Even now, there are only embers...

Summary: Saori and Vegeta are stuck living out a Fairy Tale RPG adventure with Cliff as an overlord. Shenanigans ensue?
Rating: PG-13? Possible violence and language. Maybe.

Lazeria, a once peaceful barony, is a land under siege by dark forces and hellish magic. The baron, a noble and kind (if somewhat oafish) man named Cliff has been cursed by black magic during a feast. A sorceress appeared and transformed him into a beast-man and the once bright land fell into shadow. The streets darken, strange creatures randomly attack passersby, and the baron himself hasn’t been himself for some time.

Enter two strangers from another land, intent on completing a mysterious quest. A fortuneteller had directed the pair to Lazeria, telling them that if they could defeat the accursed lord of the land that not only would light return, but that wealth and power beyond imagining would be their reward. That draws them in like moths to a flame, and the duo arrives in the dead of night, eager to figure out how best to overthrow Cliff and claim their prize.

"Yes, and the minute you go to get some of that hair it'll turn on you in no time," he shoots back. Look at it, enjoying itself. He scowls, holding himself haughtily over it as he comes over to inspect the creature in her arms.

"If you won't do it, I will."

"What's got you so afraid of it?" she asks, continuing to tickle the monkey under the chin. "And won't killing it weaken the power of it's hair anyway? I'm no novice, but I know a link is strongest when it's done between living entities."

"I am not afraid of some stinking monkey!" He doesn't try to argue the point, however he is prepared to yell until he's blue in the face. His hand raises, and he chants a little incantation under his breath as it glows purple- which makes the monkey reach out expectantly towards it, trying to grab at his hand.

Of course, his face twists up in disgust and he quickly yanks it away, hiding it from the little one. "Ugh, voracious little devil."

"He's eating your magic..." Saori snickers, patting the little guy on the head. What a good monkey, messing with Vegeta like that. It saved her a lot of trouble, and gave her ammunition for later.

"Do you want me to take some of his hair, then?"

Glaring again at it, his teeth grit in frustration. "Just do the deed, I don't care if you leave it alive or not, I don't want to deal with this nuisance anymore."

The monkey looks back to him, eyes wide. That was its food, where did it go? It looked so yummy.

Seeing no reason to kill the thing, Saori nods and pokes the monkey's nose with a finger to distract it, while the hand holding it pinches out and palms a bit of it's fur.

"How much did you need?"

"A handful. Now stop wasting time." He inches away from it, wanting to keep his distance. It already seemed to like Saori so he wants to make sure it doesn't think he's its friend either.

She manages to pull out a bit more here and there without seeming to attract the beast's notice, which is good. The last thing she wants is an irate ape in her arms.

"Alright, I think I got it."

"Good, now get rid of the darn thing." His head inclines toward the little monkey, who seems to enjoy sitting in Saori's arms. "He's not coming with us."

Because who would end up feeding him? Vegeta would. And he is not going to put himself through that.

"Oh? You don't want to keep a magic-eating monkey around? Could be useful, if raised properly," she gives him a teasing look while still holding onto the animal.

She'd feed it, but she doesn't really want to keep it aside from a way to mess with him.

He growls in response. "No. He'll cause more problems than he's worth. Now get rid of it. We don't need a freeloader along for this ride."

"He's not a freeloader. Magic hair seems useful," she points out. They did come all the way out here, after all.

Only now the monkey starts squirming and hops out of her arms and right at Vegeta, grabbing hold of his arm and giving his fingers a tentative lick. And then it squeaks in delight!

Dinner, it seems, is served.

"H-Hey!" He cries out as the monkey licks his fingers. Yanking his hand away, he takes a few more steps back but it follows him nimbly, climbing up the wizard. It lands on Vegeta's shoulder, with the Saiyan's hand in tow, shoving his fingers in its mouth. It seemed pretty happy.

But Vegeta is not enjoying the feeling of his magic being drained right out of him, so he removes his fingers from its grasp.

"Get off of me."

Saori is no help, at all, she's just laughing raucously now, pointing at him and covering her mouth as she splutters and chuckles and giggles.

"You...hahahah, look at you! Go monkey!"

In anger and embarrassment, he goes to grab the chimp off of him. But he's found that it's too fast and it switches to his other shoulder, sniffing him and latching its mouth onto Vegeta's ear. It got lucky, it found a being that's just full of arcane power. It would never run out of food!

"Would you- get off!" He frantically tries grabbing at it again when he feels it sucking his power through his ear of all places, but it's too fast, dodging and moving around the back of his neck, even daring to try to reach out and grab his hand again.

"Saori! Quit laughing and do something!"

She does notice the power draining out of him, her finely tuned senses showing her the ape's ability. It's an animal, and it's cute...but if she doesn't do something, it might actually cause some lasting harm. The laughter dies away and she reaches out with practiced speed, nearly superhuman, and catches the ape by the back of the neck. It's heavier than it was, and seems to have grown larger.

"Well, I guess we know how they grow now," she muses as she looks at the squirming monkey.

He rubs his neck. He was alright, that thing could have eaten a lot more than that and he'd of been okay, but it still disgusts him that it did that.

"I told you to kill it. But no, you probably thought it was adorable and didn't feel the need." As if to mock him, the monkey burps, a small bit of purple breath coming out of its mouth. He pulls a face, but then takes a second to think on it.

"You did say that Lord Cliff might be a magic user too, didn't you?"

"It is adorable. And I don't like killing adorable things. Just ugly ones."

She looks at the ape and then back to Vegeta.

"He may be. But if this thing feeds on magic, it could turn into something we couldn't deal with alone. Or...rather, that I'd have to deal with alone."

"Hm." He takes a step closer, thinking more on it. "It's docile now. It didn't bite me, it only sucked on my fingers and ear. Listen. Give him here."

He reaches out to take it from Saori, if she'll let him have it again.

She does so, dropping the little thing into his hand wordlessly. She doesn't want it, and if it bites him again she'll probably punt it, cute or not.

Taking it and holding it in his arms, he does exactly what he really hoped he wouldn't have to do again and gives it his free hand. Of course, it takes it and sticks it in its mouth, sucking on it happily. Vegeta doesn't seem to be phased at all by the power loss, and after a short amount of time, the monkey stops feeding and glances back and forth between Saori and Vegeta, looking content. It had grown substantially, but the added weight doesn't seem to bother the wizard. His build suggested he could support the weight.

"Well now. Maybe you are worth keeping around after all. I think we should make sure he's hungry the morning we decide to take things a bit further around here, wouldn't you say?"

She watches the monkey suckle on his finger with a mixture of amusement, curiosity, and mild distaste. She didn't mind monkeys but...watching one eat from her partner's finger was weird. Either way, when he speaks up, she raises an eyebrow.

"If you say so. You were the one who wanted to get rid of it, so who am I to argue?"

Pet monkey? Okay, sure.

Huffing in mild annoyance, he puts the monkey back down on the ground. How could she not appreciate the evil plan he's got going here. He seems to think she should be much more excited about this than she appeared to be. Even if it did seem a little crazy.

"As long as it doesn't suck me dry, it'll be useful. You'll see." Brushing himself off, he begins to walk back toward the village, the monkey happily following its new food source. "Now let's go. That went quicker than expected, but I think daylight will serve us better for the rest of what we need."

She doesn't get excited, really. He should know that by now, and if he doesn't then she'll make it clearer.

"Right, and what else was it we needed? I assume you mean the digging part, yes?"

"That's right. For your future problems with your odor." He's left out why he'd even brought it up in the first place. "We'll have to gather quite a bit of it so you don't knock me out as well with that smell."
