What: Birthday parties!
When: July 4th (a smidge backdated)
Where: The riverside, south of the village
Summary: After several birthdays had passed, a birthday PARTY is arranged for those who missed theirs. At the river!

[With the help of Toph and Roku (and possibly others), the party had been set up south of the village. There were cakes, party tables, and seats out for everyone. It wasn't really a traditional Water Tribe party by any means, because it was meant for more than one person, after all. But it was by the river and swimming opportunities there. Sokka even set up a net and poles for volleyball. Nami and Roku knew to be there, but of course, Sokka has to get here there still...]

Some surprise. Sokka nearly gave me a heart attack on the way over, telling me it was Nami's birthday and no one had told me...

[Glancing back at you now. Oh. Back to looking for Longshot, then.] I mean, it's not like I knew it was my birthday - I had no idea what was going on.

[Jet folds his arms casually, continuing to look happy to see her.] I feel ya. I mean, I don't even know when my birthday is. My parents - yeah. Never remembered. But that's alright. Us Freedom Fighters, we partied so much it didn't really matter.

But that reminds me... You're supposed to give gifts at these things, right? What do I owe ya?

[He doesn't even know-

They didn't celebrate- Oh.

And then before her heart has a chance to recover from that, he hits her with the bit about the present. She meets his gaze.]

Oh! You don't have to get me anything. It's enough that you came!

[He chuckles at that.] That's very sweet. But now I feel like a loser 'cause I didn't know. You sure I can't find somethin' later?

You really don't have to get me anything. I don't have anything that I need! This is all so much already...

[And one hand goes up to touch the sparkling hair pins that Diana gave her.]

[He nods in admiration at the pins, then looks off at nothing in particular as he thinks.] Hm. How 'bout a birthday hug at least?

[...well, that's not something she was expecting.

And after a wide-eyed moment of shock and uncertainty, she shrugs a little.] All right.

[So she takes a step forward to give and accept a hug.]

[Huuuuuuuug. Yay hugs!] Happy birthday. You're fifteen now, yeah? Sixteen?

[Pulling back, she steps away until there's a comfortable amount of room between them again.. or until the table that's not too far behind her cuts off her retreat, whatever happens first. She tucks a strand of hair behind her ear, mostly to have something to do.]

Fifteen. [She makes a small face.] Though it feels weird to say it.

[He nods then looks at her intently after a moment.]

This might be outta place, but... Do you miss Aang?

[Well, hello direct hit to her heart that came out of no where. She glances up, looking right at him, startled.

Why is he asking this?]

[But... well... she doesn't have any reason to hide. Even if she'd rather not talk about something like this. And she'd certainly rather not talk about it at a party, in public.]

Yeah, I do. I miss him every day. And the echoes this place has been pulling on us.. haven't helped.

[She hears her mom, singing. Catches a glimpse of her out of the corner of her eye. Hears Aang, laughing. And sometimes there's a wind that comes out of no where, and she can almost hear - 'Look what I can do.'] Of course I miss him.

I'm just askin', 'cause I know he'd want to be here. [He says this sincerely.] It's kinda weird, y'know? Seeing all you guys, without him.

If you ever want to talk about it, come find me. I'm not much of a talker 'bout things like that, but I guess I can listen.

Sometimes I hear the whole gang. And the sounds of the tanks. This place... Man, I hope we get out soon. At least the Fire Nation didn't mess with nobody's heads.

[She glances down, and away, and hurts.] Thanks, Jet.

['I hope we get out soon.' - and something twists inside her. Yeah, she does too. But you don't have any place to go, do you, Jet? She lays her hand on his shoulder and glances up at him.] It's hard, but - it's not real. I almost don't mind hearing him laugh. It makes it so I don't have to worry about forgetting what he sounds like.

[And she lets her hand drop and tries to smile.] And it's not like there aren't some good things here.

Yeah, like not being dead. [He finds this awkwardly funny.]

Nah, but seriously, you're right. I've got Longshot - and you guys. And you've all got each other.

I really looked up to the kid, too. But now I guess you've,/i> been making me want to be a better person. Gotta be honest, I used to think ya were a bit too much, what with your feelin's and all - but, you've been really strong here. 'specially without him. And I think 'Man, if she can do it, if she can be happy, I can too'.

Man, what am I doing? I'm not some sap. It's a party. Ya want some more food? I'll get some.

...[Yeah, like not being dead.

And as for the rest - part of her wants to blush, and part of her wants to challenge him on it - but instead, she just lets it go. And hopes he's telling the truth, not for her sake, but for his.

So she just offers him a wry, genuine smile.] Sure, Jet. That would be nice. [Pause - and a searching look.] ...thanks.

[And no, she's not talking about the food. She shifts a little to the side, clearing his way to the table.] I'll just grab us something to drink - meet you over there? [And she points towards a spot by the river.]

Sure thing. [He nods and steps over to put together a couple of plates, then goes to where she pointed.]

[She's sitting down on the grass with her back to the river. Two glasses of lemonade rest on the ground beside her.]

Hey. What'd you get? [And she shifts her gaze to briefly scan past him.] Still no sign of Longshot, huh?

[He takes a seat beside her and hands her a plate.] Some of that meat stuff - you like meat, right? And no, not yet. I'd call for him, but I've gotten birds answering back. In people-talk.

[Something very close to pain flickers across her face at that - and it even mutes her laughter to more of an exhale then the giggles she'd normally give to something like birds responding to him.]

Been making friends with the birds, huh? [She sets the plate on her lap, suddenly much less hungry.] What about any of the people?

[He looks at her curiously.] Birds, people, everyone talks here, yeah?

Yeah, but I'd imagine some have more to say than the others. [She picks at her plate. This is weird.]

The birds can actually be meaner than people. [Which he says very seriously.]

[Attempting to keep back a smile.] Oh, really. What did they do?

[Very serious face :|] They commented on my eyebrows. Said they look delicious.
