Who: Everyone!
What: First Annual Luceti Tournament
When: May 2nd
Where: Battle Dome
Summary: Peony has made good on his promise to set up a tournament and today is the day for all the action.
Rating: PG-13 for the violence/fighting/possible language.

Finally the promised day has arrived! As competitors and audiences alike gather for the start, the whole outside area draws the eye to the grand carpet and banners with symbols for every event. There is also a table being restocked with free snacks and water bottles for those waiting around or still finding their way. Most notably, though, is a signboard with the times for all the events and competitors.

Whether you're competing or here for the entertainment, however, it's hoped you'll enjoy the events and fight or cheer hard! Now without further ado, make your own threads or comment around and let the games begin...

No, no, it's much easier if you're a scientist, or if you're being airy. A dark look crosses his face, and while he banishes it quick enough for a more neutral expression, it doesn't quite leave his eyes. ]

Yeah, not really. I'm not for that life, looking at things with an objective lens. Historically, I've been more a victim of that passion.

It doesn't seem to have stopped you in pursuing it on your own terms. Or at least, from putting up the front of doing so.

Well, you're certainly a performer. And you rarely seem to stop... because it's easier not to? Because that's the image you've been trying to cultivate all along?

If I were an actor, then I'd have to say that the majority of the time I'd be rehearsing, and even if I were living some sort of an image, then I would be looking forward to those moments where it's not simply the staging, it's time for the "performance." However, that's only if. Maybe I'm actually sincere about everything.

[ He wonders, really, if she's okay. That incident a while back at the tea shop was weird and she reacted to this chat a little oddly. But then it is a far more personal topic than they've ever breached before ]

And, actually, it's been said that "All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players."

Maybe. [She doesn't think she's too far off the mark; after all she had known Zelos and had taken him entirely at face value up until after some time spent in Luceti, and there was something... similar about the mannerisms. But why push on someone else's defenses if she was practically unwilling to compromise on her own? Always such a thin line.] In either case, only you know the real answer and how it applies to you.

[But alas, despite her long years in Luceti, she hasn't caught up on every single aspect of earth culture to recognize the quote from Shakespeare, so she can only shrug and tilt her head at him.] ... Though that is an interesting quote. Hmm.

It's Shakespeare. Admittedly, one of his plays I don't know particularly well, so I couldn't tell you the context, but the line itself's famous.

[ He focuses on that part, and answers that part, because... well, it's true only he can know it, and it's also true that this is a part of his performance. He's sort os weighing how he wants to pull down the curtain ]

It sounds a little cynical, if layered. That's likely what makes it famous. Although, granted, I'm not that familiar with his works beyond what's come up in classes. He seemed to have a fairly large selection in the library. [But she has a tendency to gravitate towards the non-fictional selections available if it could be defined that way.]

Oh yeah, of course he does. The Bard's responsible for over thirty-five plays and over a hundred fifty poems, and people are still able to quote him like four hundred years after he died. [ Masaomi himself can actually quote more famous ones like Hamlet a bit more extensively ]

I see. You've used one or two for a school project before, haven't you?

Mmmhm. Sure did, after all, we did writing.

So that's why I had seen some of the works before. Ordinarily I don't usually look at books that aren't historical in some way, though even fiction has it's merits on revealing the creative process of times that seem beyond reach.

[Not that it matters too much in Luceti, where people could be from any time period...]

History... huh? [ He shrugs a bit and folds his arms behind his head ] That's actually always been my worst subject, like if stuff happened in the past I'm not sure I can keep focused on it.

Well, I know being a historian isn't meant for everyone. [Alas.] But what do you mean that you can't keep focused on it? You can keep other things clear in your mind, can't you?

I don't mean to diss your passion, Raine-san, but when it comes to something that happened way before I was ever born, there's a part of me which thinks "when did this thing ever matter to me."

Well, if you look at it from the perspective that a good majority of any people may take the stance that history can be ignored... the results will follow as well.

That whole "doomed to repeat it" logic?

There are certain patterns that resurface time and again no matter what sort of civilization you're looking at. And it's only after, in hindsight, when those connections are made.

But if the connections only get made in hindsight, doesn't that mean that the past can't predict the future? Because that would mean it provided foresight.

You're not meant to use it as a prediction. Only... if you see that a situation is circling a certain way, you would be able to look back on the past and try to learn from mistakes made there. The reality is that it's about as idealistic as it sounds. We learn, we adapt, we make mistakes, and then we fall into the same patterns... and yet it doesn't make it less interesting for historians to study.

[ That still sounds dull to him, to see patterns in something so far outside of your own experience. Or at least, patterns in things which aren't meant to make you emotional evoke to them. A story is meant to create a reaction, the reality of history doesn't have that sort of "taste" to steal Cilan's term to it.

Hmmm. Yeah, I could see it from that angle, Raine-san. Society probably doesn't advance without some attempts at it.

It doesn't. And then you also have to consider how much of the larger picture you're able to perceive, from any point of view. If you're striving for a change. Some individuals may just be concerned with living their lives in the moment... unaware of what the wider world could have in store for them. [Her expression changes, as she continues, eyes starting to light up...] And then, to come across the remains of those societies, their lost ways and knowledge ...

Lost ways and knowledge, huh? Like that old Indiana Jones stuff, where they actually knew more than we thought?

[Well, at least she's somewhat heard of Indiana Jones by now to piece together the reference...]

Exactly! Some civilizations could get very advanced before a fall, whether it's because of their advancements or do to an outside force they weren't prepared for.

If they were as advanced as say, today, though, how could they have even fallen?
