Eh? You sure you don't want any help? It's not like I can't do anything...

[He shrugs.] Be my guest.

[And he'll head for the door to Room 10, motioning for her to follow, hooking a look over his shoulder.] You cook much? [Sure, it's just sandwiches, but he wants that chicken on his and it's still raw.]

[She'll catch up to him.]

Yeah, I cook! I mean, my friend Himemiya did all of our cooking back home. Since she isn't here, I've had to learn more than I already did by myself. It never comes out right, though. I mean, it tastes fine, but not...

[Correct.]

[A pause, because it's easy to hear how much she misses her friend, the same one she had mentioned a number of times before. But what can he say to help that?]

...I'm more used to helping to cook for a couple hundred other soldiers, so just cooking for one or two people at a time is pretty new to me.

[They've reached the door, and he's pushing it open.]

Yeah... I guess it would be. That's right, I keep forgetting how different your life is compared to mine.

But, you know. Maybe I can help you adjust to only cooking for a couple of people, right?

I think I'm doing an alright job. It's not like you can accidentally cook fifty pounds of potatoes or something like that.

I... think there would be a problem if you accidentally did something like that. [She laughs.] And I'm glad to hear that you won't say no.

[Not that she would have taken "no" for an answer anyway, she's perfectly capable of doing things herself. When Himemiya did things for her, well... that was different. Once they're inside, Utena looks around.]

Ah... this is a nice place!

It looks the same as every other apartment in this building. [He shrugs. Order and attention to detail were drilled into him and Marco during training, so they make an effort to keep it tidy enough. ~~It certainly wouldn't pass Captain Levi's inspection, though.~~

Walking over to the unit of cupboards, he laughs a little as he thinks of something.]

If that did happen, I know someone who would kill to be here for it. One of my classmates - loves eating more than anything... We called her Potato Girl for the longest time, back in training, because she had the nerve to steal a potato from the store room and start eating it when we were supposed to be lined up for inspection on the first day.

[She'll follow him over, and she laughs a little bit more when he tells her that story.]

Wow, really? Jeez. Did she get in trouble over it, or anything like that? [Though in a way, Utena has to admire it. She's never been one to follow rules herself. But still, with how different things are between their worlds, she can't admire it too much.]

Are you kidding me? She didn't get dinner that night, and she had to run laps until she dropped from exhaustion.

[He takes out a loaf of bread and hands it to her, before striding over to the fridge - just one of many helpful inventions he would have never known if he didn't end up in Luceti.]

Sheesh! Even if times are hard, that's a little bit of overkill. [She takes the loaf from him.] I mean, don't you think so?

She deserved it just for being an idiot. If you're going to sneak food, at least wait until you're back in the dorms before you eat it.

[Rummaging through the fridge, he produces a block of cheese and a package of chicken breasts - he still thinks that it's so weird to sell it all divided up already, but it is convenient.]

Yeah, that's true. She should have waited before just eating it in front of everyone.

[She looks over at him.]

[He turns away from the fridge, holding the door open with his body.]

Do you want anything else for your sandwich? [Meat. Cheese. Bread. He has the basics, but he hasn't moved onto more advanced sandwich-making.]

Hm... do you have any eggs? [She might as well ask before assuming.]

Eggs? We have 'em, but...on a sandwich?

Well, yeah! You cook the eggs the way you prefer them, and then you put them on the sandwich. I'm... guessing they don't do that where you're from, huh?

Never seen anyone do that before. But if you say it's good... [He'll hand her the cheese and turn to grab the carton of eggs from the fridge.]

I hope you'll like it. [She'll take the cheese from him.] But hey, you might as well take advantage of as many new experiences while you're here anyway! New ways of eating food included.

All this pre-sliced stuff - bread and meat and whatever else you can get already nicely cut up for you - is new enough to me.

[He shuts the fridge door, and makes to exit the apartment again.]

I see...

[She's quick to follow him.]

When you put it like that, it really makes me think of all the little things that maybe I take for granted. Probably people from other worlds, too. You know, Jean... I don't think I really paid enough attention to the differences of everyone's worlds until you told me about yours. Maybe I should have before that. Maybe...

[Maybe... there's so much more that she isn't seeing.

A faint memory of the past--the end of the world, a tormented girl, so many swords, a promise to become a prince and save the girl--manages to slip through for just a moment. However, as quickly as it came, it's gone again.]

...maybe.

...Hey. You okay, Utena? [His hand hesitates on the doorknob, and he turns to face her fully.]

Look...the food situation isn't that bad. It's not as bad as it was, anyway...and being in the military, I'm fed with tax dollars. [He's downplaying it for her right now. That's what he needs to do.]

And the rest of it... [The walls. The titans. So many people dying - friends and comrades and nameless masses, who all end up as bones indistinguishable from one another.] What difference does it make, if you pay attention to it or not? There's nothing you can do about it from here, for my world or anyone else's. It's not your obligation to care...it's easier to just not think about any of it, to be honest.

[Not for him, though.]

How can I not care? You're my friend! Don't friends try to help each other?! Don't they care about each other?! It might not be my obligation to care, but it's something I should do anyway! Even with every other world aside, the fact that I can't help my friends, any of you--

[She looks down at her ring. Well, as well as she can while holding the food. What kind of prince is she, if she can't help people?]

I... [Sigh.] Sorry. I didn't mean to just--blow up like that. But while we're here, during the drafts... I can at least help then, right?
