tony, he'd have plenty of opportunity; being a good host meant she couldn't guard the cereal cabinet.

She headed back out with him, favoring Tony with a grin now that they'd settled that matter.

"Having a good time so far?"

"You could say that." Which is as good as saying yes, he is. But that'd be too direct, wouldn't it? "And yourself?"

Of course. There are precious few things that Tony ever said directly, and those were usually reserved for when they were alone. Right now? Definitely not alone.

“I am.” Cereal debacle aside, and even Pepper had to admit (deep down) that it had been fun. It was a stupid argument like countless others they’d had before, and it was normal. Something other than Tony treating Pepper like she was delicate and fragile, which, don’t get her wrong, had been nice for a while. But this was pretty good too.

It was shockingly normal - it hadn't gone overlooked by him, either. And it was nice. Simpler than the mess things had been in recent weeks, but at least they had more or less returned to normal. He'd never been so okay with the concept of 'normal' before.

"Good. So - should we be taking bets on how long it is before something gets broken? I'm surprised we've lasted this long, to be honest."

“We might as well, now that you’ve practically guaranteed it’s going to happen.” Really Tony? Does pushing their luck just come naturally, or does it take effort on his part? Of course, Pepper had prepared for it by putting away most of the breakable things; with this crowd, it’d be pretty foolish not to.

“Maybe the real question isn’t when though. It could be a matter of who.” Especially as more people came in and indulged in food and alcohol alike. “So what are we betting, exactly? And no, putting out the cereal isn’t on the table, nor is it going to be.”

It's natural, of course. He has quite the habit of pushing things beyond where they should be pushed. It's not his fault, honest. He just has that affect on people!

"Who depends on if alcohol is involved." Because any of them would be more accident-prone if slightly intoxicated. "If you won't bet the cereal - which you should - maybe turkey carving rights, then."

It was completely Tony’s fault, and Pepper blamed him for it because he deserved it.

“What happened to your faith in the democratic process?” First Tony was willing to rely on the will of the people, and now he wanted to gamble. Seriously, sometimes he was hopeless. “Carving rights is good. Alcohol is unavoidable, but it doesn’t count if you’re the one that gets them drunk.” She was wise to his tricks. Pepper looked at Tony, silently questioning if he agreed to the terms.

"I just like to encourage the party-going atmosphere. It's a lot easier to do that when alcohol is involved."

“Oh please. You would absolutely get someone drunk to win a bet and you know it.” She raised an eyebrow at him, almost daring him to say she was wrong.

“I’m not saying alcohol can’t be involved. Just that you can’t be the one giving it to them. Or encouraging them to drink.”

He raised a defensive hand. "Fine, fine. But - I won't need that to win. Any or all of these bets."

“We’ll see.” Pepper wouldn’t be gambling with him if she didn’t think she had a chance, after all.

She looked around at the people already there, trying to decide just who seemed the most accident prone. “Do you have someone in mind already?”

"My money's on the big guy. Ben Grimm. He's just a smashed vase waiting to happen."

No offense, Ben.

Well, Tony probably wasn’t wrong. But would Ben be first?

“Kurt.” Pepper looked a little guilty when she said it, because it did feel a bit mean. “He’s very sweet, but he also seems awkward.”
