[Shikamaru stops, meeting that with a blank look and stretched silence. That's some misplaced faith you have.

And then he starts again.]

Honestly, I never thought about it before. [Now that he has, running the calculations he figures he'd need at least two lifetimes, maybe half less if the first went well.] Not that it matters. Changing how the Malnosso handle their own affairs is contrary to what really needs to be done.

Yeah, probably. The whole view this world has going needs to be changed.

As someone who stands a better chance than the rest to leave it someday, I don't care to have a stake in that argument. The first priority is preventing more people from coming to this world. The second is determining a method to evacuate anyone who can leave it.

Ideally you wouldn't consider the rest until after those objectives were accomplished. The Cultists make that impossible, of course, but if you could pull it off it would their methods wrong.

[ You know those are the sort of objectives he was expecting to hear... but honestly, Masaomi connects the both of those are being things which are directly related to the Malnosso's methodology. After all, they have bee trying to evacuate people for years, as the premise of the enclosures... right? Maybe? ]

But that's the view people needed to accept. But then, we're both little kids who are pawing at a world we don't get. Who even gets people here?

Hah. That's annoying, right? That all these people are so cagey about so little. Like damn, what's the big secret.

[ His tone shifts here, forcing a laugh and waving a hand. He's showing that he's trying to lighten the mood here ]

Shit, the way they act about it I'm not sure I want to know. Sounds like a bad manga.

[Naturally this would be the point where an animal squeaks loudly not far off in the woods.]

[NOT EXACTLY SURE HIMSELF, Shikamaru cups his hand over the flashlight so as to not draw attention to themselves. It didn't sound like a Shift Hunter at least, so maybe it's something harmless that'll pass.

A few seconds later there's some rustling and if you look to the sky you can make out a large bird taking off away from them with something in its talons.]

No such advice from that one.

[ He also looks around in those few tense seconds before, oh. Huh. ]

Wow though, you don't see birds that big usually.

We had some in Konoha. Raptors, or sometimes carrion feeders.

[He uncups the light and shines it about, trying to determine which way the bird came from.]

That looked like an eagle to me, so I'm ruling out a carrion bird.

[ He could be wrong though, what does he know. He makes to get his own light source ]

I'm pretty sure that was a rabbit it was flying off with, but even eagles take advantage of carrion.

[They haven't walked far enough to find what he's looking for, but this is a good way to help pinpoint what direction he needs to go in.]

[ Oh, oh, right. The corpses that had been so unceremoniously eaten in the city. That somehow didn't promptly vanish. He was looking out for other corpses they couldn't have known were there, of course. ]

Well, it went east, and I'm pretty sure it came from there too.

[ Maybe, probably. It's dark. ]

East is that way, right? [ Points ] And I'm pretty sure it came from that way. I saw a shadow move there.

All right. [He seems pretty opnely trusting of that, as he then turns west.] If you say so.
