What: Wanderer/Melanie is back from her kidnapping.

Summary: Wanda comes back from her kidnapping, except it's not Wanda in control. It's Melanie.

Melanie climbed the stairs of the community building towards her room. She was slightly out of breath from running, and enjoying the control over her body again. It felt like she had been freed from a prison, and she hoped that things would stay this way. The only thing that worried her was that Wanda seemed to be in bad shape. The Soul had not spoken at all since Melanie had gained back control, and she felt so weak. As much as Mel enjoyed having her body returned to her, she was still worried about Wanda, the soul that had become a friend to her.

She stopped in front of the apartment where she was staying, and spoke to the silent Soul.

Wanda?

She paused, listening for a response. Just like the entire trip back to the apartment, there was no answer.

Edward had heard the girl once she had come within range. He was surprised to find out that Wanda was running while her thoughts sounded so weak. He hadn't been particularly worried about the kidnapping, though. Her return could only be so bad. Still, he had kept an eye out in the journal for her and had been listening just in case.

It wasn't until after he saw her that Edward realized what was wrong. He had thought the thoughts of having their body back was referring to being freed from the Malnosso, and that Wanda still hadn't given up on ignoring Melanie. He hadn't thought that Wanda wasn't in control at all.

"Welcome back." Double meanings.

Mel will find that Edward had placed himself behind her and he will be acting as if he were there the entire time.

Melanie spun around the instant she heard him as her own survival instincts came rushing in. Instincts that she hadn't felt since Wanda had taken her body. She had always been much more aware of them then the Soul, and it showed as her movements and stance remained cautious of Edward. Her instincts were telling her danger, but she knew how to control them. To keep from listening to them if she wanted to.

Her eyes showed her annoyance and dislike of Edward's presence.

"What do you want?"

He didn't need that glare to show her dislike for him. He didn't even need to hear her mind for that. It was practically radiating off Melanie as she spun around to meet his gaze. He raised an eyebrow at her as if it were obvious and, despite himself, he was grinning at her cautious stance. Edward didn't see those as often as he should.

" I was merely greeting you at your return."

But he wasn't looking at her when he said it, as he was busy scanning her up and down once. He didn't see any life-threatening injuries, which pleased him, probably more than it should of. These days he was beginning to get desperate for some good news.

There was hardly a pause before he continued, using his red-orange eyes to his advantage as he smiled at her.

"The tone is hardly appreciated, not to mention unnecessary. I was going to ask you if you needed any help."

Melanie remained the way she was, and her cautious stance said that she was prepared for whatever situation may come. Whether it be running, or fighting, she was ready.

"I don't need anyone's help. I've survived in worse places and situations then this, and it's even easier to do that when Wanda's not the one in control."

And Edward completely ignored that reply, focusing again on Melanie's stance. He sighed as if it actually bothered him.

" As much as I love to see an appropriate reaction in someone, I have to tell you that it really isn't needed. If I had some random, undying urge to attack you, I would have done so already."

And I would be done long before you even realized what hit you.

"If I thought it were needed then I would have been out of here by now."

" Well then it's rather pointless for you to be standing there like that."

"I can't help it. My body is too used to listening to my instincts. It's just something that happens when you've been surviving in hell as long as I have."

He shrugged, still thinking that it was in response to him anyway. He was dangerous, after all, and it was good for her to listen to those instincts. He wouldn't be surprised if it was the reason she was still alive at all.

" What are you going to do about Wanderer?"

She's silent for a few minutes before responding to his question.

"There's nothing I can do but wait until she recovers. After all, there aren't any Healer's around here. What else is there to do?"

" Will you be disappointed if she doesn't come back?"

"There's one thing that Soul's definitely have right about humans, and that's that we're selfish creatures. So yes, I would be disappointed if she didn't come back. Especially after everything she's done for the few humans left in my world. She doesn't deserve to disappear."

" That doesn't sound selfish to me."

He would know. He was the most selfish thing of all, right?

"I wonder if you'd be saying that if I told you I'd be willing to put her inside another human. Take someone elses life away to save hers."

Edward is very torn, here. Would he not do the same for Bella? Or Alice, Carlilse, even Rosalie?

" I...think I can understand that."

At least that would only be one person. And this girl would do it humanely. The person could die, without being robbed of anything but their life. They might even be lucky, in a way...

She pauses for a moment, not thinking of anything in particular before changing the subject.

"About Wanda. You should be kinder towards her. She's dealt with a lot because of what she is, but I'm sure you already know that, but she hasn't done anything to deserve it."

Melanie had become very stern and serious with her words. They were words that she had been wanting to say out loud for awhile, and now she was glad to be getting the chance.

Edward looks a bit insulted at that.

" I treat Wanda as I would anyone else."

Melanie rolls her eyes at that as the word liar runs through her head.

"I can tell you don't like her too much, and so can she. Wanda's just too nice to say anything about it. I'm just telling you that if you don't like her, just stay away from her."

Before Melanie got the chance to add more to her speech, Wanda forced out of thought. She had obviously been listening to the conversation, but despite everything, her thought was very quiet and weak, as if she were using all of her strength just to accomplish it.

Mel....stop....please.

Melanie froze as she heard the thought in her own head, and a sort of happiness went through her. She was glad that Wanda could speak, but she hid the emotion well.

"Don't talk, Wanda. It'll only make you weaker."

There was no answer to Melanie's words, but Wanda's presence was still there, and that comforted her.

"At least that's one problem solved."

"Yeah, but who knows how long it will take her to recover. I've never heard of something like this ever happening to a Soul."

" This is a strange place."
