Get Bent for a Birthday

Who: The Investigation Team and friends.
What: A small birthday party for a big guy.

Where: Yu's apartment
Summary: It's Kanji's 17th birthday, so obviously the team and friends need to get together to celebrate.
Rating: PG

It was Kanji's birthday, so of course his close friends from home were going to go all out for him; that's just what they did for each other, after all. Yukiko was in charge of decorations, and Cross had been given the solemn task of helping her, if only so she didn't sneak away to the kitchen. Yu, of course, had taken supreme command of the cooking bouncing back and forth between cooking dinner and baking the perfect cake like he was born in front of a stove.

Nothing bad could go wrong here... right?

Yu paused at the door, realizing that Kanji was probably blaming himself for that. He glanced back at him, giving him a reassuring smile.

"It's okay; turns out I needed to remake it anyway," he said. Like hell he was going to just give Kanji a mediocre cake for his birthday.

The taller boy blinked a bit, still thrown off at how his senpai could read his mind. Granted, Kanji wasn't the most complicated kid ever...

"Nah, that's cool, Senpai. It's the thought that counts, right?"

Yu was just that knowledgeable about his friends. He offered him a small smile and a nod, before disappearing back in the kitchen.

Kanji is still not sure what to do, so he followed his friend into the kitchen, trying not to look lost.

"So, uh, you don't have to do this. I would've been cool with just a 'Happy Birthday, Kanji' or somethin'."

Yu dumped the ruined cake, going back to the dishes he had just finished washing to start up a new one.

"Kanji, it's us," he said. "We wouldn't do anything less."

"I guess. I just... you didn't havta go outta your way just for me. That's all I'm sayin'."

Senpai knows all, okay? And she just happened to answer the journal post that was locked away from you we'll go with that.

"Kanji, you're one of my friends," Yu reminded him softly. "There's no going out of my way here."
