Who: Jack Holden, Simon Lauchlan, Eugene Woods, Sam Yao, and anyone they can tempt in
What: Basically a slumber party
When: November 1st afternoon and evening
Where: One of the villas in Luceti's housing area
Summary: Luceti's residents of Abel Township have landed themselves under house arrest. But even if they can't go to the parties, who's to say they can't bring the party to them? (Or at least some takeout, geez, this punishment thing is hungry work.)
Rating: PG? It's just some post-zombie-apocalypse dudes and their houseguests, it's not really gonna be racy.

Maybe Halloween Land hadn't been the best destination for a small cluster of survivors of the zombie apocalypse.

In their defense, they hadn't known when they'd walked in that literal zoms would be all over the place. Even as placid as the things were, all it took were a few too many of the shambling dead in one place, strained nerves and the wrong line of conversation, and one poorly-timed jumpscare to set off the powder keg of their collective neuroses and send them sprinting for the nearest defensible position between them and the exits. And sure, all weapons had been taken to the battle dome. But where they came from, all that defined a weapon was a favourable combination of weight, length, sharpness, and maximum velocity. Where they came from, they'd all learned a few behaviours on an instinctual level.

It was sort of lucky, actually, that they only had managed to get themselves landed under house arrest for the remainder of the day. It meant that they still had contact with the outside world - or at least the portions of it that wandered close enough to the open windows.

[he frowns at that, giving Simon a sideways look.]

I'm not. I just do my job. Same as everyone else.

[Simon just laughs and rolls his eyes, looking amused.] You're so cute when you're being all naive.

[Sam rolls his eyes.]

I am not naive. You're just being impossible.

No reason that can't both be true.

Do you ever take things seriously?

Who said I'm not taking it seriously? [Simon shot back, still sprawled quite comfortable in Sam's lap and staring upside down at him.] What am I not taking seriously enough?

You treat me like a kid. It's annoying.

Do I? [Simon looks surprised by this accusation, a puzzled frown slipping across his lips.] I don't think of you as a kid. Naive, maybe, but that just means you didn't have a lot of time to experience things before the world ended. But trust me, Sam, I don't see you as a kid.

You do. I know I'm not... that I'm just a student but I'm trying. I'm still chief operator, not just someone playing around.

[Simon sits up now, forgetting about the movie, because this is way more important.] Sammy, I've never thought that. Do you think I'd be out there, trusting you with my ass, if I didn't think you were the damned best at what you do? I'm not an idiot. I don't have a death wish. I don't give a fuck what you were before Abel, I know what you are now. And no, that's not a kid. I know that. I swear it.

I'm not the best though. There are loads of people better than I am. Janine could do it. Plenty of people could.

Janine's not you. Neither is anyone else. I mean, Amber's alright, I suppose. And Gene tried it and nearly got me killed, so lets not repeat that, thanks. But you are the best, Sammy. I'm pretty sure the rest of us Runners agree that it's not quite right when you're not the one guiding us on Comms.

And hey! I listen! I don't always do what you say, but I totally listen.

Amber's gonna be a great operator. I know she is. The Runners really need to stop making her feel bad. [About not being him. That- that's just weird man.]

And you seem to take perverse pleasure in trying to give me a heart attack.

[Simon blinks in confusion, feeling both offended and protective.] Wait, what? Who made Amber feel bad? I just said she was alright at it. But she's not you. You're our Sam. You're pretty much an honorary Runner yourself.

Nothing gained if you don't risk a little, Sammy. It's usually paid off, right?

Everyone. I mean... people kept making comments. 'Where's Sam? Why isn't Sam there?'. It makes her feel bad. Like she's second rate. I know how that feels so...

[He rolls his eyes.]

Yeah, usually.

Well. [Simon blinks at him a moment, stumped.] You're usually there. We get worried when you're not. She's not second rate, she's just not you. [He doesn't understand why this is such a difficult concept.]

I have to sleep and have rest days too. And I can't run three missions at once unlike some people. [Fucking Nadia.]

As long as she gets you home safe, it doesn't matter.

You're also not going to run us knowingly on a suicide mission. At least not without a head's up about it, first. [Considering he picked up on that nod to Nadia, he feels this is a valid point to bring up.] And yeah, we appreciate that she does. But that doesn't change the fact that given our choice... well. We just feel safer when it's you, Sam. We know you'll do everything you can to get us home again.

Well, yeah. And I hope it never comes to that. Ever. [He didn't want to send them out with no hope of return. He wanted to keep them safe.]

I just feel bad for her. If she'd been the first person to become an operator, you'd all be saying the same about her.

No. I think we'd all still have a soft-spot for you, Sammy. [Simon's pretty bluntly honest about that.] But we do like Amber. She's nice. Hell. She's a genius with the kids.

[Sam snorts at that, shaking his head.]

I'd be no-one if I wasn't an operator. Really. You wouldn't even know I existed.

[Simon just gives him a serious look, mood a little at odds with his normal carefree dismissal of anything regarding seriousness.]

No one's a no-one, Sam. Especially now.

I suppose the gene pool has been dramatically reduced over recent months.

Anyway, I'm just saying, when we get back, everyone should just tone it down on asking for me when Amber's operating.

[Simon groaned and flopped back over into Sam's lap unceremoniously.]

Can we not talk about going back?

I know. I don't want to go back either but... we have to sometime, surely? I mean, I'm worried about everyone. With everything that's going on, Van Ark and the Major's plans and rebuilding...
