New Year's brings images of crowds, and songs, and fireworks; staying up til midnight and watching balls or bells being rung. But Luceti is a different time and place. Whether you're partying with friends or watching the sunrise, what are you doing today?

Shiemi- what- are you guys okay?

I heard you the first time. [She grumbles as she pushes herself up to at least a sitting position.

The bird, Ques, hops over and reaches out his neck towards her, but she pushes him aside by the head, not entirely gently, as she looks at Rin.] ...I'm fine.

[shamelessness]

Are you sure?

[rashness]

[Man is that a chicken or what? In watching it, his face probably looks more sour]

Yes, I'm sure. [Getting up and brushing off snow.] But you really should watch where you're going.

[The bird notices your stare, Rin, and accepts this staring contest challenge!! By which is meant that he turns his head to stare back.]

I guess I wasn't looking... but I'm glad Fenimore is okay! A-and Fenimore, this is Rin. He's a friend from home.

[Introductions! She did that right, right?]

Ossu, yeah, that's me!

[Okay turning to face... Fenimore. Now]

[Fenimore briefly wonders if this is a friend by the sake of asking when they met or by the sake of long aquaintance. Then again, the two definitions may have converged by this point if they've known each other long enough.]

Hello. It's nice to meet you.

[Well, at this point, it's a formality to say that it's nice to meet him. But looking over towards Rin makes her notice Ques from her peripheral vision. She probably should introduce him in return. insert jokes here about Rin being Shiemi's pet]

And I guess I should introduce this thing. [She jerks a thumb in the direction of the bird.] This is Ques. Don't worry, he's harmless to anything other than peaches.

[The mention of peaches gets Ques to stop feeling self-satisfied over "winning" the staring contest and turn quickly towards Fenimore in case this is actually foreshadowing any being given to him. (It's not.)]

Hello, Ques! It's nice to meet you! [She reaches out to pet the bird.]

...Peaches?

[He can't help but be curious here, actually, and the bird's reaction only makes him more so]

[Ques is totally cool with this petting thing! Thank you, nice lady! Technically, as a Luceti pet, he should be able to express this in words, but he prefers to coo instead.

Fenimore, meanwhile, shakes her head.] One time when I was [mallynapped] ...away, Grune -- one of my housemates -- she kept feeding him peaches. Now he won't stop eating them until he gets fat, and Grune keeps sneaking them to him. [She sighs.] He won't even exercise on his own, the lazy thing.

He's cute though. I like him.

What a lazy thing... [Seriously, even Kuro's better than that. Ni probably is too.]

I'm not sure if I'd call him cute.... [She's too used to peepits being dangerous monsters for that.] But I guess he could be worse.

How long have you had him?

[And he just mock laughs at the bird. Hah, your owner doesn't think you're cute!]

Uh...I guess it's been a little over a year. Last [hesitation] Chrismas [eh, close enough] ...I mean, the one before the one that just passed...there was a statue that gave out gifts to people. Some people got jewelry. I got a monster.

[At least she didn't get a rock.

Ques may not understand exactly what is going on, but he recognizes mocking through tone. Rin, if you are pointing like in that icon, he's going to reach out his head and bite it. But, since he's nice enough to not bite hard and thus can't snap quickly, it won't be that hard to avoid even without counting Rin's shounen hero skill set. And if it does land, it won't be enough to even break the skin -- he's just making a point, that's all.]

[in the foreground, Ques actually does connect with Rin's finger. It's not hard but it latches a bit so Rin shakes his hand to knock the monster-bird-whatever off, causing it to presumably fly back a foot or two]

[And this is where Fenimore notices the commotion going on in the foreground as Ques flies back a fair distance -- he is, after all, a bird and thus quite light for his size. This...this seems to be against what she was about to say about Ques not attacking anyone.]

Are you okay?! [To Rin, rather than Ques, who seems to be just disoriented.]

[Hold on. From the looks of how Rin is acting, either he's got really tough skin or this is more on the level of, say, cat scratches. That's relieving.]
