Tea shop it is, then. When they get there, Derek will pull out all the stops on every bit of etiquette pounded into his brain, which is actually quite a lot, including holding open doors, offering his arm, holding the chair out for her, etc.

He won't sit until he's sure she's comfortable first.

She is suitably impressed, of course, and takes a seat, setting nervously but quickly so he can sit too.

It doesn't take long for him to settle in. He's still smiling at her.

Of course, he's failing at conversation right now, but who cares. The scenery is great (that would be you, Saori).

And she, for her part settles somewhat nervously, shifting and fidgeting under his occasional glances. She sits until the hot chocolate arrives, smiling down at the table. When she finally does speak, it's muffled into the cup.

"I...think you're v-very handsome, Derek." She squeaks a little at her own boldness. Despite what he says, she still doesn't think she's pretty. But arguing she won't do. "H-have I e-ever told you that?"

He looks genuinely surprised at that.

"No, you haven't. But thank you." He sips his own hot chocolate, looking thoughtful.

"You know, your music? I think more people should hear it."

[windandrain]

"Do you?" She sounds positively delighted at the idea. For such a worm, she was extraordinarily proud of her music. It was the one thing she could be sure she wasn't doing wrong.

"Do you really?!"

[rather_be_surfing]

"Yeah, I do. I love hearing you. I think other people would enjoy it too. You should try it."

[windandrain]

"I...I mean to. When Eugene and Jack get their radio-show started. It's...the only thing I can really do right."

[rather_be_surfing]

"Pretty sure you can do more than that right. But it will be good to hear you if you do that."

[windandrain]

"W-well...if it wouldn't be too bold. Could we do a...duet?"

[rather_be_surfing]

"I...what?" he looks genuinely surprised, "Yeah, I guess we could do a duet. It would be cool."

[windandrain]

"I...if you don't want to..." His surprise shakes her a bit.

[rather_be_surfing]

"No! I do. I...well, the whole point is to let everyone hear your voice, right?

I've love singing with you, though."

[windandrain]

"T-then soon." She nods tremulously. "If that's alright with you. I...I don't want to be t-to forward."

[rather_be_surfing]

"soon," he agrees, "And don't worry, it'll be an honor."

[windandrain]

"G-good. B-but...an honor?" Surely not. She's a good singer, but...

[rather_be_surfing]

"A honor." He says that quietly and firmly.

[windandrain]

It's the certainty in his voice that makes it's mark on her, emboldening her. She can't help it. She just reaches out and takes his hand and pulls him towards her. There's always that risk with these moe types. Compliment them too much and they'll start acting like this.

Without thinking, she kisses him again, this time full on the lips. It's almost as though the writers are trying to tell her that she isn't really moe at all, but pretend-moe.

Well, he'd be lying if he said he wasn't surprised. But then, the writers aren't exactly interested in that emotion either at the moment. So after the slightest hesitation, he'll return the kiss. Not bland, but not overly aggressive, either. There's still some sort of stopgap in there. Somewhere. Maybe.

[windandrain]

After a long moment she pulls back, blushing and looking away.

"I...I...I'm sorry...I s-s-shouldn't..."

[rather_be_surfing]

He draws back too, looking a bit startled himself.

"Uh...yeah. I..." What the hell.

[windandrain]

"That was my f-fault. I s-shouldn't. You...I...it...ohhhh Earth and Stars!" she all but wails. "I...you...didn't deserve that. I'll only bring t-t-trouble...and I'm not worth it."

[rather_be_surfing]

"Hey, wait," he'll reach out over the table and take her by the shoulders, "It takes two to tango, you know? This isn't all your fault. Quit saying it is."

He's not sure who's fault it is, but it's not hers. He could've, you know, backed off himself.

"And damn it, you would be worth it! I dunno who told you you wouldn't be, but they're dead wrong."

[windandrain]

Being grabbed suddenly strikes a spark in her, and she blinks. She would be worth it? She...wasn't sure how. But he was right. He did kiss her back.

"I...I have a b-b-boyfriend." She manages not to splutter but she does stammer. "I don't...I don't know how he puts up with me, b-but...I've done something foolish, haven't I?"

Boyfriend?

Aw hell.

"...I'm sorry. I dunno about foolish, but it might tick him off if he finds out..."

C'mon, Derek. You're in a soap opera, you KNOW someone will have seen this little exchange...
