[Well, Souji isn't the only person browsing the item store. Saori is meandering through there too, looking for gifts for her own friends. And as it just so happens she finds herself looking at the same group of stuffed animals as Souji.]

[Stuffed animals are wonderful gifts, Saori. Souji is v. pleased you understand this. He's perusing them for a few moments before he notices that someone has joined him and he looks over, noting her familiar features. He smiles and turns to her, holding out a stuffed pig and a stuffed raccoon dog.]

Can I ask you? Which do you think is cuter?

[Saori blinks at the question, and at him. Trying to place him is strange. She...remembers the voice, but not the name or face. And there are many less sparkles this time. And scales.]

The raccoon dog. Why?

Because.

[He hands her the raccoon dog with a wide smile.]

This one is for you. So, who are you shopping for?

[She blinks in surprise and accepts the little plushie with a laugh!]

Well, thank you! I...suppose I am shopping for you now. Though, I'm afraid I don't know your name. Or if I have, I've forgotten it.

[Souji laughed and shook his head.] I remember seeing you at Rei-san's birthday party, but I don't believe we were formally introduced. I was the lizard thing.

[He bows his head.] But my name is Okita Souji.

[Saori quirks her head at the mention of a party, because she assumes that's Rei, the young miko. Who...she does not know and never will know because of reasons, but she does remember Okita Souji...the...dinosaur.]

Ah~! Forgive me, I didn't recognize you...without the scales and teeth. I am glad to meet you again. For the third time now.

[Souji laughed and nodded.]

So which do you think is better? Scales and teeth or long hair and these? [He holds up his very human hands and smiles.]

Oh I think you look lovely as both, honestly. But there are certain merits to having thumbs. And you must admit it's awfully hard to hug someone or kiss someone with teeth and claws.

[She holds up her fingers, and ever so briefly lets their shape shift to their truest form. Elongated, claw-like, and tinged a bluish grey.]

There's a reason I wear this shape. I prefer being able to hug. The scales though...that's a different story. I'm fairly sure skin is nicer than scales.

I'm sure someone somewhere must manage. [He almost laughed, but then noticed the change in her hands - now that was interesting. He tilts his head and looks at her a little more closely.]

You're a spirit, aren't you? Oh! You must be the goddess I hear about - the one for wind and storms?

[Says the creeper who stalks everyone in the village.]

[She lowers the hand, and strokes the head of the little plushie before she answers, her expression thoughtful.]

Yes, and yes. And you are the Shinsengumi captain, are you not?

Yes - or I was.

[His smile is a little dimmer than before, looking at the pig plushie before putting it back on the shelf.]

I can't really call myself one here when there is no Shinsengumi of which to speak.

[Her smile grows slightly dimmer as well, and she steps over next to him, putting a hand on his shoulder.]

For what it's worth, my kind always looked with favor you and your men. We were not permitted to act on your behalf, but...in my world at least, we did what we could.

[Her fingers tighten slightly, squeezing very gently.]

But you are right. Organizations hold little meaning here. It's the people we surround ourselves with that matter in this place. Now, tell me Souji-san, do you like animals? Or does another gift have your eye?

[He smiled at the reassurance, but didn't answer. There was nothing that could be done for his comrades in her world either. It seemed in every single world ever, they were doomed to die.

He turned his attention instead to the animals in front of him and picked up the pig again.]

Animals are wonderful. We have five at the moment in the house, but I was just looking at these for fun today. You were here looking for someone else first, weren't you? What do they like?

[She understands the silence. There's no need to say more, not now or ever.]

It sounds like a busy house, and not that different from mine.

[Shaking her head, she eyes the little pig.]

Well, that depends, Souji-san. What do you like? My attention is now on you, so let's find you something to make you smile even more. Vegeta and Yuuna can wait.

[And she realizes something.]

And since I failed to introduce myself, my name is Kimura Saori, the Daughter of Wind and Rain.

[Vegeta? All thoughts derailed, he looks at her for a moment.]

Kimura-san knows the grumpy spiky-haired man?

[Saori's face softens, and a smile forms on her lips.]

I know him very well, Souji-san.

[Clearly there's no small measure of affection for him, too.]

You know him too?

[Souji's face doesn't show the same affection as he twirls the stuffed animal in his hands.]

Mmhmm....He said he was going to pull me apart the last time we spoke. Or, the second to last. The last time I saw him was at the battle dome practising his swordsmanship. I commented that he was gripping his sword too tightly and he didn't take it very well.

[Saori's eyebrow climbs.]

He...is easily frustrated as well as rude at times. And he's not taking my
lessons on swordsmanship as well as he should. He's still a beginner, but he won't admit it to anyone he doesn't know well. He's something of a fist-fighter, like all the people from his world, and I've told him time and time again that he needs to loosen himself up before practicing with his sword.

[She looks down at the stuffed raccoon dog in her hands.]

But he won't actually pull you apart. He likes to talk like that, but he won't do anything unless you try to hurt him or his friends and family.

Aaah, so you are his teacher. [It would explain why Vegeta had been so defensive of her and her experience. Although Souji is always wary around supernatural beings after his experiences with them, he can't deny that Saori had to make for a good teacher having lived as long as she had.]

Maybe you should hit him. He seems to respond to violence.

I am she, yes. I suggested it to him some months ago, because he does need to learn something of the art. And he's a passable student when his temper doesn't cause him problems.

[She gives Souji her warmest smile at the suggestion.]

And he responds well to teasing too, from the right source. Hitting him will just make him dig in his heels.

[Souji laughed at the idea of Vegeta's temper not getting the best of him at any time.] When doesn't his temper cause him problems? There's a reason why he's the Grumpy Spiky Bear.

He doesn't know how connected I am to his other friends here, I think - which is fine with me. I prefer to be unknown. [Souji set the pig back on the shelf and reached up to a higher shelf, pulling a blue and grey squid down. The shape of the body reminded him of Vegeta's hair.] Do you think he'd appreciate the joke in this?

Oh, I don't know. He can be calm, you just have to know how to prod him. And I can understand that sentiment. I'm honestly surprised you've heard of me.

[She looks at the squid and smiles fondly.] And to be perfectly honest, I think he might consider it food. Or find it mildly disturbing. His culture seems very, very strange.

He just mentioned his teacher having over 700 years of experience - there aren't many here who could boost such a long life without being something not human.

[Souji held the squid out at arm's length, turning it in his hands.]

Well, I think it's perfect then. Either he'll try to eat it or be weirded out by it, and it'll be amusing either way. I just have to find a way to get it to him now.

Well he's wrong in that regard. I'm not quite so old yet.

[She reaches up on the shelf and picks up another toy, a little stuffed ape and looks it over.]

He's usually at the Battle Dome, though I've got plans with him this evening for dinner. I could deliver it, if you like.
