Happy Happy Turkey Day

Where: House 49
Summary: It's Thanksgiving. There's a meal and socializing. Also fun.
Rating: PG, PG-13 max? A kid got invited to this.
Considering how last minute all of this had been, Pepper was actually pretty satisfied with how things were turning out. Rogue had shown up early with helpers in tow, immediately setting to work in the kitchen. The house had been filled with delicious aromas shortly thereafter, and Pepper busied herself with the other details until guests started to arrive--at which point part of her job became keeping people out of the kitchen, per Rogue's orders.

The set up was straightforward: the dining room table was used to hold the assorted dishes, where people could fix themselves plates. A similar set up with drinks (although please, don't give alcohol to the children). Chairs set out for people to sit, since there were too many to even attempt a traditional sit down dinner. But that was fine by Pepper, who made her way through the group, making sure everyone was happy, or at least not destroying part of her house.

Better safe than sorry, with this crowd.

"Thank you. You should let Rogue know that too; she's the one responsible for a large part of the cooking." Whereas Pepper had the idea and put together the basic set up, she's pretty certain it wouldn't matter without a turkey, plus everything else Rogue had taken onto herself.

But the sentiment is shared, and Pepper glances around at the people talking to each other, and smiling. It's so much better than things were before, during and after the draft. "It really is."

"I'm glad it turned out so well. Seems like just the kind of thing that people needed." For reasons exactly like the draft. Even for people who hadn't gone, he's sure that the whole thing was just a mess for everyone to deal with. She seems so proud, though, and Jason can't help but feel happy for her. "I'm kinda surprised, to tell the truth. I didn't realize people would be so big on celebrating things like this here."

Were they? Pepper thought about the people who had come by, her eyes briefly moving to each, considering how each might celebrate the day back home—if they did at all.

“Maybe it’s because we’re here,” she said in a softer voice. Because they’d all been brought to Luceti and had things stripped away bit by bit, from freedom to memories to safety—in some cases even their lives. The draft had been devastating, by far the worst thing Pepper endured, but it was one entry in a growing list. Pepper had hers, bitter and still short, certainly when compared to people who had been there as long as Tony or Rogue. How much had they already lost? How much more would be taken before the end?

“It’s something we can still claim as ours.”

"That's a nice way to think about it." It wasn't a way that he'd looked at it before, but it was one he could relate to very easily. When you didn't have much, you clung to the few things you did have, the few things you could still call your own. "I guess that kind of makes celebrating them even more important. No one wants to let something like that go to waste."

“Exactly.”  She was glad Jason understood, and Pepper smiled to him.  “And we get opportunities out of it we might not expect—like meeting new people.”

"Well, I dunno about that, Pepper. I mean, there are so many people here, I think you'd have to be trying not to meet someone new."

He's just teasing, though, of course. He's met plenty of great people in Luceti that he's glad for, people he wouldn't have expected to meet when he first woke up here. Being smart is just part of his charm!
