Mission #14 - The Iron Eye
Who:
Doctors: Yamanaka Ino, Trafalgar Law, Elizabeth (Bioshock)
Investigators: Luke Skywalker, Natasha Romanoff, Asch, Itachi Uchiha, Maron Kusukabe, Selphie Tilmitt
Diplomats: Freyjadour Falenas, Marita Covarrubias, Gai Tsutsugami, Jade Curtiss, Ororo Munroe, Temari, Peggy Carter
Quartermasters: Haruhi Suzumiya, Akimichi Chouji, Eleytheria, Rudy Roughnight, Vash, Elizabeth (Persona)
Guards: Clove, Karla, Vegeta, Suki, Steve Rogers, Yuffie Kisaragi
What: Mission #14: The Iron Eye
When: September 7th - September 11th
Where: The Desert of Region Nine
Summary: Volunteers are sent to check in one the Iron Eye, a group of mercenaries who have convened in the desert for unknown reasons.
Rating: J for Just Deserts
Departure
As you may recall from the mission briefing, selected volunteers are headed to the desert in Region Nine. Before the nitty-gritty mechanics of this mission are revealed, characters must first try and gather as much intelligence as possible from the NPCs made available to them. The nature of their presence in the desert, the context of the vote you will have to make, as well as the larger picture concerning the existence of the Iron Eye all depend upon solid investigation and shrewd interrogation. Or, perhaps, dumb luck.
Diplomat/Negotiator characters will be permitted to tag as many NPCs as the player wishes. All other characters will have to choose just one of the NPCs to tag -- choose wisely! You’re likely still going to uncover some sort of intel. (Do note, each NPC is played by a different mod. So if you see one NPC getting more hits than the other, consider hitting up a different one to help spread it out.)
Investigator characters will have a thread purpose-built to allow those players in particular to ask the mods particular (and pointed) questions about what can be observed. Please note that these questions should be direct and specific rather than vague. For example, ’are any of the Iron Eye members looking particularly upset?’ is a valid question. What is the group’s general mood?’ is not. Remember, these inquiries aren’t going to be done out of character. There will be an In Character thread to reply to, meaning that any move you commit to has consequences and could draw attention to your character. So be careful!
Doctor characters will not only look after their own, but they’ll get a chance to help the Iron Eye deal with their own wounded. Without any special powers, they’ll have to rely on good old fashioned know how. However, there may be some insight to be found in just what ails these mercenaries.
Quartermaster characters are primarily responsible for their own - other volunteers. The trucks they arrived on should be packed with necessary supplies to keep them healthy, but they may have to borrow from the MSF if any of the group turns out to be thirstier than the Malnosso anticipated.
Guard characters have the unenviable position of guarding the small convoy the volunteers arrived in, while also facing extra scrutiny from the Iron Eye. However, even with all the mercenaries around, there’s still things out in the desert to worry about. Lone Shift Hunters often hunt at night, where their dark skin and silent steps can make them incredibly stealthy, especially without special powers to aid in anticipating them.
The camp they’ll be heading to is large and staffed by the Iron Eye. They are at least five thousand strong with men and have their own supply of trucks, jeeps, tanks, and even a few helicopters. Although not nearly so uniform as the MSF, it’s clear that this is a group that means business. Their numbers are composed of men and women of many species, some with large wings and some with small. Throughout the mission, they’ll have their own people coming and going from different directions. Beyond their camp is all desert where brutal Shifts make powers unreliable and have been known to have sometimes lethal effects. Although the Iron Eye camp has set up a small amount of protection against these Shifts, it’s nowhere near as secure as what you’d find in a proper enclosure.
Playing in this mission means you guys have to figure out exactly what the Iron Eye are up to. On the tenth, a post will appear on
lucetiooc for you to vote on whether your character will assist the Iron Eye or sabotage their efforts, regardless if they are fully aware of what they’re up to. Or they can, of course, just do nothing and not vote.

The volunteers were transported to the outskirts of the desert courtesy of a cargo plane. Given the variety of participants, the pilot would only feel secure after turning the power cap on to one hundred percent, even though his co-pilot insisted they had nothing to worry about. After all, he said, Lucetians almost never try to escape. All the same, power cap it was, and the long flight set in. When they landed at the airstrip in Region Nine, it was revealed to be little more than just that. A paved area to land, a few buildings, and then a caravan of trucks that were to be handed over to the volunteers to make use of.
Several miles into the trip, it became obvious when they arrived in Iron Eye territory. Scouts from the mercenary crew spotted them even miles before they had arrived and cautiously followed them into the encampment. The soldiers greeted them with suspicion and weapons raised, but called off their attack. After all, the leader of this particular outfit was already well-acquainted with these new arrivals. Hoi Hidekan had dealt with them before now. Many of the other members of the Iron Eye likewise recognized Lucetians. Many of them weren’t so happy to see familiar faces, having been slain by Lucetians in the battle at Depot 8. Hidekan himself was on edge. He didn’t like where this seemed to be going, but it was with gritted teeth he allowed the Lucetians entered. Immediately, he assigned a guard to watch over them. He watched Trafalgar Law carefully in particular, but said nothing. For the moment, at least.
It wasn’t until a particularly jovial and blue man arrived that things eased up. Sir Catherine, known to the organization as Bilirubin, wore a wide grin as he came to meet the Lucetians. He greeted them warmly despite the situation.
“Ah, what are the chances of meeting out here in this place? I do hope the organization hasn’t sent you out here to arrest me. I imagine by now you may have heard about that eensy problem I ran into regarding my little plan to eliminate Count Zompano. Ahaha, well, I think we can all agree that absolutely went dreadfully. Who would have thought he’d join up with the cultists? In any case, I’m afraid I won’t let you do that. I’ve hired the Iron Eye, you see. I shan’t be turned over to the organization. Not when there’s work to do. In any case, I look forward to speaking to you all individually. Please, relax! Pitch a tent. Have some of our water. Enjoy the sights. The nights are rather bland, given the lack of stars, but the sand dunes to the west are rather splendid to look at once you’re good and properly dehydrated. In any case, off I go!”
And just like, Bilirubin popped back into one of the tents, but he’d be out and about again before long. Hidekan was less pleased and followed the blue man, leaving the Lucetians to figure out how they were going to make do for the next four days. Sticking close to Hidekan was a young woman, another former member of the MSF. But only one of the group would recognize her as Aka Furuka. After all, Gai had been involved in the same mission that involved putting a stop to her and the people she was working with. It was clear that she didn’t relish the idea of being recognized. Nobody would. The incident at the hospital was messy business.
With that settled, the volunteers were left to set up camp, figure out their supplies, and make themselves ready to investigate the surroundings, deal with any creatures that bump in the night, and tend to any other difficulties that would arise in their four days.

Being an informant was simpler when she easily had the information underneath the palm of her hand. Now, she was in Mulder's position: always seeking the truth.
Turning back to look at him and said, "Maybe they're just as curious as to why Zompano's joined the cultists, as well... I'm to assume they are their own faction then? Against the Malnosso?"
America and Russia, Luceti and the Malnosso. She supposed things were not all that different even in another universe.

"They're a neutral party, similar to peacekeepers, then? I assume that's why they're tolerating us being here at best."
The name — Hidekan — did not sound familiar to her. She almost didn't ask, as there was no way to keep all of this information on hand to look back upon. Her short term memory hadn't been the best after being subject to experiments, even more so served by being thrown into an asylum. Regardless, she tried her best to navigate through it and find something she could hold onto.
"I'm not familiar with Mr. Hidekan or his actions... what exactly did he do?"

She hoped she meant giving her name would somehow signify that they would eventually meet again and this time, with more information on both sides, rather than just his.

It was like she was a frightened child, but instead of a monster underneath the bed, the Cancer Man would walk up right behind them and remind her of what happened the last time she prodded too far.
"I'm sorry," she said, with her voice full of sincerity, though her expression still remained neutral. "You're right. I've been... out of commission for a little while, that I briefly forget how things work."
As if the slight blunder had not existed at all, she moved on with her questioning. "If the Iron Eye isn't necessarily a malevolent force like the cultists and Zompano, then why should we come out here at all? Should we be looking for whatever they're working on?"
no subject
"The Malnosso like to have their hands in everything, my dear. If something is going on and they don't know what it is, they have a pressing urge to find out. I suppose you can say that's what's to be expected of an organization founded by science. But just as often, they simply want to be told things are perfectly fine and that there is nothing for them to be concerned about."
no subject
"I'd ask you if there is something out here worth looking for, but I suppose we'd have a better chance finding that out ourselves. But... if we do find something, what are the chances the Iron Eye won't turn on us when we do? The Malnosso is known to have many enemies, it seems."
no subject
"Regardless, I would advice you not snoop around. It would be better you found nothing and returned to say as such."
no subject
Her voice does not hold any malice toward Bil's suggestions; she's heard it before, years prior, and there was something behind that. Far greater than she could imagine, far greater than what she gained for obtaining it. Regardless, Marita edged toward the first refusal to back down as a means to test the waters.
"If we're already here, we may as well try to obtain as much information as we possibly can."
no subject
no subject
She turned to look at him, unmarred. "I've found that information doesn't come easily if you're not familiar with more of the history."
It was how she could handle Russia so well, how she could keep her cold distance from Mulder, but in Luceti... she was more in the dark there than she had been those two years at Fort Marlene.
no subject
"But you seem a smart and intelligent woman, despite what little you've been told by your comrades. I think it only fair I give you a bit of an edge over them, hm? I'll make a deal with you. Give me a few strands of your hair and I shall answer one question as honestly as I can. Mind you, I may ask you to choose a different question instead, but I shan't cheat you with a poor answer." A pause and then he looked back at the camp. "Of course, I can't very well tell you what we're truly doing here. So I shall rule that one out right away."
no subject
It felt like some strange mythological fairy tale, but she wasn't sure what role she played in it (if she played a role at all). It wasn't the strangest negotiation she had run into, but it closely followed behind.
"I'd like to take a minute to think about my question."
no subject
"Of course, my dear. Take as long as you like."
no subject
Shielding her eyes with her hand, she looked out to the horizon, questioning what would be the best course of action. The Iron Eye were obviously an important part of all of this, but what could she ask that wasn't compromising what they would do that Bil had warned her about that sort of conversation he would not answer.
This all had to do with the previous incident, she guessed, but there were so many patches in her own understanding that she could barely confirm what exactly it was. She swallowed, realizing how dry her throat was.
It was like dealing with the Syndicate all over again. What had she learned from them? What sort of questions had she asked that obtained answers she could receive? She had been so clueless about Luceti's history that the only access she had was Mulder's X-Files. Even then, those only revealed the nature of the Shifts, not the history itself.
With a sigh, Marita let her hand fall to her side and she turned back to where Bil was contently settled. She trudged past the previous path she made.
"Earlier, you said that the Iron Eye only targeted cultists and enemies against the organization... and considering the recent events, I have a feeling there's more meaning to that for a faction that's considered to be autonomous." She paused, mulling over the question one last time. "What's the Iron Eye's current agenda toward the cultists?"
no subject
But when she returned and asked her question, he seemed mildly disappointed.
"Well then, I'll thank you at least for something easy. Their agenda is simple. Completely extermination. The Iron Eye split off from the MSF some time ago after we lost The Hero. The war was going badly and some wanted to use more extreme measures to fight the cultists, others wanted to follow the old code. And so, the Iron Eye broke off and became their own company of fighters. They took the fight to the cultists and did not bother defending cities and enclosures, but instead diving deep into the territory of the cultists to strike."
He offered a small shrug. "Of course, they weren't part of the Malnosso. You can't survive just off a crusade of your own. So they took other jobs. Sometimes from the Malnosso, sometimes from... other interests. They've even been known to challenge the organization, if the money is good enough. But by and large, I suppose both realize the other is valuable to each other. It would be a waste for either to be eliminated."
no subject
After all, she was a diplomat, not an agent of the FBI, a sleuthing double agent, or an interrogator.
"Thank you," she said, with genuine interest figuring she should elaborate more on why she asked that certain question. "I asked because I'm interested in the relations between factions and what it means for us. Back in my world, I was a diplomat for Russian-American relations... though, I'm sure those two names don't mean much for you. I figure that remaining here means I should learn to at least pursue the similar interest of diplomacy."
She turned to look at the camp, wondering why exactly she was relaying so much to him. "I'm not sure how I entirely feel about the cultists yet, but I don't think extermination accounts for anything. One person can't change an entire factions reasoning... but I suppose I hope that people would understand humanity holds a greater importance than war."
no subject
"I agree entirely. In any case, exterminating them is not my goal. My goals go beyond an unending war and even if we were to exterminate them all, it would not solve the larger dilemma of this world. But if we can stop them, even if just for a time, then that victory is worth it. We are close, my dear. So tantalizingly close to everything, but even as success is within our grasp, the cultists threaten to undo everything. And that is why we must act."
no subject
"Act how?"
no subject
