Summary: It's New Year's, and the people of Luceti have a lot to reflect upon, and to look forward to. And on a more meta level, new journal names.

New Year's brings images of crowds, and songs, and fireworks; staying up til midnight and watching balls or bells being rung. But Luceti is a different time and place. Whether you're partying with friends or watching the sunrise, what are you doing today?

Oh, okay. Well, I'm gonna go get something for myself then, okay? I'll be back in a bit.

[She scampers off.]

[ Spada doesn't mind that and he doesn't mind waiting — he doesn't have anything pressing to talk about, just chitchat. ]

[She returns not long after with a can of soda and a plate full of meatbuns. One of them's in her mouth already, actually, as she sits down across from Spada -- though thankfully she removes it and finishes chewing before talking.]

So where's Luca? Is he coming out tonight?

[ ... Food is always a lot more appetizing while it's in front of him, for the record, and he eyes that plate but he doesn't ask for anything yet. ]

Hell if I know. I'm half expectin' him to sleep through the whole event.

He doesn't like to stay up late, huh...?

I dunno about that. You get him into a good book and he'll be up for hours, though he passes out eventually. Wakes up earlier than I'd like to for sure, though.

I don't usually stay up too late either. But it's New Year's Eve, so I definitely want to be awake for that. There's a lot of things going on tonight, after all! [Food! Friends! Fireworks! This is a happy Pao-Lin.]

See, you try to get Luca in that mindset and it's like pullin' teeth. Sometimes I start thinkin' it's hopeless tryin' to show him what goin' out and bein' a little social's like.

[ But he's laughing and he couldn't consider Luca hopeless, just severely bad off. ]

Ah, yeah, he's pretty quiet and shy, isn't he? But he's so friendly...I'm sure lots of people would want to be friends with him if he went out and just talked to them.

I think he's gettin' better, at least. You shoulda seen him when I first met him — couldn't get out a single sentence without stutterin'!

Well, everyone has their weaknesses and stuff like that. I'm sure you helped Luca with deal with his, right? [Because that's what friends are for!]

[ Leaning forward in his seat a bit, a little sheepish. ]

I do what I can, you know? He's got it in him, he just needs a little encouragement. [ A pause. ] That's probably why he likes you so much. Bring out the best in him and all.

[Pao-Lin tilts her head curiously, considering Spada's words.]

You think so?

[ Nodding with some amount of enthusiasm, sure. ]

Yeah, positive. Least for all the time he spends talkin' about you I'd think so.

[ Including to his other love interest which always goes over very well for him. ]

[This makes Pao-Lin rather happy! Though...perhaps not quite for the reason that Spada might expect.]

That's good, then. It's nice to know that even when I'm not on HeroTV, I can still help people out.

Yeah, it's the TV show I work for. Do you have TV in your world? [She can't remember the subject ever coming up with Luca, which is kinda odd but whatever.]

Nah, Naraka's just on the verge of its steam-powered era or whatever. Can't say I'm too familiar with TV shows, either.

Well, basically, me and other people with powers go around and catch criminals or we save civilians from things like burning buildings or something. People get to watch us do that on a television screen, so they can see what's going on even though they're not there on the scene with us.

[Yeah, Pao-Lin thinks it's pretty damn awesome too.]

Yup! It's my job back home. I've been doing it for about five years so far.

They start you guys off young, huh? The electricity thing part of the job or a requirement?

You do need to have a NEXT power in order to be a Hero, but as for the age thing, I'm the youngest Hero on the team so far. Most Heroes are adults.
