The battle was still really crazy, Bolin had taken a shortcut to get to another area of the district that needed support. Earth bending was good for creating temporary barriers. He's been trying not to think too much on the chaos and the fact that there are people dying, but rounding a corner to the smell of burning meat sends a rush of nausea through him.

He was not going to be hungry for a while. It took him a moment to spot Sokka disposing of the bodies and he froze as he figured out that he had been responsible. "Sokka...?"

Sokka didn't look up, he just kept dragging another body out of the circle and towards a perfect circular pit he had created with alchemy. It was best when he could keep them out of sight so the next batch wouldn't realize something was suspicious.

"Good timing. I need you to cover this pit once I get the last one in there."

He was no master alchemist yet. He could create a pit, but he lacked the skill to cover it with a rocky surface again. He'd been settling with a tarp.

He swallowed again, trying not to think about how burnt up they were. Trying not to think at all in general was good, except he still felt sick to his stomach. Except, looking in the pit that was a lot of bodies.

"Um, right." Bolin paused, and brought his hands up. It was the middle of a war and he was fidgeting as Sokka got rid of dead bodies that looked like a fire bender had gotten enthusiastic. "Are you okay? This is kinda..."

Sokka kicked the last one in the pit and gestured for Bolin to do his duty. There was a twinge of impatience on his face at the way Bolin was acting.

"Pull it together, Bo. This is war, not probending. There's no ring to knock them out of. If you don't put them down permanently, they'll just get back up to hurt someone else."

"I know!" Bolin looked away from the bodies, trying to remind himself that they were the bad guys. If Sokka didn't do this then they might hurt someone from Luceti. "I know..."

He got into a earth bending stance and with a sharp gesture the pit was covered again, the work was rough but it hid them away at least.

After the ground was covered, Sokka nodded in approval, dusted his hands of the affair, and turned back to Bolin. The poor kid looked upset. So did Korra. Neither of them were handling this well. Maybe even worse than he and Katara's first time. They'd already experienced war, even if it was different than this.

"Have you killed one of them yet?"

Bolin shook his head. "Not yet. I mean, not directly I guess." The barriers he'd made, they'd given other draftees chance to fight back and drive back the cultists.

"I just- I know it's a war but fighting the Equalists wasn't like this."

"These guys aren't fighting for a cause to put you on the same level, Bolin. They don't want to take over the world. They want to kill you. Over and over until you stop coming back. Show them mercy and they'll pay you back by killing you."

His tone was harsh, commanding, and remorseless. This wasn't the place for anyone, no matter how young they were, to start second guessing what they were doing.

"There's a difference between fighting back and being as bad as they are!" He snapped. "The stuff they're doing, it's bad but... doing this." He pointed to the pit he'd just helped cover.

"That makes you just as bad as them."

Sokka took a step towards Bolin and glared.

"If you really think that, then you don't know a damn thing about these guys. I killed them because someone had to do it. There's a lot of people who don't have the stomach for it."
