Where: The barracks.
Summary: A few LP members have organized a get-together at the barracks for those with an interest in Luceti Projects to talk, eat, and relax while socializing.

[ Quite a bit of thought and elbow grease has been put into preparing the barracks for this event. A banner is tacked across above the entrance that reads, "Welcome to Luceti Projects Opening Celebration!" in green paint. It's not exactly the sort of arts and craft masterpiece it could have been had they enlisted the help of one of the kids (such as Ikki), but it's better than nothing.

Just before entering the main festivities is a table with a sign-up sheet, manned by different members of Luceti Projects on a rotating basis, to answer questions or encourage sign-up.

Through the open doors of the barracks' largest hall, long wooden farmstyle tables have been set in rows to encourage mingling, placed adjacent to tables filled with food and drink that hug the walls. A wide range of different appetizers, snacks, and larger entrees have been set out for attendees, with plenty of plates, utensils, cups, and napkins. As a way to encourage more cultural exchange, the cuisine, catered by Okumura Rin, includes a little from different worlds -- cheese and crackers; sushi and yakitori; pasta and roast chicken; salads and other vegetable dishes, including a vegetable and potato stew, heavily featuring corn. A few sweets, such as cookies and a few cakes, sit alongside the savory dishes, next to which sits a very large bowl of non-alcoholic fruit punch (courtesy of Ms. Ginia). There is plenty of water, soft drinks, teas and coffee, and milk.

For those interested in trying out a more communal dish, placed about every five feet of table is a hot pot, specifically for sukiyaki, inside which vegetables, mushrooms, tofu, thin-sliced beef slowly simmer in a delicate broth of soy sauce, mirin, and sugar. Under these simmering ingredients is a base of udon and shirataki noodles to soak up the broth. Small bowls, utensils, and condiments such as soy sauce and eggs for the sauce, sit alongside each pot to encourage communal sharing.

On the other side of the hall is a wet bar (wo)manned by Ginia, with plenty of booze and an alcoholic variety of punch. Coolers filled with beer sit on the floor behind the wet bar. Martinis and other mixed drinks will be served in biodegradable plastic cups.

The smell of charcoal and wood burning wafts through the open back doors, from the glow of a respectably sized bonfire built behind the building, alongside which a long table is set, its surface filled with an assortment of graham crackers, chocolate, marshmallows, large sausages, kabobs with different meats and vegetables, and skewers for roasting.

A few yards away are the outdoor training grounds where a rather large array of weapons, both lethal and non-lethal of the wooden variety, have been set out for anyone who would like to spar. Some dried-out logs have been repurposed into a spectator area. The only rules posted: no use of magic or anything else that could critically harm opponents or spectators. No guns, except in the target practice area. Absolutely no killing. ]

(OOC: Assume that your character will be served drinks by Ginia at the bar, so use the bar area to mingle with whomever else, unless you’d like a thread. If your character would like to man the sign-up area, feel free to just drop them in on anyone. If they don’t know how to answer a question, just have them direct anything to either Erwin or Kakashi. Most importantly, have fun!!

[At one of her rare breaks away from the bar, Ginia catches Erwin by the food table, a hand touching lightly against his shoulder to catch his attention. She smiles at him and gestures at the plates of sushi on the table.]

/You should try the S-U-S-H-I if you haven't already./

[ At her touch, he turns; at this point, that touch is familiar enough that he expects Ginia, and he's right. ]

Sushi.

[ Ah, so that's what it's called. He speaks the foreign the word slowly. ]

What is it, exactly?

/R-I-C-E, S-E-A-W-E-E-D, raw fish usually, prepared with fresh ingredients and care to prevent any contamination./

[She points at the plate of California rolls, which she's always found to be a safe bet when it comes to introducing someone to sushi.]

/C-A-L-I-F-O-R-N-I-A roll, named after a state in the U-S-A. Vegetables and C-R-A-B meat. The plate next to it is T-U-N-A, a type of fish. The orange one is S-A-L-M-O-N./

[ Raw fish. It seems like a strange thing to eat, even without the additon of whatever 'seaweed' is. Overall it doesn't sound very pleasant--but if Ginia insists, it can't hurt to have a bite. He picks up one of the so-called 'California rolls.' ]

'Crab' is a variety of fish as well, I take it?

[ Wrong, Erwin. ]

[Hm, how to explain what a crab while still keeping it somewhat appetizing? Best to not try.]

/Not quite, though it lives in the water. Remind me to show you a picture sometime. And while I would love to be your guide to food, I was hoping you had a few minutes to spare. There's something I would like your assistance and expertise on./

[His help is practically assured, but Ginia still picks and chooses her signs, giving just enough to get his interest and his compliance.]

[ Well, that's enough information, at least. The sushi is gone in a bite, and it genuinely doesn't taste as strange as he'd been expecting. An odd texture, but--as Levi might say--not bad. Once he's processed Ginia's request, however, he gives her a nod. ]

/Of course. Shall we step out?/

[ He chooses to sign in return rather than speak, effectively barring that majority of the people around them from their conversation already. ]

[Ginia nods. She grabs a plate and adds a few bits of roast chicken to it then leads them outside, finding a quiet spot not too far from the training grounds. Laika pads over, tail wagging happily. Ginia whistles for her dog to sit, then places the plate of chicken in front of her. There, one happy dog taken care of. Onto business.]

/L-A-W and I have been working on plans for an emergency alarm system, some way to alert the village of danger outside of the journals. We need something, or a combination of methods, that can be heard and seen from across the village and beyond./

[ Law. Trafalgar Law. He remembers that name--and the man whom it belongs to--very well, and not only because he sounds remarkably like Levi. ]

A fine idea. What are your plans thus far?

/Nothing solid yet, but we've discussed having some sort of bell tower with an additional visual signal, and other signals spread out across the village and surrounding area. However, that would require a set of dedicated volunteers to raise the alarm. Signal flares have also been considered as a visual signal./

[Right now it's all ideas and speculation as they gather input. A lot depends on how involved people in the village are willing to get and how dedicated people are. Because complacency kills even the best of ideas and so far it seems to be a troubling trend.]

I am familiar with signal flares myself. They would prove useful as a visual signal; they work well enough for us on expeditions.

[ He'd come up with the system himself, but that doesn't really bear mentioning. ]

If there is not already a suitable tower available, we would need volunteers for the construction of that as well.

[ In other words, this is going to require a lot of people. But then again, he supposes that is part of the reason Luceti Projects now exists. ]

/We don't expect this project to be an easy one at all, certainly something the village will have to agree to./

[Because even if they get a signal tower together, even if they draft out evacuation plans and teach them to the village, even if they have response teams ready and everything is sound, if people don't follow the plans, then it could all be for nothing.

And as Ginia's already learned from surveying the general mood and network chatter, people err toward the side of acting independently.]

/Frankly, there's more working against us than for./

[ Erwin allows himself a tight-lipped smile at that. ]

[ But in all seriousness: ]

It will take a great deal of time and effort, but I believe it to be worthwhile. I can check on signal flares myself, whether they are able to be found or constructed.

/Always is. I find it better that way./

[If there wasn't resistance, Ginia would be even more suspicious of everyone around. Resistance means people who can provide new perspectives and things to think on, people who can tear apart their plans so the alliance can build up stronger ones.]

/That would be appreciated. I have a few possible leads on people who could assist with building and areas to scope out. But I've also heard surveying is something you and your men have expertise in./
