The day was turning to evening. Most would be indoors preparing for dinner. Three others, however, were instead trekking to the edge of the woods in an attempt to break through and confront the Malnosso. The chances of it succeeding may have been slim, but two of them were used to taking the risk. They had done it before and weren't afraid to do it again, not when they knew that if anyone ever was successful at defeating them, they had nothing to go back to. They had been displaced after death. The third, he was accustomed to the battlefield.

Two stopped and forked off in separate directions. The shortest one, a child, continued forward and was left standing alone. Since the barrier had moved, Nataku's powers had returned. There being no need for his service in any wars left him oblivious to them ever being gone or how they were still weakened. The people he had enjoyed spending the most time with, Nill and Rikku, had both disappeared. Their game hadn't had a chance to start. Killua liked games. Maybe he would find the candy trophy Rikku and he had created as a prize.

A few moments were spared for a flicker of thoughts to those he'd met. Then, he raised a hand to summon his sword. That boy, the first person he considered a friend, would he meet him again? People came back from the dead here, so maybe...

The air began to gently swirl around him. With both hands gripping it, the heavenly blade came down to smash against the ground. The earth cracked, branching outward, leaving a fractured surface and soil upturned . Nataku didn't see the extent of the damage. A smile ghosted his lips and then he was falling, his own sword run through him.

The two waited, watching for the ones who would come to retrieve the body, partially hidden behind the brush. It felt like forever with their comrade already dead and bleeding. Then they saw them, the caped, metal beings stepping out from seemingly out of nowhere. When they were near enough to the corpse, a chain of burning beads was tossed out. The glass broke for the smoke to come out. There was still a possibility that it could dull their sensors' ability for visibility.

There was a snap of chocolate from the blond before the rest was tossed aside. Fire sprang forward a split second later, and Mello stepped out. Matt followed suit from the opposite side. Both having better control of their Filial magic with B's help, they were aiming for the weak spots – joints and hopefully landing a hit on their hidden control hatches. Lightning arched into the fray, joining the blond's alternating fire and water. They raced to try to go past the droids and through the opening. No one wanted to be held captive. If B was anywhere to witness what was happening, the three didn't know he had followed.

The blond and redhead didn't get far when they fell as well, surrounded and back-to-back. What they missed was how they had dragged down one of the Malnosso's toys with them. There was some luck on their side after all. Hit by a combination of water and lightning, it short-circuited, convulsed, and stilled. The Malnosso might want to check their toys for defects. Even luckier, the ones left standing were too preoccupied with removing their dead bodies from the scene to pick up the fallen droid before there was the sound of footsteps in the distance. The defeated droid would be the one reward among the broken earth, charred and wet grass, and the bloodstains.

What Nataku did may be considered a selfless act. It wasn't a selfless act for the other two. They were just going down fighting to take out an enemy. What it looked like depended on who the observer was.

The lights and sounds of a fight at the barrier brought Gaara...to see the aftermath of a fight and one of the things that had come when he was young. He bent down by it, but could tell that it would be too heavy for him with his power cut so much.

Lights and sounds weren't the only things that brought Edward to the scene. There was blood... and everything was taking place near the barrier. Part of what brought him there was the small hope he had been clinging to that he would be able to find Bella. That hope, of course, was dropped as soon as he approached. There was nothing that would help him here.

He slowed his run to a typical human-paced walk once he realized the presence of another man. Edward added him to the list of silent minds. He was looking at an object that was completely unfamiliar to the vampire. Of course, he wouldn't know if the man in front of him knew what said object was because the only things he could hear were the crunching of his footsteps and breathing. More frustration.
