[When she's grabbed, Rei squeaks in fright and drops her basket in the street. She tries to struggle a bit but she just can't. He's a lot bigger and a lot stronger than her and she wasn't really ready to fight back. Thrashing and squirming does no good, so she just goes limp, waiting to see what whoever it was would do.

And her eyes widen when she recognizes Cliff's voice. And what he's asking. She nods slowly, wondering what he had in mind. And if he meant to hurt her.]

[The single nod was enough of an answer for him. Cliff released her and took a few steps back, hands held out in the open just in case she tried to retaliate. This wasn't a pretty picture, and there was no way to make an excuse for it.]

Listen. I'm not gonna hurt you or anything-- I swear it. I'm just trying to keep you safe from that weirdo. You know him. I've had a bad feeling about that smile for a long time...

We'll talk on the way if you want to come. I'm not gonna force you or anything, but that guy ain't easy to deal with.

I'll keep you safe if you stick close. Don't doubt that. It'd really bug me if something happened to you.

Cliff-san.

[She seems more surprised that it's you doing it anyway]

I...don't think he'll hurt me, not really. He's really very sweet. Just...strange.

But why would it bother you? [Her eyes narrow...]

[He watched her carefully, his own eyes hiding something that was more complicated than what he wanted to discuss immediately.]

So. You don't think it's strange that he's been tailing your every move for the last three days?

[It was an honest question.]

He gets crazy when he's got something in his head. Doesn't always think right. It can be dangerous.

Rei...uh. You're not someone I want to see get hurt.

It is...but sometimes people do that. I don't think he means to hurt me, at least.

[Shaking her head she raises an eyebrow]

Why is that?

[He watched her for a long moment before he replied.]

...You remind me a little of someone very special back home.

O-oh?

[That makes her a little nervous...]

Yea. She's not much older than you. Calm, kind, but much more stern.

...I'm kinda sorry that she couldn't grow up like a normal Earthling girl. Living on the road's a little too messy for that.

[faithfulflame]

Well, I'm glad you think I'm kind. But...why did you grab me like that? You could've hurt me...

[He smiled at that.]

Nah. That wouldn't have happened. I know how to be careful. I just needed to be discreet is all-- can't let him see me.

[faithfulflame]

A message over the journals wasn't sufficient?

[Her fists find her hips and she manages a glower.]

No!

[He spoke a little too fast, as if he were indeed guilty of something. Cliff looked away and scratched his head as he sought out an explanation.]

I, uh, got into a little mess a day or so back because the filters are whack. The message went to a completely different person, so I don't think we can trust 'em right now.

Um, you could send it discreetly? In code or something.

[Still glowering]
