Summary: Volunteers are sent to check in one the Iron Eye, a group of mercenaries who have convened in the desert for unknown reasons.
Rating: J for Just Deserts

Departure

As you may recall from the mission briefing, selected volunteers are headed to the desert in Region Nine. Before the nitty-gritty mechanics of this mission are revealed, characters must first try and gather as much intelligence as possible from the NPCs made available to them. The nature of their presence in the desert, the context of the vote you will have to make, as well as the larger picture concerning the existence of the Iron Eye all depend upon solid investigation and shrewd interrogation. Or, perhaps, dumb luck.

Diplomat/Negotiator characters will be permitted to tag as many NPCs as the player wishes. All other characters will have to choose just one of the NPCs to tag -- choose wisely! You’re likely still going to uncover some sort of intel. (Do note, each NPC is played by a different mod. So if you see one NPC getting more hits than the other, consider hitting up a different one to help spread it out.)

Investigator characters will have a thread purpose-built to allow those players in particular to ask the mods particular (and pointed) questions about what can be observed. Please note that these questions should be direct and specific rather than vague. For example, ’are any of the Iron Eye members looking particularly upset?’ is a valid question. What is the group’s general mood?’ is not. Remember, these inquiries aren’t going to be done out of character. There will be an In Character thread to reply to, meaning that any move you commit to has consequences and could draw attention to your character. So be careful!

Doctor characters will not only look after their own, but they’ll get a chance to help the Iron Eye deal with their own wounded. Without any special powers, they’ll have to rely on good old fashioned know how. However, there may be some insight to be found in just what ails these mercenaries.

Quartermaster characters are primarily responsible for their own - other volunteers. The trucks they arrived on should be packed with necessary supplies to keep them healthy, but they may have to borrow from the MSF if any of the group turns out to be thirstier than the Malnosso anticipated.

Guard characters have the unenviable position of guarding the small convoy the volunteers arrived in, while also facing extra scrutiny from the Iron Eye. However, even with all the mercenaries around, there’s still things out in the desert to worry about. Lone Shift Hunters often hunt at night, where their dark skin and silent steps can make them incredibly stealthy, especially without special powers to aid in anticipating them.

The camp they’ll be heading to is large and staffed by the Iron Eye. They are at least five thousand strong with men and have their own supply of trucks, jeeps, tanks, and even a few helicopters. Although not nearly so uniform as the MSF, it’s clear that this is a group that means business. Their numbers are composed of men and women of many species, some with large wings and some with small. Throughout the mission, they’ll have their own people coming and going from different directions. Beyond their camp is all desert where brutal Shifts make powers unreliable and have been known to have sometimes lethal effects. Although the Iron Eye camp has set up a small amount of protection against these Shifts, it’s nowhere near as secure as what you’d find in a proper enclosure.

Playing in this mission means you guys have to figure out exactly what the Iron Eye are up to. On the tenth, a post will appear on [community profile] lucetiooc for you to vote on whether your character will assist the Iron Eye or sabotage their efforts, regardless if they are fully aware of what they’re up to. Or they can, of course, just do nothing and not vote.

--

The volunteers were transported to the outskirts of the desert courtesy of a cargo plane. Given the variety of participants, the pilot would only feel secure after turning the power cap on to one hundred percent, even though his co-pilot insisted they had nothing to worry about. After all, he said, Lucetians almost never try to escape. All the same, power cap it was, and the long flight set in. When they landed at the airstrip in Region Nine, it was revealed to be little more than just that. A paved area to land, a few buildings, and then a caravan of trucks that were to be handed over to the volunteers to make use of.

Several miles into the trip, it became obvious when they arrived in Iron Eye territory. Scouts from the mercenary crew spotted them even miles before they had arrived and cautiously followed them into the encampment. The soldiers greeted them with suspicion and weapons raised, but called off their attack. After all, the leader of this particular outfit was already well-acquainted with these new arrivals. Hoi Hidekan had dealt with them before now. Many of the other members of the Iron Eye likewise recognized Lucetians. Many of them weren’t so happy to see familiar faces, having been slain by Lucetians in the battle at Depot 8. Hidekan himself was on edge. He didn’t like where this seemed to be going, but it was with gritted teeth he allowed the Lucetians entered. Immediately, he assigned a guard to watch over them. He watched Trafalgar Law carefully in particular, but said nothing. For the moment, at least.

It wasn’t until a particularly jovial and blue man arrived that things eased up. Sir Catherine, known to the organization as Bilirubin, wore a wide grin as he came to meet the Lucetians. He greeted them warmly despite the situation.

“Ah, what are the chances of meeting out here in this place? I do hope the organization hasn’t sent you out here to arrest me. I imagine by now you may have heard about that eensy problem I ran into regarding my little plan to eliminate Count Zompano. Ahaha, well, I think we can all agree that absolutely went dreadfully. Who would have thought he’d join up with the cultists? In any case, I’m afraid I won’t let you do that. I’ve hired the Iron Eye, you see. I shan’t be turned over to the organization. Not when there’s work to do. In any case, I look forward to speaking to you all individually. Please, relax! Pitch a tent. Have some of our water. Enjoy the sights. The nights are rather bland, given the lack of stars, but the sand dunes to the west are rather splendid to look at once you’re good and properly dehydrated. In any case, off I go!”

And just like, Bilirubin popped back into one of the tents, but he’d be out and about again before long. Hidekan was less pleased and followed the blue man, leaving the Lucetians to figure out how they were going to make do for the next four days. Sticking close to Hidekan was a young woman, another former member of the MSF. But only one of the group would recognize her as Aka Furuka. After all, Gai had been involved in the same mission that involved putting a stop to her and the people she was working with. It was clear that she didn’t relish the idea of being recognized. Nobody would. The incident at the hospital was messy business.

With that settled, the volunteers were left to set up camp, figure out their supplies, and make themselves ready to investigate the surroundings, deal with any creatures that bump in the night, and tend to any other difficulties that would arise in their four days.

She nodded. "I can understand that. I'm sure that with all the work you do for everyone, you must not get much time to yourself otherwise."

"I suppose that would be quite the motivation." Aaah... still busy, then. Still, he couldn't take back his approach now, and the constant stream of numbers has him curious.

"Though even for that, you do seem to be keeping quite busy. I don't think I've seen you stop moving since we arrived."

At some point, Ororo walks over to where Eley sits. She holds out a canteen to him, smiling kindly.

"It's important to keep yourself hydrated out here."

Captain. [ Ororo raises a hand in greeting. They hadn't spoken much since they'd arrived, but she's made it a point to seek him out when she has a moment of free time. ]

"... he wanted something better for us."

A pause.

"... you see, talk was that the Moon Draft was the final straw. He was tired of seeing enclosure residents slaughtered, so... the Foreman turned his back on them. So he joined the FTSA. He arrived in Depot 8 a few months before. Passing out pamphlets, sermonizing outside the saloon. Harmless stuff mostly at first. Then there were threats.

... ultimately it lead to a strike on the Depot itself. Mister Hidekan was going to plant explosives in the heart of the underground factory there. You see, that factory supplies water, food, and supplies to two enclosures in the desert there: O'Connell and Pagoda. The same Pagoda you hear in the talk around this camp. Cutting them off meant starvation. The Sheriff there believed it... Hoi did not. He believed the Malnosso would rescue the inhabitants, move them to different enclosures, and the whole incident would be a rallying point for the cause."

Another pause. A distant stare across the sand.

"We refused to let him take the risk. We all stood with the Depot. Many of us tried to talk him out of it... I've lost count how many attempted it, but no good. He's a man of convictions and extremes - a good man, an honourable man, yes - but once he gets it in his head that it's the right, just thing to do..."

... Law turns his head very slightly.

"You can imagine the rest. Good intentions pave the road to hell. So there's a river of bad blood, I reckon. Between him, them... and us."

"If you insist." The ninja bowed his head once in acquiescence. "I wouldn't wish to do anything to compromise said security."

And he did back away, arms still held up, not lowering them until he had turned his back to her some distance away. As little as he'd found out, it hadn't been a wasted effort. Given their situation, there was nothing wrong with them being paranoid about the volunteers finding out too much about their true intentions. Nevertheless, he had found an area worth looking into. It was simply a matter of finding out how to look into it.

For the time being, he returned to his tent with a bottle of water. He could go to the clinic and relate what he'd found to Law right away, but if he was caught immediately ducking in there after being run off by the guard that could look even more suspicious. Risking an attempt at creating a clone resulted in nothing happening at all, and he supposed he should be grateful that the results hadn't been worse. His abilities would be completely unreliable for this, so he'd have to do without.

For the next while, he busied himself with helping move supplies around the camp, handing out water when it was needed. All the while, he listened. He located some of the security and kept track of them on their break. No one important. Breaking into the tent of someone who'd have their own guards would prove too difficult to do during the day without his abilities, but getting into one belonging to someone one a slightly lower rung might prove a little easier. It was doubtful that he'd find anything nearly as important, but he couldn't pass over the opportunity either.

He made his move after most of those in the nearby vicinity had (whether pleased with it or not) gotten used to his presence there. Waiting until he knew the tent was empty, and for just enough of a crowd to be passing through the area so that he could lose himself in it should anyone be actively tracking his movements, the ninja ducked inside the tent of one of the security officers.

"Eh? Bigger than a scorpion? What do you think we'll be facing out here? Not the Third Party way out here, right? Because if they are, I say they can have this dusty place and have fun building sand castles if they'll leave us alone!"

It's said more as a joke then what he really thinks. Still it would be awfully nice if wars could be won that easily.

"Or do you just mean really big spiders? Really big spiders I can handle."

Eley looks up as someone approaches. Ah yes, this was someone he had spoken to on that 'speed dating' event, wasn't it? He's glad to see a familiar face out here in these harsh and unfamiliar surroundings, but still he seems reluctant to take that canteen despite the heat beginning to take its toll on his body. He had never really known thirst or dehydration before... so he didn't quite understand how serious it could be. Besides, he still had the mind of a Spirit. He would survive fine enough, wouldn't he?

"There are others who will need it more than me. Please, go to them first."

Vash listens as he opens boxes and double checks that the supplies they were given were all there and in order. Organizing things as he felt would wind up being the most useful to them.

"Yeah, I can see why he didn't look too happy to see you then." Vash sighs and straightens up. Deciding he was happy with their current set up with the supplies. "I suppose it's something, wanting better for us, but agreed. Good intentions can pave a very fast road to hell. Let's hope he's had a bit of change to his thinking."

During the days they are treating the wounded, Ino comes up to Law after bandaging the arm of one soldier. She wipes away the sweat that settled on her brow with the back of her hand, convinced that their mission can go on forever. It's a little odd, though, to rely merely on her knowledge of first aid not use any medical ninjutsu. At least, she can save her strength.

"How are you holding up?" She asks with a small smile, handing him a small cup of water. It's good to have a little break, at least before more wounded soldiers rush in.
floralogy: (you know you want this)

[personal profile] floralogy 2013-09-10 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Ino didn't like the plane ride in particular either, but she can at least charge it to experience. When they arrived in the camp, she made a mental note to see how Chouji's doing. It really didn't take her long to know where he is given the task he was assigned to do.

"Hey," Ino begins with a smile. "Guess it's just the two of us from Konoha then."
floralogy: (you know you want this)

[personal profile] floralogy 2013-09-10 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
It's only a basic ninja skill to know when you're being watched or not, so it doesn't take long for Ino to realize there are eyes on her. She would have joked if they belonged to a man, tossed a playful line or two, and be done with it. But she's surprised to discern that their owner is actually female.

After setting up some of her stuff (mostly medical supplies), Ino decided to approach the girl with a smile. Well, she had always been good with people and meeting them so she might as well strike some conversation. A little investigation in the guise of a friendly chit chat won't hurt.

"Hey there," A small, affable wave as a greeting. "My name's Ino. What's yours?"
16autumnroad: (grin)

[personal profile] 16autumnroad 2013-09-10 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Her smile is answered with one of his own. Chouji always has one of those for Ino. "Yeah, unless Itachi counts. And Suna has a representative, since I saw Temari. You're here as a medic?"

Ino's been here a long time. Considering his own concerns about fighting without use of chakra, he's willing to bet that his teammate put some time into medical techniques that aren't jutsu at all. The bo strapped to Chouji's back is proof enough that he's been expanding his fighting style, borrowing a bit of his father's.

There's something comforting about a mission with one of his teammates, a sense of home that's disconcerting in such an unfamiliar location.
16autumnroad: (surprised)

[personal profile] 16autumnroad 2013-09-10 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
[While making a quick round of the camp to check in with everyone he's supposed to be looking after, Chouji catches sight of one of the guards faltering slightly. It isn't obvious at first glance, but once he takes a closer look, it's clear that the heat is affecting her.

He catches her eye and waves before coming closer, no desire to approach a guard unannounced. Chouji didn't catch her name earlier, but he did make sure he'd recognize others from Luceti on sight.]

Hey! I'm Chouji, one of the people in charge of supplies for the mission. Are you doing alright?

[He offers a smile of his own, immediate and firm, but then frowns in concern.]

I'm not doing too well with the heat either. I've at least had the luxury of hiding in the shade for awhile rather than patrolling. [The bo strapped to his back and weapons pouches on his legs probably hint that he's familiar with guarding, even if that isn't what he's doing on this particular mission. Chouji's armor and vest have been temporarily laid aside in deference to the heat, to be put on again at any sign of trouble. He glances back in the direction he came.]

Water's rationed, of course, but not so strictly that anyone should be dizzy from lack of it. [Yes, this is an offer to bring you some.]

Her eyebrows knitted together as she leaned in slightly with interest. Sending everyone to their worlds for a single day was something she'd have to ask Mulder about, since she assumed he had been a part of this from being in Luceti for so long, but the other mention... the "Iron Eye," Marita wasn't so sure what that was.

Nor was she sure why or how it had taken part of it all. Her time was limited and she figured asking the questions she needed was easier than filling in the rest of the silence with small talk.

"The Iron Eye...? What's that?"

[personal profile] malnosso 2013-09-10 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
The soldier looked unhappy about this. The last thing he wanted to do was be caught gabbing when there was other things to do. So he pulled out his gun and took the time to pretend inspecting it, like there was something wrong with it.

"Lots of people know about the Iron Eye. You find them and if they think you're worth it, they'll let you tag along. Our commander pays us for what we're worth to the group. But even if we go down or get injured, we look after our own. To a point."

[personal profile] malnosso 2013-09-10 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
To his credit, he succeeded in that much. The tent belonged to Jon Tarvus, a man of unusually short stature. A dwarf, perhaps. His belongings seemed to reflect that. Sitting on a small rack was not only a rifle, but a ceremonial ax as well. He used only a sleeping bag for sleeping, but 'subtle' signs suggested he wasn't often in the habit of using it alone. But that was unimportant.

What was important was the presence of a laptop case. Inside of it was, of course, the computer in question. A few other folders were stuffed inside it as well.

He shook his head at her. "Mercenaries, my dear. The very people we are camped with. Though, I suppose you might mean where did they get the name? That I am not so sure. I suppose they like to think that they're watchers. Their eyes are iron, because they never close. They watch the places where stone and wood would waste away. Though I'm sure that's a more poetic take on it than what they had in mind."

Luke followed the soldier's lead, inspecting the pistol he'd taken with him, just to make it look like they were working on something together.

"Pays? What with? I mean, I get that it's money of some sort. But what do the different factions out here use as currency? Gold? Gems? Printed coinage?"
