Summary: The ocean part of the promised swim lessons!
Rating: G as far as I know. Maybe PG.

The water is relatively calm today, which makes it easier for lessons. Lucky~! It feels like any beach trip might.

Ami, clothed in shorts and a shirt over her bathing suit and wearing a whistle around her neck, wades just a short distance into the water so that it laps at her bared feet. She digs her toes deeper into the muck, unseen.

She has a few extra whistles for other instructors or helpers, and she looks over the group assembled. This is the first time she's really put herself forward like this, though she's confident in her skills. Hopefully it will go well.

Saki was definitely the more dangerous one, though.

"Good." He says in agreement. "What can I do to help? I haven't helped with swim lessons before."

"The most important is safety," Ami says immediately; hardly a surprise, coming from her. She tactfully avoids saying it's especially true when the species swim differently.

Leo nods. "Understood. I can keep an eye out." He says firmly. "I'm sure it'll go fine." He adds. With all the people here, how could it go wrong?

"Thanks." Ami smiles somewhat wistfully. "I haven't really done this sort of thing before, so I'm nervous. I want it to go well."

"That makes two of us than. I'm sure you'll done fine." Nobody would have shown up, if they doubted that, right?

"Thank you for your confidence," Ami says a trifle formally, but sincerely enough for that.

"My father taught me to swim when I was young," she adds somewhat irrelevantly. "I wasn't thinking until I spoke with Link, about people who might not have had a chance to learn."

Leo just nods at that. Formality isn't a bad thing.

"I've gone swimming plenty of times." Mostly in the sewers, or in the rivers around the city. "First time to the ocean. But I'm aware of the differences."

"That was what started this idea," Ami admits. "Someone wanted to learn ocean swimming, how it's different and how to keep up their strength for it with the currents and waves."

Leo nods in understanding.

"And the dangers." They didn't have to worry about sharks or anything, but there's always the chance of a rip current or something.

"Have you been to the ocean?" She winces inwardly and hopes the question won't be taken as rude; but from what she knows of their lives, she isn't sure whether they'd have had the opportunity.

"Not before today, no." It's tough to admit, but despite living near the ocean, they've never managed it. "Mainly river and lake swimming." NYC's rivers are large and wide, but they're still just rivers.

"Then, welcome to the ocean for the first time." The air is clean, with the crisp smell of water; the waves crashing against the shore make a soothing white noise.

"Thank you, I look forward to swimming, and helping out with lessons."

"Shall we go, then? We can swim a little while we wait." Ami casts a look behind her at the beckoning sea, the afternoon sunlight turning it to diamonds.

"Sounds good." Leo says with a nod, looking at the water. It's definitely beckoning and enticing. He'd definitely have to try and get down her more often. He'll head for the water.

Ami doesn't wait long after that. She slips out further into the waves, until it's deep enough that she finds herself needing to tread water.

"It's been awhile since I've done this, too!"

Leo takes to the water like...well, a turtle. Even if he's not a sea turtle. Once deep enough, he'll dive under the water for a moment, before coming to surface near where Ami is treading.

"Really? I would have thought you did this often."

She's not surprised to see him glide smoothly beneath the waves, movements quick and streamlined and efficient. It makes her smile; she can't help but appreciate it.

"Back home, I swam at the pool in the local gym," she says. "But this ocean has only been here a few months. And with one thing and another... I've only been out here a few times since then."

The water feels good. A little warm from the sun, yet cool at the same time. He's definitely going to have to come down here more.

"I've read something about this once being a desert." He nods at the explanation. Pool in a gym, that's definitely not a luxury that Leo knows. "We went swimming mostly in the clean sewer water when we could find it." Which can often be few and far between in a sewer system. "We've also gone swimming in the rivers and lakes up near our friends farmhouse back home."

Ami comes from a privileged background by any standards, often misunderstood as a snobbish princess type back home. Her luxuries and advantages growing up were miles away from the sewers - one of the distances between her and Mike, no matter how much they may genuinely like each other.

Right now, it doesn't matter; this is just a day for swimming and enjoying themselves, all of them. Leo, too.

"You must have loved every chance that you had," she says, thinking about herself. "Every time you could just go swimming and relax."

We didn't swim often, but it was enjoyable when we did. [And like anything fun, it never lasted long enough.]
