What: Jack puts together a rescue party to finally get Hector back.

Rating: Hopefully no more than PG?
A long time ago, a man wanted a woman to lose her fear of the sea. To that end, he found for her a lovely huggy pet--an octopus that he had lovingly christened "Fabio." This pet, he hoped, would show her that the sea holds things that are good and wholesome and wonderful. With this insight, she would come to love the water as much as he did. At least, he wagered, she might be less frightened by it.
Fabio did not like his new human name at all, but as a stoical philosopher he accepted his fate and realized that he would rather live in a tank in Raine Sage's room than die on the beach. His people, you see, forced him into exile because of his highly unpopular views on mollusks. "You are corrupting our youth," they screamed at him in that way that octopi do when they are very upset. There was also much arm-waving and rather sophisticated tool-use. "You are corrupting our youth and for that you must die!"
The man felt a great deal of compassion when he saw the dying philosopher. An idealist himself, he understood the pains of exile when others consider you far too different to deserve survival. He did not know that unfriendly eyes were marking him as he carried Fabio away from certain death. He did not realize that he had become, in that tentacled realm, an enemy. And when the man went off to war months and months later, and afterward was lying severely injured in the clinic, he did not know that the octopi were sneaking into his home by the sea.
Boneless bodies slithered through the night, squeezing through the cracks of that home. No one was around to hear the tiny, stub-tailed kitten's meowing as the many-armed invaders dragged him out into their domain--a cave up the coast, strewn with Shiny Things of Interest to Octopi. There they held him prisoner in a dim sort of diplomatic standoff: Hector for Fabio. A wee kitten for a traitor.
The man had known that something was brewing among the cephalopods. [<--Warning: this thread is not suitable for minors.] But it wasn't until he returned, sick and wounded, from the clinic, that he realized that his kind actions had reached a sick fruition. The chickens, as they say, had come home to roost. And that is what one gets for being an honest man. Still grievously wounded from battle, the man found he could not immediately retrieve his pet. Events and horrible circumstances in Luceti further prevented the rescue mission from happening, though the man did his part and papered the village with posters describing the lost cat, just in case. His grief over the loss of the kitten only expanded after the friend who gifted him with the pet was suddenly sent home by the Malnosso. It never crossed his mind to turn Fabio over to the authorities, but he needed more desperately than ever to find the poor kitten.
Now the man had assembled a crack team of octopus-finders: Katie McCoy, his cabin girl; Stephen Maturin, who will quite possibly be stumped at both the sophistication of the octopi society as well as their capabilities of nurturing long-standing grudges; and Fox Mulder, who will do that thing he does best when tentacled things kidnap cats. Once this crew was loaded aboard the Joanna Joyce, Jack Sparrow set sail with his magical compass for a guide, homing in on the northern coast and the dangerous secrets hidden there.
[OOC: So four-way threads are probably a BAD IDEA but I think for the sake of keeping it fresh and real and jazzy we should start the action with approaching the cave at high tide. Picture the cave on the Isla de Muerta in POTC, but not nearly as large and without all that treasure. That is pretty much where they are going to be finding this cat. Octopi are not good fighters. They will probably throw things like rocks and shells at the intruders and squirt ink and water at them. Possibly they will try to trip them with their tentacles. Worst case scenario you get one of those things on your neck and it tries strangling you. They will be making lots of rude gestures. That's about all they can do. I'll start off a thread and we can see what happens! Tag at your leisure--I know this is a busy weekend for me so tags will mostly come at night. orz.]

/godmodes you all!
The element of surprise, he reasoned, might still be on their side, even though the cephalopods probably had spies everywhere. Therefore his orders and questions were spoken in a harsh whisper that he hoped would not carry over the water.
"Munster--keep her steady! Maturin--stop peering over the rail, you'll alert them! Katie, darling---are you ready?"
no subject
At least the weather had been decent, so he could keep this thing steady without much trouble. Mulder was getting the hang of it, the farther out they went. As they neared the cave he kept an eye out for signs of things stirring.
no subject
Once the anchor was dropped and the Joanna was bobbing quietly on the waves, Jack turned back to his crew.
"There's a cave just there. We're going to need to be stealthy; we can row closer in the dinghy, and then by Davy Jones's writhing face we'll set poor Hector free. If you're not otherwise armed, there's an extra cutlass or two in the cabin."
no subject
...never mind she actually came with her own sword.
no subject
no subject
"I'll take one, if you can spare it, Sparrow."
no subject
no subject
Drawing one of them now, he seemed satisfied he'd be set to go. "I'm up for making some calamari out of them..." Or was that technically squid? No matter, Mulder was already eagerly scanning the area for signs of foes.
If you guys want to do comment-spam style, that is cool with me.
Jack thought he'd seen SOMETHING, but...no, perhaps just a trick of light and wave.
"Right. You keep a sharp eye--I'll prepare to lower the boat."
The dinghy he had started to build with Mildmay months before was now readied on the side of the Joanna. It would carry four, with the pirate at the oars.
no subject
Once she was armed, however, she scrambled up into the dinghy as if worried all the adults were going to leave without her, nimble as... well, a cat.
no subject
He joined the others a moment later, looking at the dinghy. Then his eyes went to Sparrow, and he nodded once.
no subject
"Cabin girls first."
no subject
Well, he was operating on a theory that Octopi were decent strategists. Probably worse than dolphins, but better than hermit crabs in that department. God, if Scully could have heard him go on about this.
no subject
Once they got closer. She sounded impatient. "Can we go now?"
no subject
From somewhere inside the dripping wet formation, eyes were watching them. Tentacles were signaling. A resistance force was amassing.
"Might want to go first, Muldy," Jack whispered. The lawman probably had the most experience with this type of thing, for all he knew.
no subject
His pale eyes darted about, taking in every sight he could. The solemnity of the others had affected him. At the very least, he was willing to accept that Sparrow took this to be a serious hunt, and he would conduct himself as if it were just that.
no subject
They couldn't afford to underestimate their enemy here. Octopi were no harder to profile than people, or he'd find out soon enough if that was true.
Tentacles waved threateningly from within the cave as Mulder stepped forward. He'd barely moved along ahead when suddenly a burst of thick, black ink came squirting forth. Mulder threw an arm protectively over his eyes, just in time. Then held the gun out. He didn't bother with the badge- what meaning would it have to them? But some habits were still there...
"I'm a Federal Agent! The law! And I don't give a damn about jurisdiction. You still have a choice. You can give up the kitten... or we're taking him by force!" ...Yeah. He knew what their answer would be.
/dies at Mulder's tag
Sparrow drew out his pistol. Tentacles would be separated from globulous bodies this day, if he had anything to say about it. Buffy always talked about how she preferred to bring the battle to the enemy. Jack, personally, had always preferred to negotiate, but as the Battle of the Maelstrom had demonstrated, he wasn't above doing violence to the enemy if he had the upper hand and they had something precious to him.
"Don't want Hector hurt," he mumbled to his crew. "Katie--can you locate him in there? Recover him? Me an' the boys'll give you the cover you need."
The floor of the cave was slimy and treacherous, and Jack realized that they had to keep an eye on the tides; it was no good getting trapped inside if the entrance ended up under water.
no subject
"As long as there's cover," she said gravely-- though really, she said it largely because in situations like this, it's only proper. Personally the idea of being attacked by a horde of octopi just sounded downright entertaining... but with a kitten lost in the cave somewhere, there were priorities.
Thus, Katie waited for an opportune moment (or a count of five, whichever came sooner) and leapt to action, sprinting across the slimy cavern sure-footed and not sliding once.
no subject
Meanwhile, there were enemies to defeat.
"Maturin! Monday! No quarter, lads!"
And Jack charged across the slippery rocks, trying to keep his footing and ducking the sharpened clam shells that were being flung at him from all directions.
no subject
The octopi were putting a strong offensive, throwing things from all directions and occasionally squirting ink in hopes of blinding them. Mulder found it a challenge to dodge these attacks, and nearly tripped a couple of times.
He opened fire when he got a good shot on one, taking down the octopus with a couple of shots. So they were as vulnerable physically as one might expect. Good to know. Except they still had strength in numbers.
no subject
"NO!" he shouted, scrabbling for purchase against the wet rocks. "Bugger! LEGGO!"
no subject
She would rather not run pell mell back through the cavern and traumatise little Hector any further, and so after soothing him with soft words and mewls, Katie tucked him into the top of her pinafore and stroked behind the ears long enough for the kitten's eyes to close.
And then within the blink of an eye herself, Katie teleported herself out of the cave, appearing quietly behind Jack's rescue party with a polite cough. Flicker flash.
