Summary: Volunteers are sent to check in one the Iron Eye, a group of mercenaries who have convened in the desert for unknown reasons.
Rating: J for Just Deserts

Departure

As you may recall from the mission briefing, selected volunteers are headed to the desert in Region Nine. Before the nitty-gritty mechanics of this mission are revealed, characters must first try and gather as much intelligence as possible from the NPCs made available to them. The nature of their presence in the desert, the context of the vote you will have to make, as well as the larger picture concerning the existence of the Iron Eye all depend upon solid investigation and shrewd interrogation. Or, perhaps, dumb luck.

Diplomat/Negotiator characters will be permitted to tag as many NPCs as the player wishes. All other characters will have to choose just one of the NPCs to tag -- choose wisely! You’re likely still going to uncover some sort of intel. (Do note, each NPC is played by a different mod. So if you see one NPC getting more hits than the other, consider hitting up a different one to help spread it out.)

Investigator characters will have a thread purpose-built to allow those players in particular to ask the mods particular (and pointed) questions about what can be observed. Please note that these questions should be direct and specific rather than vague. For example, ’are any of the Iron Eye members looking particularly upset?’ is a valid question. What is the group’s general mood?’ is not. Remember, these inquiries aren’t going to be done out of character. There will be an In Character thread to reply to, meaning that any move you commit to has consequences and could draw attention to your character. So be careful!

Doctor characters will not only look after their own, but they’ll get a chance to help the Iron Eye deal with their own wounded. Without any special powers, they’ll have to rely on good old fashioned know how. However, there may be some insight to be found in just what ails these mercenaries.

Quartermaster characters are primarily responsible for their own - other volunteers. The trucks they arrived on should be packed with necessary supplies to keep them healthy, but they may have to borrow from the MSF if any of the group turns out to be thirstier than the Malnosso anticipated.

Guard characters have the unenviable position of guarding the small convoy the volunteers arrived in, while also facing extra scrutiny from the Iron Eye. However, even with all the mercenaries around, there’s still things out in the desert to worry about. Lone Shift Hunters often hunt at night, where their dark skin and silent steps can make them incredibly stealthy, especially without special powers to aid in anticipating them.

The camp they’ll be heading to is large and staffed by the Iron Eye. They are at least five thousand strong with men and have their own supply of trucks, jeeps, tanks, and even a few helicopters. Although not nearly so uniform as the MSF, it’s clear that this is a group that means business. Their numbers are composed of men and women of many species, some with large wings and some with small. Throughout the mission, they’ll have their own people coming and going from different directions. Beyond their camp is all desert where brutal Shifts make powers unreliable and have been known to have sometimes lethal effects. Although the Iron Eye camp has set up a small amount of protection against these Shifts, it’s nowhere near as secure as what you’d find in a proper enclosure.

Playing in this mission means you guys have to figure out exactly what the Iron Eye are up to. On the tenth, a post will appear on [community profile] lucetiooc for you to vote on whether your character will assist the Iron Eye or sabotage their efforts, regardless if they are fully aware of what they’re up to. Or they can, of course, just do nothing and not vote.

--

The volunteers were transported to the outskirts of the desert courtesy of a cargo plane. Given the variety of participants, the pilot would only feel secure after turning the power cap on to one hundred percent, even though his co-pilot insisted they had nothing to worry about. After all, he said, Lucetians almost never try to escape. All the same, power cap it was, and the long flight set in. When they landed at the airstrip in Region Nine, it was revealed to be little more than just that. A paved area to land, a few buildings, and then a caravan of trucks that were to be handed over to the volunteers to make use of.

Several miles into the trip, it became obvious when they arrived in Iron Eye territory. Scouts from the mercenary crew spotted them even miles before they had arrived and cautiously followed them into the encampment. The soldiers greeted them with suspicion and weapons raised, but called off their attack. After all, the leader of this particular outfit was already well-acquainted with these new arrivals. Hoi Hidekan had dealt with them before now. Many of the other members of the Iron Eye likewise recognized Lucetians. Many of them weren’t so happy to see familiar faces, having been slain by Lucetians in the battle at Depot 8. Hidekan himself was on edge. He didn’t like where this seemed to be going, but it was with gritted teeth he allowed the Lucetians entered. Immediately, he assigned a guard to watch over them. He watched Trafalgar Law carefully in particular, but said nothing. For the moment, at least.

It wasn’t until a particularly jovial and blue man arrived that things eased up. Sir Catherine, known to the organization as Bilirubin, wore a wide grin as he came to meet the Lucetians. He greeted them warmly despite the situation.

“Ah, what are the chances of meeting out here in this place? I do hope the organization hasn’t sent you out here to arrest me. I imagine by now you may have heard about that eensy problem I ran into regarding my little plan to eliminate Count Zompano. Ahaha, well, I think we can all agree that absolutely went dreadfully. Who would have thought he’d join up with the cultists? In any case, I’m afraid I won’t let you do that. I’ve hired the Iron Eye, you see. I shan’t be turned over to the organization. Not when there’s work to do. In any case, I look forward to speaking to you all individually. Please, relax! Pitch a tent. Have some of our water. Enjoy the sights. The nights are rather bland, given the lack of stars, but the sand dunes to the west are rather splendid to look at once you’re good and properly dehydrated. In any case, off I go!”

And just like, Bilirubin popped back into one of the tents, but he’d be out and about again before long. Hidekan was less pleased and followed the blue man, leaving the Lucetians to figure out how they were going to make do for the next four days. Sticking close to Hidekan was a young woman, another former member of the MSF. But only one of the group would recognize her as Aka Furuka. After all, Gai had been involved in the same mission that involved putting a stop to her and the people she was working with. It was clear that she didn’t relish the idea of being recognized. Nobody would. The incident at the hospital was messy business.

With that settled, the volunteers were left to set up camp, figure out their supplies, and make themselves ready to investigate the surroundings, deal with any creatures that bump in the night, and tend to any other difficulties that would arise in their four days.

"Winter? This?" Elizabeth laughs, because the very idea of this weather being wintertime is ridiculous. The sun is directly overhead, and Elizabeth is certain she's never sweated this much in her life. "In Columbia, this sort of temperature would mean the entire city is on fire."

Curious, Elizabeth takes the satchel and examines the hat and goggles first. The white would probably help reflect the sun, though the goggles seem to be a bit of overkill. But, if Luke grew up in a place like this, clearly he knows best and Elizabeth isn't about to question it. It's a gift.

"Thank you Luke. Even if I had known how hot it was going to be, I don't think I have anything like this. City suspended over the clouds--it doesn't get terribly warm." She pauses going through the satchel pulling out--

"Oh. Ah, trousers..."

That's a new one.

Luke chuckles, motioning for her to put on the hat. "Yeah? My last trip to Cloud City didn't go so well myself, but I do remember the wind. And the temperature being a lot cooler."

Now, he blinks when she questions the trousers. That was pretty standard stuff, really. He's not from a culture that thinks twice about a woman wearing the same clothes as a man. Or that women are different than men at all.

"Yes, trousers. Nothing fancy, but it'll keep the sand out better and let you move more freely. Which helps in this heat, you use less energy."

Elizabeth examines them curiously. She's never even held a pair of trousers for an extended amount of time, but they did look quite a bit like bloomers. Robert would probably faint if he knew, but Luke does make some good points. Dealing with her skirt while in the medical tent was a little difficult, and the trousers seemed much more suited to the environment.

She doesn't want to talk about the places she's found sand in.

"I suppose I could wear them..." she muses, continuing to turn them over in her hands, peer inside, the whole nine yards. "I have two legs, same as you after all!"
thefinaljedi: (What now?!)

[personal profile] thefinaljedi 2013-09-11 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, uh, yeah? Why couldn't you?" Luke honestly doesn't understand the confusion and curiosity that he's feeling through the Force. It strikes him that it could be a religious thing, but she doesn't seem the sort so he dismisses that. A cultural thing maybe?

"It'll make your time in the desert a little easier, at least. And they're made of a lighter material than your current attire. Which counts for a lot."

[personal profile] tearmeanewone 2013-09-11 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, no I'm sure you're right!" Elizabeth says, holding out a reassuring hand. "It's just that... women, where and when I'm from, don't wear trousers unless they're soldiers."

She bites her lip for a moment and looks around at the camp. "But I guess I am one, now. Right?"
thefinaljedi: (Look to the Future)

[personal profile] thefinaljedi 2013-09-11 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
"Ah. Must just be a cultural thing we don't share. It's not really anything people where I'm from think about, honestly. Clothes are clothes, you wear what's appropriate for the task and the environment."

He stands up straight though, and gives her what he hopes is a reassuring look. She's young, really young, and it's never easy seeing someone so young come to a realization like that one. Being a soldier, being forced to grow up. He knows about that from personal experience.

"And yes, I'd say so. But hopefully you won't have to do much soldiering. Not anytime soon, anyway."
tearmeanewone: (062)

[personal profile] tearmeanewone 2013-09-11 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
"I hope there are a lot of 'cultural things' we don't share," Elizabeth says, giving Luke another hesitant smile and stuffing the trousers back into the bag. She pulls out the--shirt?--and starts examining that. Columbia, from what she'd gleaned, wasn't the most culturally diverse place and it had some very nasty habits and very strict tenets. ...most of which Elizabeth had already broken.

"I'm a doctor. I signed on to be a doctor, I've been a battlefield doctor for... almost a year. But I suppose doctors wear trousers too."
thefinaljedi: (Default)

[personal profile] thefinaljedi 2013-09-11 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
"Of that, Elizabeth, I have no doubt." Luke's own smile is fairly broad, and he's doing his best to come off as sincere and reassuring. It's not like he has a problem with other cultures, but conservative ones do somewhat baffle him.

"That...I can't really answer. In my world, most doctors are machines. But yeah. I'd say it's perfectly alright for a doctor to wear pants."
tearmeanewone: (001)

[personal profile] tearmeanewone 2013-09-11 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
"Machines?" Elizabeth's eyebrows raise dramatically, the shirt-jacket-thing forgotten. "How can a doctor be a machine?"

Of course when she thinks of a machine, she thinks of a turret. Or an Iron Patriot. Something with a gun attached to it.
thefinaljedi: (hmmm)

[personal profile] thefinaljedi 2013-09-11 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
"Highly advanced robots," Luke replies with a shrug. "They're programmed with a perfect working knowledge of human and non human sentient beings. Quite honestly, having a doctor that could see to the needs of every race in the Galaxy would be basically impossible. They're also restricted, they are programmed to do no harm through action or inaction to any sentient entity."
tearmeanewone: (039)

[personal profile] tearmeanewone 2013-09-13 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
"I suppose that makes sense..." Elizabeth can't imagine a type of machine that could do everything a doctor could do. Humans just seem too complicated and complex to have a machine look after them.

"Where I'm from, people can override what a machine is supposed to do. Make it attack someone it was previously friendly to. I guess that's why it seems a little risky to me."
thefinaljedi: (Oh Please)

[personal profile] thefinaljedi 2013-09-13 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
"That's called Slicing, where I'm from. But medical droids have a kind of...extra program underneath to prevent that. They simply can't. Even if someone makes them try, their arms will lock up and they'll deactivate."

An elegant solution, really. Besides, who would reprogram medical droids? The idea was rather baffling.

"So you say you've lived in a city in the clouds?"
tearmeanewone: (025)

[personal profile] tearmeanewone 2013-09-13 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
"Hmm... that would be safe, I suppose. We call it 'Possession' where I'm from. I guess nobody's gotten that far yet, or nobody takes vigors seriously." At least, when she was running around with Booker, it seemed like only Slade used vigors, despite how useful they were.

"Technically above most of them," Elizabeth clarified with a friendly smile. "Though I suppose sometimes we must have run into the odd thunderhead or something. But it was a selling point at one time. Never a rainy day in Columbia..."
thefinaljedi: (Endor Grin)

[personal profile] thefinaljedi 2013-09-13 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"Vigors?" That's a new word. Seems important, too.

"And I know exactly what you mean by never a rainy day. Where I'm from water is more valuable than gold. And in some cases, even spaceships."
tearmeanewone: (053)

[personal profile] tearmeanewone 2013-09-15 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
"Well if you grew up in a place hotter than this one, I can see why," Elizabeth laughs.

"Vigors..." she makes a few strange faces trying to figure out how to explain it. "They're a tonic that reworks your genetic code to allow certain abilities. Like the ability to set things on fire, or levitate things in the air..."
thefinaljedi: (Intrigued)

[personal profile] thefinaljedi 2013-09-15 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
"Sounds a lot like Gene-Splicing. Some people use that sort of thing where I'm from, says it makes them feel like Jedi temporarily, but then...I'm not sure. Do these Vigors work permanently?"
tearmeanewone: (039)

[personal profile] tearmeanewone 2013-09-15 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
"From what I've seen they're permanent... I don't know if there's a way to undo it either. Booker DeWitt, one of the men I live with, he drank a few. I think he still has the abilities they gave him, even here.

"But what's a Jedi?"

((OOC: SO... I can totally ignore this if you'd like me to, thoughts? 8D))
thefinaljedi: (Serious Smile)

[personal profile] thefinaljedi 2013-09-15 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
"Then yeah, it's a lot like Splicing, but...are there any known side effects? Splicing has quite a few, and doing it is actually illegal within the Republic."

At the second question he smiles fondly. This is something he never minds talking about.

"I am, for one. An order of peacekeepers and guardians back home. Defenders of peace and justice, and people who can tap into the Force. Which is an energy produced by all life, something Jedi manipulate."

(Yes, please. I'm okay with 4th walling in general but that's just weird...)
