Summary: After months of painstaking work, Tony and Jane are finally ready to test their machine. Things don't exactly go according to plan.

So here's how things are going to go down: This log will be split into three sub-threads. There will be preshow thread for everyone to tag into before things start to go down. Then, there will be a main thread for Tony, Jane, Loki and Billy for the actual portal testing and immediate results. Finally, there will be a postgame thread for anyone to tag into with their reactions.

A bit about the set-up in Tony’s workshop for you spatially-minded people: the portal itself will be near-center in the room, with all the other tables and equipment (including his armor) moved back against the walls. This will leave plenty of spectator space and clearance room for potential backfiring. But that surely won’t be a problem, because this is going to work, right? Of course right. Ahaha.

Pepper nodded slowly, knowing exactly what it means.  So many people put their efforts and their faith in this project, and they would see it rewarded or wasted within the hour.  “There’s a lot of people hoping for the best today.”  Which made the completion of the machine possible, yes, but also added a heavy burden on the shoulders of the scientists behind it.  Pepper’s gaze stopped when she came to Tony, who would certainly blame himself if things went wrong.  It was the flip side of his arrogance that made him shoulder so much, and her concern for him grew from more than physical safety.

"Only because we've seen what they're capable of." Ororo smiled, reaching out to squeeze Pepper's shoulder gently. "There's a lot of pressure on them, but they seem to be handling things quite well. Let's just hope for the best, shall we?"

[handing]

"Absolutely." Hoping is all Pepper can do, and even that isn't so reliable as she would like. But Ororo's touch is a comfort, and Pepper sighs as she reaches up to return the gesture, placing her hand on the other woman's.

"Thank you. I know a lot of people are skeptical about this." She'd seen it when Jane and Tony had made their announcement. Thankfully there are also people who believe it can be done as well.

Ororo paused, taking a moment to choose her next words carefully.

"You know they have every reason to be, Pepper. The Malnosso have proven themselves incredibly powerful, and far more experienced when it comes to the science of Shifting. Yet they've not found a proper way home." Ororo took a look around, at the collection of machinery and at the people busily looking them over. "It can be hard to be hopeful when one has been held here for so long. Or so many times."

"Or when it's an untested method that may not even be safe. Or when they come from worlds without technology. Or when they just don't know the minds behind this work." Pepper could go on, but instead she looked to the ground. "I know they have good reasons. But I've also seen the effort that's gone into this, and I have to believe it's going to work."

She gave Pepper's shoulder another supportive grip.

"I am not questioning you or saying it's wrong of you, my friend. I think it makes it all the more admirable, actually." And then, a smile. "And you would be surprised at how much difference a little faith can make."

Pepper sighs softly, turning her head to look over at Ororo. “You’re right, and I’m sorry. It’s just…” She lifts a hand to her face, brushing her fingers across her forehead. “I know they can do it. I know that. But I can’t stop thinking about what could happen if something goes wrong.” A possibility that looms, real and evident, minutes away as each member of the team checks and rechecks calculations and settings for the actual test.
