This post covers the first day, before the attack. Remember, characters here are not expecting an attack and are under the impression they will be going to Region 1 to fight. During this day, draftees will be restricted to T6 and T7 and not permitted access to other areas.

We know about the formation of Panem, the specialities of each district, the Dark Days, and the treaty that ended them. I guess the people in the Capitol figure we don't really need to know more.

[She perks up a little when he mentions the combat, thinking over it.]

Well, we learn unarmed combat, but we're usually taught not to rely on that in the Games. Just for emergencies. Broadswords, short swords, fighting knives, throwing knives, staffs, maces, axes, archery, spears. They sort of cycle through a lot of weapons when we just start, and then see what we have a knack for.

My primary weapons became my throwing knives, though I'm pretty decent with a mace and short sword.

My name's Clove. Been in the enclosure about a year.

"I'm not very good at it. At all." She smiles a little as she says it. Because, well, she's had to be so good at fighting for so long. Now, it feels natural to her. Learning something new -- something she can see, as opposed to learning how to live in this world -- makes her feel like she's starting to make progress. "But... yeah. I can show you sometime."

This man won't laugh at her. She still half thinks Cato would, if he really knew what she was doing. That he'd think it stupid and a waste of time. A wast of time they can't spend doing much else, but... "What's your hobby?"

It was a war. There were losses. Heavy ones, in numbers alone, and Shikamaru was leading a large portion of the army for most of that.

[It's still not time to dwell on it, the fact that each number is a name, each name is a person, and some of those people were friends or family. Chouji hasn't talked to anyone except Sakura about the more specific, personal losses. Even then, they danced around the subject, offering support without overt discussion. Shikamaru lost more than either of them.

Ah, yes. That old chestnut.

"I'm not sure hammers ever make sense. Not really my weapon of choice, to be honest. Seeing a troll come at you with one really ruins the charm."

Whoa...! That's...That's all, like, pretty different. So I guess you can only plan so much...you have to just take whatever comes at you.

[The not knowing is what scares her the most. The fact that they've only recently begun dealing with other enclosures on drafts makes her a little nervous as well, given what happened with the refugees before.

There's no way she can be completely prepared. She does her best to put on a smile, though it's an uneasy one.]

...I think maybe I should get back to studying over my first aid stuff again. J-Just to make sure I'm as ready as I can be. Um, Th-Thank you, Professor Sage.

Right, exactly that. It's the whole nature of an "experiment" after all, something that you observe and gather data from. It's probably easy to forget sometimes, while in the village...

[And yet, he never forgets. Paranoia taken to a whole new level here.]

[He tilts his head lightly and then, not quite sure how he should respond to that, but appreciating her show of loyalty-] I will fight. [But not for them. For his own advancement in this world] And will appreciate you fighting with me.

Oh, yeah. "Clove" is so much stranger than "Crow."

[Can you hear her rolling her eyes?]

Only if you're stupid and complacent. [Which, well. She doesn't have a high opinion of a lot of her fellow residents.]

So you were there? [ She tries to find the right words. ] Is there any other advice you'd recommend adding to my current collection?

Yeah, see? [Sorry, that went right over his head.] I mean, Crow is easy to remember because it's like the bird, and Clove is like...wait, what does that name mean anyway?

[shenevermisses]

I don't know. Why does it need to mean anything?

"I paint rocks," he says with a laugh. If there were ever anything that could be called a waste of time, that was it. He'd started it as a way to pass the time and remember his friends here, but now he did it as an actual hobby. He never did try to improve is art style, though. "It isn't about being good at it, so much as having fun, I suppose."

It's said almost as an aside, as though he doesn't intend for her to hear it - even though he says it loud enough to reach her ears. Souji nonchalantly stretches his arms up over his head, fingers brushing against the bunk above.

"Perhaps once this draft is over? If you have time?"

"I don't think I've ever seen a troll use something that sophisticated. You must have a smarter grade in your realm."

[shenevermisses]

"I'd like that a lot." She actually smiles. Almost more than that. She nearly beams. "You can make a game of it -- trying to guess what they're supposed to be."

She can laugh at herself in this company, can make fun of her lack of skill. Because, maybe... maybe like he says. Maybe it's not about being good. It's about having fun. Or just having something else to do. Something to take her mind off the past, present, and future. To isolate her thoughts to just that moment and that task.

[Because maybe she was denying things, or maybe it was a mallynap, or maybe-- it could have been anything.

But it wasn't. Saying it like that meant it wasn't anything.]

I wouldn't consider the village overall to be stupid... complacent, though, absolutely. It's pretty similar to the way people were back in my home world.

[Too accepting, not willing to look beyond the lies for the hidden truths.]

I dunno, I just thought that most names had a reason for them.

You're welcome. Is there anything in there you need help going over? I can take a few moments to help you study, if you'd like. [She does have other people helping make the deliveries, after all.]

Recommend? Hm. Staying with a group of at least two people or more. Make sure that you have enough food and supplies in case you're away from the main camp for more than a few hours or-or even days. A-And make sure to not rely too heavily on-on one specific form of fighting.
