Summary: Sophie is having her fourth birthday! Come and share in her special day, and have lots of cake while you're at it. ♥
Rating: It's a four-year-old's birthday party. If this goes above G, Grune will come and kick your ass all the way around Luceti. :|
[Children's birthday parties aren't exactly common in Luceti, but this one has turned out pretty well despite the lack of practice. The gang at House 34 and their friends put a great deal of effort into making sure Sophie got the celebration she deserves, and it shows.

The rec centre is decorated up with lots of bright colours, thanks to Rapunzel's creativity and Mac's manual labour, with some interactivity to them, too. The tablecloths are made of giant sheets of paper with colouring supplies provided for the young and the young at heart. There are possibly a few more flowers around than most four-year-olds would have at their parties, but discouraging Grune is hard to do, and they do look nice.

There are games, too--mostly the sorts of things that would be appropriate for a four-year-old, like Pin the Tail on the Donkey or Pass the Parcel. There are balloons about to bat about and balls and blocks to play with, and of course no one would ever steal any spare balloons and make water balloons out of them. Of course not. :|

The food is awesome, of course, and definitely falls on the sweet side of things. In addition to Ryoji's cookies, there's lots to eat--the baking-inclined of House 34 went all out. And of course, there's a giant cake with tons of icing and the message "HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SOPHIE!"

As for the birthday girl herself--well, she's looking pretty chill. But anyone who knows her well or looks carefully can tell she's definitely engaged and having a good time...even if she's not the most demonstrative of kids. Luceti, you done good.]

[A bit distractedly:] I hope so. [It's not always exactly easy to tell with Sophie.... But then she gives the mental equivalent of a shrug. It'll work out.] Well, probably. There is enough to be exciting around here.

Yes, there are lots of nice things to do and good things to eat. And presents, too!

[Everyone was so generous!]

[Fenimore grins a little.]

Well, she should appreciate the presents, at least.

I think she will, too! She likes getting presents.

[Then again, what four year old doesn't?]

[Fenimore laughs.]

Show me someone who doesn't.

[As always, Grune takes this completely at face value, and she starts looking around the party.]

Hmm.... Let me see.

... [A chuckle.] Grune, I didn't mean for you to actually find someone. It's just an expression.

Oh. All right. [She abandons that train of thought and picks up another one in its place.]

Sophie is growing up very fast, isn't she?

[Fenimore kind of wonders if Grune really understands that it's an expression. She suspects the exact same thing would happen if it was used again. Oh well.]

...Yeah. When I got here, she was just [uhhhh] one. And now, in a couple of years, she'll be ready for school.

[...Wow she feels old right now.]

[Grune, by contrast, just feels excited.]

Raine said that she could come this year if she wanted to.

That's kind of...early, I think. [Though she doesn't sound entirely sure, given she thought the same thing about punching lessons earlier.]

I think she'll be fine waiting a year or two. She'll have plenty of time to learn what she needs. [Reading, writing, and arithmatic. What do you mean, upper level science, math, critical analysis, music....]

[And Grune is just going to go along with Fenimore's decision, because that's how she rolls.]

All right. We can help her out at home for a little longer.

[Excellent. Bend to her will, minion! Er, that is: she nods!]

She can't learn everything from school, anyway. I mean, the teachers aren't even from the same world, for one thing.

Oh, but that's all right. I'm sure they're all very smart.

[She has no idea who they actually are, but...they have to be smart to be teachers, right?]

I'm sure they are, too, but no one can know everything.

Hmm.... Yes, that's true.

[Rather obviously.]

And, anyway, it's better for her to take this time to be a kid. Once you start working, you can't really stop.

[A moment's pause.]

Or, at least, that's how it is for most people. [Although if she has to look after Grune's garden while she's off spelunking, she might retract the view that Grune doesn't work.]

[Grune hasn't thought that far in advance about her garden ~~and neither had I~~ and so very likely Fenimore is getting stuck with that work. Sorry, Fen.]

Oh, but it's still important to take lots of breaks to do nice things.

[Not...quite what she meant, Grune.]

Having breaks is a lot different from having your entire life be a break. ...Like what happens with kids. [And Grune, from her perspective.]

Oh, is it?

It's not that the breaks are bad, but...trust me on this one. It's different.

All right. I trust you, Fenimore.

[Smile!]

It's not like that's much of a surprise. ["Since you trust everyone." Once again, Fenimore takes advantage of things going over Grune's head.] But...thanks, I guess.

[And she takes a glance around the room, which fails completely due to her height.] I probably should go check in on Sophie, though. Did you see her recently?

[She is clearly thinking of something else if she's asking Grune this and expecting an answer.]

[Extremely clearly, yes, because....]

Hmm.... I wonder.

[A sigh, but a fond one.]

Never mind. I'll find her myself. I'll see you later, Grune.
