[Cliff was already awake when the sirens rang-- rather, he hadn't actually slept yet. Being on the move always kept him alert and awake, and had given him a tendency to sleep lightly in general. Unlike most of the draftees, he was able to keep his head in the crush and the chaos that followed.

There was only a flicker of concern for his friends. They had been separated, but he knew their skills. The three of them could meet up later, when they had a chance to breathe. With all of the non-combatants around, he kept his focus on who and what was immediately around him.

Only one thing caught him off guard.]

Rei?

[His mind was made up in a second. Mages shouldn't travel alone.]

[Rei wasn't particularly worried, she'd kept to the back and stayed out of the way, with her bow slung over a shoulder. And she intended to keep it that way, until she could find a safe spot to transform at least. But Cliff's voice reminded her that she wasn't alone. And oh, he was talking to her. Well, he was nice enough, and backup wasn't bad, it'd give her more freedom to move about anyway.]

Cliff-san. Are you here to reinforce my position?

[The backup worked both ways in his book. Long range and close range attacks both had their advantages when used in tandem, and there was always a use for someone with magic in the middle of a melee. Having gotten a taste of her skills in the Dome, he wasn't too concerned for her safety. With the right resources, she could handle it pretty well-- and, having another pair of eyes was always good.]

Only if you've also got my back.

[Rei nods, hefting her bow back over her shoulder and flexing her fingers. Clearly he wanted magical help, and that was something she was willing to provide. Cliff wasn't such a bad guy, after all, and she had the sense that he'd do whatever it took to keep her from getting hurt. Having a fighter, well...that was just a sound strategy]

Of course. Two is more effective than one.

Awesome!

[He grinned. Drafted or not because of a war that he had no part of, a fight was still a fight. This was far better than the stillness that had kept him on alert.]

Find a nest or a cover or something. I'll keep 'em off ya as you work your stuff.

Right!

[Rei scrambled up onto a bit of decking, setting down her bow and getting herself mentally ready.]

Enemies! Be careful, Cliff-san!

Got it!

[And he threw himself into the fray without second thought, with a two-fold goal. Take out as many of these guys as he could, and keep Rei safe.]

[Rei smiled as she watched Cliff charge into the cultists and threw up her hands, laughing as released a jet of flame.]

FUEGO!

[Harry would be proud of that, she thought. The fireball struck enemies around Cliff, keeping them from surrounding him. It wasn't Mars, but she'd been a good student. She could stand on her own in a fight without her Other self now.]

[The best partner to have was one that wasn't afraid of battle. There was no hesitation, second guesses, or startled reactions that could endanger everyone on the field...and Cliff just had more fun with someone like that at his back.

The blast of fire was hardly a surprise, although it was different from before.]

New magic?

[Uppercut. He liked to chat sometimes.]

No, just a new name.

[To honor a friend.]

FUEGO!

[More fire, and she laughs happily, glad to be doing something again.]

I dunno what it means, but it's sweet!

[Wings. Communicators. Both seemed to have their limits in this place, but details. Cliff grabbed a particularly eager foe as it tried to make a dash for Rei and thrust them back into the fray.

Nothing was going to get past him.]

Glad you approve.

[She'll mutter a few more words, this time adding flames to Cliff's hands.]

Go to town.

Yes ma'am!

[He was as eager as a kid half his age at the prospect of this battle-- and the magically induced flames that boosetd his attacks were a nice kick to his blows. He drove forward with a Sphere of Might for an immediate opening before he plowed ahead, knocking enemies out of the way for speed and efficiency instead of taking the time to disable them. Speed was by no means his skill, beyond his charges, but that meant he could provide more cover for Rei as they maneuvered.]

[Rei watched him work, leveling her bow from the nest she was in, watching him work. It was really impressive, a lot like something Makoto might do, and she's watching him pretty closely. If an enemy gets too near his back or sides, they'll find themselves with an arrow in them of course.

But Rei's not really watching her own flanks...]

[The assists were more than welcome in hostile mob of wings and bodies that swarmed the garrison, and Cliff was glad to have found a partner in this fight. Working in smaller teams had spoiled him, he knew, but it had taught him the meaning of interdependence. Rely on your comrades, but keep an eye on them.

He checked over at her when he had a second to breathe, and his reaction was immediate:]

Rei! Get down!

[He leapt into the air and unleashed his fury on the encroaching goons.]

Hammer of Might!

[When he shouts, she's already dropping to the ground. Working with the Senshi, and her time in Luceti had taught her that being part of a team meant trusting teammates. And that meant listening. And not failing.

The goons are definitely taken off guard, but one of them manages to evade, still coming at the girl...]

[Cliff grunted in irritation when he caught sight of the one he missed, and met him with an unforgiving sidekick.]

Little sloppy there.

[Says the guy who's not watching his own back.]

Isn't it your job to keep them off me?

[Hmmph]

Hah! True.

[He whirled around to face the enemy in full, mentally taking tab of the numbers and the large wings that were in plain sight. If he remembered correctly...]

How much firepower do you have?

Enough. It's early yet. Are you bored already?

I just like knowin--

[He had bantered for too long and barely managed to block an incoming attack on instinct alone.]

--heh. Looks like I got sloppy.

[It was said with a laugh. Kids like these...

He broke off the guard long enough to plant a foot in the enemy's chest, punting them away just so he could get a moment to breathe. There wasn't much time; they moved quickly.]

Permission to grab you?

[He had an idea, but he didn't want to overstep any bounds on a teenage girl.]

Watch your hands then.

[She'll relent to that, it's battle after all and he's her guard.]

Of course! No worries.

[He swiftly scooped her up around the waist-- careful about where he put his hands, and grinned.]

You'll wanna hang on.

[With that he charged toward the enemy and, at the last moment, leapt up and over the worst of what was going after them. He landed gently, with a well practiced ease, and set her down before taking off again...with a gesture for her to follow.]

You wanted to get to town, right?
