Zompania Draft: Coming Home

Who: Anyone drafted to Zompania, or recruited as reinforcements, or left behind in the village. SO. Everybody!
What: The draftees and reinforcements return to the village.
When: May 26, early early in the morning
Where: Back in Luceti
Summary: Most draftees and reinforcements return to Luceti in the very early hours; now, instead of a medevac site for the draft, the village is a welcome (?) refuge from the nightmare of Zompania for its own. There's a high likelihood it still looks a lot like it has in the past few days; those in the fight didn't even get a chance to shower before returning.

"Technically?" he asked. "At a tribunal at the Starfleet Academy accusing me of cheating on his Kobayashi Maru test - which I didn't. Now he's my first officer on my ship, the Enterprise, and the Chief Science Officer." Maybe he had cheated a little. Maybe.

And a meat grinder would have been much kinder than what they had been through.

Vastra took a silent moment to process all of that, then laughed. "You cheated on his test, then he became your first officer? What a way to make amends," she laughed again.

"Well, there was kind of lot in between there, but yes, that's basically how it worked out," he laughed. "I guess it is kind of funny when I explain it like that. And I didn't cheat. I said so, didn't I?"

"You did say so, which is why I don't believe it. You are a 'special sort', after all. And if Mister Spock is as logical as you claim him to be, I would think he would refrain from publicly accusing someone of cheating without sufficient evidence."

"His "evidence" was that his program was supposedly unbeatable, which is horse shit," he sniffed, affronted. "The whole "lesson" that was supposed to teach was stupid anyways. Why would they want to teach Captains to accept defeat in front of seemingly insurmountable odds? If anything, we should be teaching them to think outside the box and turn the situation to their advantage."

Okay, so maybe it was still a tiny sore spot for him.

"Mm..." Vastra nodded, taking in the story and appearing to consider it. "You know Captain, these are the sorts of things that make for sudden, nasty arguments. Have you ever considered couples counseling?"

"No, we got through the whole "marooning me on an ice planet" thing, and attempting to get my tried. Thankfully, a crisis intervened and it wasn't really brought up again," he waved his hand idly, dismissing it.

"At least, it wasn't brought up again until your rather impassioned retelling of the story," Vastra said airily, as though talking about how dark it was. Perhaps she was edging on nagging now, but she always found young love absolutely adorable. She couldn't help it.

It wasn't young love, it was nothing like that. It was some weird, deeply emotional bond that had taken almost two years to get used to, for the way it sat in the back of his head. He could feel it now, buzzing, knew Spock knew he was here, but he was to tired and hurt to send comfort down the line to him.

"We've worked through it," he shrugged. "Saving planets together kind of does that."

Vastra was 65 million years old. Everything was young to her.

"Yes, that sort of work does have a tendency to bring people together. That was how Jenny and I bonded, in the beginning. Fighting Cybermen together," she sighed fondly. "Difficult times, but we managed."

"Who's Jenny?" he asked, grateful for a change of topic, though he'd move to the "Cybermen" next.

Vastra looked at Kirk as though he'd turned into a Cyberman. Had she really not said anything to Kirk about Jenny? The thought was a little shocking, given Vastra took any excuse to talk about her.

"She's my wife."

"Really? Is she here?" he asked, not at all alarmed that a lizard woman was married to another woman in the least. More he had not expected her to be married at all, but why not? He was dating a Vulcan, so clearly weirder things had happened before.

"...no," Vastra looked ahead, suddenly concerning herself with where they were headed. It always hurt to remember that Vastra had been without Jenny for almost a year now. "No, she's not."

He was quiet for a moment, suddenly feeling guilty. Gently, he squeezed her shoulders.

"You'll see her again," he said quietly, because what other comfort was there? "Maybe even get to kick some more Cyberman butt when you do."

Vastra snorted. "No doubt. All of London would fall apart if we weren't around. Scotland Yard can barely find it's own nose."

She would see Jenny again. And part of her was comforted by the fact that it would appear, to both of them, as though nothing had happened.

"I can believe that," he nodded, but then, Kirk had never had a good relationship with the police, human or robotic. "She sounds like a really great woman."

"She is," Vastra nodded, then she had to take a moment to bite her tongue and swallow the lump in her throat. She missed Jenny most of all when she came home from these kinds of battles and had to fall asleep completely alone.

"She would have to be, to marry a lizard woman."

"Well, I for one think you are a very attractive lady," he said. "So Jenny's a smart girl to see that too, if you ask me."

"Captain, I'm only vaguely human-shaped. You don't have to strain yourself, I'm perfectly comfortable with how I look."

"And let me tell, in my time, you look great," he patted her shoulder. "Trust me, I'm not trying at all. It's very easy to compliment a pretty lady."

"Perhaps it's easy, but it does make the married lady wonder what the young man is after."

"Can't a young man give compliments without wanting something?"

The banter was distracting him from the aches of his body, which was a good thing in his mind. It was easier to take steps that way, to not think about how close or far he was from his home.

Good company had always made for better walks, even off a battlefield, in Vastra's experience. "He can, though he usually doesn't. And don't try to argue the point, you know it's true."

"It's very true, but said young gentleman is also taken. He doesn't think it's very polite to ask for more than flattery when one is in a monogamous relationship," he pointed out. He might have flitted from one to the other before, but once committed he was committed. He wouldn't betray Spock that way.
