House of M - The Beginning

Summary: Billy returns from a kidnapping feeling a bit, er, different. A white light envelops the village for just a moment, and when it fades... well. All kinds of things are different, actually.
Rating: Varies, anything above R take it elsewhere!

It starts off so innocently, early on the morning of October 1st. A burst of light, a warm rush of energy that consumes everything it touches, and it's gentle enough to feel like stepping out into sunlight from the shade. It's so brief that some people might not even notice it happened. But there are certainly... differences. Some subtle, some not. And those changed won't even understand the problem.

After all, why would perfection be a problem?

The truth is, there are no problems. There can't be. It's perfect, Billy thinks. Believes it. His belief is his reality, and now, it's their reality. It all has to be perfect; they deserve it, all of them, for one reason or another. And he'll do whatever he has to protect that perfection from being tainted, ruined, taken away from them.

Teddy died so this could happen, after all.

I kind of feel that way, to be honest.

[The sandwich, whether it looks tasty or not, is unappealing only because he has hardly any appetite these days. Still, to keep up appearances, he'll sit down and give it a shot.]

How are you guys doing, by the way? You, and Leah, and Thor...

[Loki narrows his eyes.]

It is odd. Everything is most well and you look everything but well. Why?

[Loki has no idea that he is under a spell, not at all. Still he does worry about his friend.]

My brother and my bff are fine. Thor is outside, Leah is inside her quarters waiting for this great sandwich.

[Loki's smile grows a bit bigger. He is happy.]

At this point I almost dare to say that my life is perfect. And I promise you, Loki's are not familiar with having a perfect life.

...Mm. Just not sleeping well lately.

[He shrugs it off, picking at his sandwich. It's not important, so not important. What matters more is that everything's perfect.]

I'm glad to hear it, though. But you shouldn't keep your girl waiting too long.

[Loki leans forward and looks at Billy. His eyes narrow a bit. After that he moves to crawl half over the table to reach out and put his hand on Billy's forehead.]

You should not avoid my questions. Especially not when you are a terrible liar.

And Leah can be most patient.

[He does blush a bit, though.]

I'm not lying.

[Technically, it is true. From a certain point of view.

Teddy would have laughed at that.]

Anyway, I'm not worried about it. It'll pass.

[I'll get used to this.]

[Loki pulls back and frowns, sitting on his knees on top of the table now.]

You are.

[It is a simple statement but Loki is pretty sure about it.]

You are not well. Why would you lie about something that is most obvious?

[He moves to place both of his hands on Billy's cheeks.]

You are aware that all your secrets are safe with me, yes? I have never ever told one to anyone. You can trust me.

What is it with you and never just accepting my answer?

[His exhaustion shows more prominently as his irritation rises, and he scowls at Loki briefly before glancing away.]

Sometimes tired is tired. There's no deeper meaning to it, no trust issues, no lies.

[Loki sits back and watches Billy for a moment. Frowning when he scowls.]

Because I am worried. That is what friends do, be worried about eachother. You do not look well.

[He turns to Teddy who is standing close to Billy , not saying much.]

Don't you think, Teddy Altering Man?

[selfhelp]

["Teddy"'s response is to smile patiently and shake his head. "Don't worry about it, Loki. We're already working on it."

Billy relaxes minimally, toying with his food.]

See? This kind of thing takes time, that's all. You know how it is.

[Loki moves to sit back on his chair.]

All is well, then. My apologies.

Why worry when everything is perfect, right? Right.

[selfhelp]

...Right. [That's better. It's more like how it should be, really.] So you're happy?

[not_a_troll]

[Loki looks at Billy for a long time and finally nods.]
Yes. I am very happy.
[His smile is bright again.]

[selfhelp]

[That's better. That's what he'd wanted to see.]

Well... good.

[Good enough.]

So tell me more about this monster sandwich, yeah?

[Of course Billy’s condition is still something unsettling so Loki decides to focus on that sandwich and on Thor and Leah waiting for him inside his room. They never really met. He hopes they will have a good conversation about a certain trickster god’s dashing features.]

Good, yes.

[A small nod.]
