Who: [Bad username or site: herobydefault title= @ livejournal.com] and [Bad username or site: wingenvy title= @ livejournal.com]
What: Lots of tl;dr on Cloud's part, probably.
When: Right now. :|
Where: In the tunnels
Summary: Cloud's been waiting for Zack to get back.
Rating: PG?
He'd been down there for a day and a half, now. The first night had been horrible; Cloud had stayed away from the labs, but lack of sleep had brought out the worst of his imagination and soon he'd begun to peek into each one to make sure Zack wasn't being tormented inside of them. Thirty or so rooms afterward, Cloud convinced himself that it was pointless and returned to the barrier, slumping against the wall with his journal open beside him and wondering if he could sleep sitting up.
Turned out that he could.
The sleep was good; he needed to be as strong as possible for when Zack showed up, no matter what condition he could be in. So he'd tried to sleep again, though the second attempt wasn't as successful as the first. He ate a few cookies Tifa had given him, and he couldn't help but grin then. A backpack, staying in a scary place with a box of cookies to keep him company. What a kid. The weight of what was happening as he waited wasn't lost on him, but the smile made him feel a little better, at least.
Zack would be back soon. He'd be all right, and they would go home, Cloud would sleep and eat and everything would be okay.
Everything would be fine.

He noticed when a body was suddenly dumped on the floor at his feet, though. Jolting awake with a sound of alarm, Cloud glanced up to see the retreating back of one of the droids and instinctively reached at his back for First Tsurugi...only to remember it wasn't there. In it's place was a nondescript broadsword that he could lift while down in the tunnels. As for the form at his feet-
"Zack-!" Cloud scrambled to roll Zack over and tug him up into his arms, searching frantically for any injuries. He started to check his eyes for that mako glow, but remembered that even if it had worked, it wouldn't show until they were out of the tunnel system. "Zack," Cloud murmured this time, and gave his friend a little shake.
He didn't move.
Swallowing down a sudden lump of fear Cloud bent, pressed an ear to his chest; he was drawing breath, and his heart was beating. So he was alive but very, very unconscious. Alive was good, unresponsive was bad. Cloud thought to climb to his feet and pull Zack onto his back to take him over to the ladder -he had no idea how he'd get them both up, but he'd figure that out then- but he realized that he didn't want to move yet. Not only that, he didn't think he could move yet; his breath was quick and his hands were shaking and he realized that one of them was touching Zack's hair. He wasn't waking up.
Why wasn't Zack waking up...?

"...Cloud...?"

So he's awake...he's clearly not in great condition, but he's awake and somewhat coherent and he's all right.
He's all right.

Zack's lethargy worried Cloud, but he knew this was no time to sit around fretting. He had to get Zack some help.

He was missing something, he just knew it. So what was it...?

"I don't know what happened; it doesn't matter now anyways. All that matters is getting you back up to the surface so someone can have a look at you."

"Okay?"

He couldn't really help but tease. Cloud probably needed it.

Cloud clutched Zack to him, shaking so hard he could feel it in his insides, and all he could think about was how John had murdered the weapon's shop keeper, Tyr, how he hadn't cared. How Tyr had supposedly been a hero, how John might've claimed another one. Just like Hojo.
Hiding his face against Zack's shoulder, Cloud gave a frustrated but choked sound, not wanting to cry but feeling so relieved that he was worried he might twist his guts into a knot if he didn't. Holy. He wasn't going to cry. He was stronger than this, Zack was fine, why the hell would he cry?

He opened his mouth to speak and ended up stammering on his breath, the sound too much like one of those pre-sob inhales for his comfort. So instead he clamped his mouth shut and clutched a little bit harder, and promised his body that if it would stop trembling he'd take better care of it.

He drew Zack's arm over his shoulder, adjusting the broadsword at his back so it didn't jab Zack in the side and began to make for the ladder, not sure how he'd get Zack up it but knowing they'd figure something out.

...er, that is...until they reach the rope ladder. Which they have. Oh dear.

Peering back over into the hole -eyes bright with mako again- Cloud grasped the edges of the ladder and began to pull Zack to the surface with ease. "You doing all right down there?"

It was his fault that Zack had died and lost his mako...and it was something that bothered Zack so much that Cloud couldn't help but hope that the matter had been rectified. Zack had wanted his mako back so badly...

And then there was a second rush, far more intense than before. Never before had he felt such a maddening inflow of strength - it sent him reeling, stole the smile from his lips and the strength from his limbs. "Cloud- something's-"
But that was all he managed to say before he fell forward.

"Zack, Zack," he chanted as he turned him in his arms, laying him on his back so he could take a proper look. Eyes half-lidded and bright, so the mako was back- his expression was dull, there weren't any tense lines of pain or discomfort. Cloud patted his cheek lightly, called his name again; no response. He tried again, a little harder.
Nothing.
Lifting Zack's eyelids to see if his pupils were dilated, it suddenly struck Cloud what was wrong. He'd never seen it first hand...but he was familiar with the concept. The idea sunk into his stomach and made him feel sick, and Cloud felt his trembling begin anew. Zack's eyes were too bright.
Mako poisoning.
